Such an amazing place, with such a variety of food, culture, history, beauty and high cost of living.

Another little blurb of pics, from this evening (Sunday, 10.16.2022).

Tag along with my partner and me to dinner in our immediate town!

Riesling.

Grilled calamari.

Duck ragú tagilatelle.

Limoncello for dessert.

We got a little tipsy and stayed at the restaurant just conversing while people started leaving, and the staff started tidying up the tables.

It's the Halloween season after all, and of course, the original "Halloween" movie was filmed in South Pasadena.

Random photos, taken today, Monday, 10.31.2022.

My partner and I took Monday off and...

We went day drinking at a couple of LA landmarks.

The Tam O'Shanter, a restaurant that's been in business for a hundred years.

Really old school inside. We had ciders and salads, but I didn't take pictures of them because it came out dark.

Sticking to our old-school LA theme, I had the idea to go to Boardner's in Hollywood...

Didn't think to look it up, but when we got there, Boardner's was closed... it doesn't open until 5pm.

My partner had the idea to go to the Formosa Cafe, so that's what we did.

Ricardo Montalban!

My partner started off with a Yee Mee Loo.

I had a Singapore Sling.

And here they are.

Danny Kaye, I think.

My second one. It's called Mezcal It a Day. My partner had one too.

OK. Ready for my next round.

Our third round. I had a Matador, and my partner had a Green Tea Martini.

A couple sat down in the next booth as we were getting ready to leave.

Leaving the Formosa Cafe...

And then a quick drive down the street to get a snack to soak up a little of the alcohol, at another old school LA landmark...

...the Tail o' the Pup.

I should've taken a picture of my hot dog the other way around...

...so that you could've seen its face. They make it so that the end of the hot dog sticks out like a tail.

Speaking of a pup...

Home again, home again, jiggety-jig.

^ those pics make me feel really good. I respect the company behind the renovations of both the old timey place that's known for hot dogs & the old timey place that show biz ppl hung out decades ago & is known for a quasi chinese theme.

Quote:
Our Story
Formed nearly two decades ago, the 1933 Group helms a lauded portfolio of bars in Los Angeles, including the historical restorations of Highland Park Bowl and the barrel-shaped bar Idle Hour in North Hollywood, Harlowe in West Hollywood, Sassafras in Hollywood, La Cuevita in Highland Park, Bigfoot Lodge in Los Feliz, Thirsty Crow in Silver Lake, Culver City’s Bigfoot West and Oldfield’s Liquor Room, and the soon-to-be restored iconic Formosa Café and Tail o' the Pup. Combining design aesthetics that embrace various time periods in early America with a passion for cocktails and the revival of the art of bartending, owners Bobby Green, Dimitri Komarov, and Dmitry Liberman create imaginative libations and scenes throughout LA’s drinking landscape. Each concept reflects bold, modern interpretations, reflective of the company’s dynamic partners and memorable eras.

btw, your last pic shows part of a large apt bldg right next to the fwy. The complex, when it was still being built, went up in a huge fire several decembers ago. It gets a lot of jeers for its kitschy design, but it filled up rather quickly & appears to have a high occupancy rate today. It occupies land that was formerly parking lots....which I recall driving by yrs ago & never being ok with.

Yeah, they're actually kinda fun. We hadn't been to the Formosa Cafe in many years, before it was closed and renovated/restored. It's been so long that I was trying to remember what it looked like back then; maybe a little dingy, but it wasn't dirty or anything---you know, it had that "patina" of being a very old place. I remember it being darker, too, even in the daytime.

I guess the good thing about that apartment building is that it added more housing, but honestly I don't like the look of it. And it's so long and huge. And with its "cousin" that they recently built across the freeway from it, I think it ruins the look of driving south on the 110 into downtown. It's like a long wall of beige cheap stucco apartments on both sides: https://www.google.com/maps/@34.0616...4!8i8192?hl=en

Hideous.

I get what you mean. But after seeing what certain other cities are like....such as the some of the classic ones in Europe...it becomes a case of fake Tuscan isn't necessarily way worse than this...just a bit south of the new apt bldgs. This is the type of view I've long associated with the fwys around dtla....weedy parking lots & phone poles .

google.com

hopefully, banana trees or other landscaping, such as what's on the side of the apt bldgs to the east will grow up & cover some of the stucco of the bldgs to the west. As for the graffiti? That's become an issue in cities up & down the West coast, such as in seattle, & elsewhere. Lots of tagging in cities like NYC too.

The end of the Metro K Line... for now. In a few years, it'll connect with the C Line and also hook up with the LAX people-mover.

Thanks for sharing your photos of the new Crenshaw line, I think Lemert Park will see a big change to the area. I always enjoyed that area and used to frequent this jazz house named 5th Street Dicks Coffee House back in the 90’s. http://www.leimertparkmovie.com/Biog...hardFulton.htm

It was quite a popular place for jazz musicians from around the country to stop in and perform. It was such a down to earth place to go to and it was attended by all races of people. They didn’t even serve alcohol, but only coffee drinks and some food. If I remember correctly there was no cover charge either but you paid what you can. The owner just one day suddenly died and the place close down, I remember it was on the news. I do missed the little club, and it also stayed opened well pass 2am. That was probably because no alcohol was served.

I regret not ever having gone to 5th Street Dicks Coffee House. Sounds like it was a really cool place. I'm really sad that I never went to Eso Won, either. Though we've always been interested in going there, we somehow never made it there. My understanding was that it would be open until the end of the year, and their website made it seem like they were still open. And then we finally take the train to Leimert Park and we saw that Eso Won is now closed. Apparently they're now doing online orders only.

I agree, the area will change, hopefully the people and businesses who've long been there won't be priced out. It's always been a vibrant place.

Random photos, Sunday, 11.13.2022. We decided to hang out in Old Town Pasadena for the afternoon/into the evening, so we took the bus there.

We did a late lunch of momos...

Chai.

Afterwards we walked here. Cocktail hour was nearing.
