HKIA Records Continuous Growth in Cargo Traffic in August
Press Release Excerpt

(HONG KONG, 10 September 2021, 1700hrs) – Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) today released the traffic figures for Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) for August 2021. During the month, cargo throughput recorded a year-on-year increase of 15.5% to 429,000 tonnes. All three cargo categories – namely imports, exports and transshipments – recorded double-digit growth at HKIA in August. Cargo to and from North America and Southeast Asia experienced the most significant increases during the month.

Meanwhile, the airport handled 222,000 passengers and 12,845 flight movements, surging by 164.9% and 28.4%, respectively, from the low base in the same month last year. HKIA handled more than 7,000 passengers daily during the month, due to a significant increase in outbound transfer passengers from Mainland China. The month’s passenger traffic amounted to around 4% of pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

Over the first eight months of the year, cargo throughput saw 12.4% growth to 3.2 million tonnes. Passenger throughput and flight movements reported declines of 91.6% and 23.3%, to 713,000 passengers and 87,510, respectively.

Locked in hotels: Hong Kong's COVID-19 rules take mental toll on Cathay pilots
Reuters Excerpt
Nov 26, 2021

One of Asia's largest airlines, Cathay Pacific, is facing a revolt from pilots who say Hong Kong's tough quarantine rules under its zero-COVID policies are endangering their mental health, leading to rising stress and resignations.

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd (0293.HK) last week fired three pilots who breached company rules by leaving their hotel rooms during a layover in Frankfurt and later tested positive for Covid-19.

The government responded by forcing more than 270 people, including school children linked to their families, into tiny quarters at a state quarantine camp.

Some pilots declared themselves unfit to fly for their first rostered duties upon release.

The extreme example of pandemic-related precautions under China's zero-Covid policy highlights the difficult working conditions facing Cathay pilots, all fully vaccinated, even as other Asian countries slowly reopen.

Cathay rivals including Australia's Qantas Airways Ltd (QAN.AX) have begun unwinding strict layover policies but the Hong Kong government is tightening rules further in line with the mainland, hoping to convince Beijing to allow cross-border travel.

Cathay Says Liquidity Healthy, Too Early to Assess Omicron Jolt
Bloomberg Excerpt
Dec 1, 2021

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. said it’s maintaining a healthy level of liquidity after bringing down cash burn, helped in large part by strong cargo operations while passenger capacity remains restricted by the pandemic.

Ready cash reserves stood at HK$31.7 billion ($4.1 billion) as of Oct. 31, more than twice the level in June last year when Cathay was burning through as much as HK$3 billion a month, the airline said in an update to analysts Wednesday. The business is now at around breakeven, it said.

Chief Financial Officer Rebecca Sharpe said Cathay may consider additional financing opportunities but it wasn’t yet possible to say if a HK$7.8 billion bridging loan from the Hong Kong government would be drawn down or extended again.

Hong Kong pilots to be barred from leaving home for 3 days in tougher surveillance system, as Cathay Pacific decries ‘endless’ rules
South China Morning Post Excerpt
Dec 23, 2021

Hong Kong will further clamp down on Cathay Pacific’s quarantine-exempt pilots, forbidding them from leaving their homes to buy food and perform other essential tasks in their first three days of Covid-19 surveillance, the Post has learned.

The airline is also preparing for a mid-February launch of “China bubble” flights, with the expectation that dedicated crew operating the services will be subject to less stringent testing and surveillance requirements.

Pilots undergoing the mandatory seven days of enhanced medical surveillance (EMS) on arrival in Hong Kong are currently allowed to leave their accommodation for solo exercise, purchasing food and running other errands.

Hong Kong is increasingly shut off as inbound flights dwindle
The Standard Excerpt
Dec 31, 2021

Hong Kong is becoming increasingly shut off from the outside world because of its strict Covid-19 policies as the city imposes a raft of flight bans and airlines slash inbound services.

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. has almost halved the number of flights into Hong Kong from outside China next month, according to aviation data company Cirium, in the wake of tougher quarantine restrictions on flight crew. The city’s marquee carrier has scheduled just 150 inbound services in January, the lowest monthly total since May. Before the pandemic, the figure was close to 4,000.

Hong Kong has been conforming to China’s Covid-zero strategy as the city seeks to reestablish quarantine-free travel with the mainland. Authorities have imposed some of the world’s most stringent travel rules, with overseas visitors required to quarantine for up to three weeks. Concerns are now mounting Hong Kong will be left behind as other major cities attempt to live with Covid as endemic.

Hong Kong bans transit passengers from 153 countries
The Standard Excerpt
Jan 14, 2022

Passengers from more than 150 nations will be banned from transiting through Hong Kong, the Airport Authority said Friday, in the latest tightening of the city's strict anti-virus travel measures.

The move deepens the city's global isolation as the city pursues a staunch zero-Covid policy, and creates new headaches for airlines -- some of which have begun avoiding the Chinese territory because of its strict quarantine rules.

Hong Kong ranks territories into categories based on how widespread their Covid-19 infections are, with 153 countries currently classified as Group A -- from which arrivals must spend 21 days in quarantine.

New Cathay Rival Considering Possible $1.8 Billion Plane Order
Bloomberg Excerpt
Jan 17, 2022

A new Hong Kong-based airline with ties to Beijing is considering ordering up to 30 narrow-body jets from either Boeing Co. or Airbus SE as it tries to establish itself in a market dominated by Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd.

Greater Bay Airlines, which is awaiting final approval to operate commercial passenger flights out of Hong Kong, is assessing whether to opt for Boeing’s 737 Max 10 model jets or Airbus’s A321neos, a person with direct knowledge of the plan said. Such an order could amount to as much as $1.77 billion, according to calculations by Bloomberg News and Avitas Inc. using current aircraft prices.

The carrier, founded by property magnate Bill Wong, is in talks with both Boeing and Airbus, according the person, who asked not to be identified as the matter is private. The timing and eventual size of the order depends on the Covid-19 situation in Hong Kong, the person said.

Bonuses for pilots to get more planes in air
The Standard Excerpt
Jan 20, 2022

Cathay Pacific Airways is offering bonuses of nearly HK$100,000 to pilots who are willing to fly at least four closed-loop flights that fall under the strict quarantine regime in a bid to get more planes in the air.

Captains will get HK$20,000 in their first close-looped flight. The bonus will increase to HK$22,000 on their second closed-loop flight and HK$25,000 for their third, rising to HK$29,000 for their fourth, according to a staff memo and confirmed by the airline's press office.

That means captains will get an accumulated bonus of HK$96,000 for four closed-loop flights.

Hong Kong bypassed? European airlines warn they can’t add flights while Covid-19 restrictions remain for travellers, aircrew
South China Morning Post Excerpt
May 21, 2022

Several major European airlines have warned that they will not be able to add more flights to Hong Kong if the city’s Covid-19 restrictions remain while the rest of the world opens up rapidly from the pandemic.

They said they were more likely to fly to places with fewer or no restrictions, including allowing aircrew to move about freely during layovers.

Industry leaders also warned that the city could take years to regain its status as an aviation hub, while rival Singapore stood to gain after relaxing its restrictions for travellers.

HK mulls airport ‘co-location’ joint checkpoint
The Standard Excerpt
June 1, 2022

The city’s transport chief said on Wednesday that setting up a joint checkpoint at the Hong Kong International Airport would be a feasible option for Hong Kong.

The co-location joint checkpoint arrangement has been previously proposed by local lawmakers to enable the opening of more air routes between Hong Kong and mainland cities and help boost Hong Kong’s economy.

After setting up a co-location arrangement, mainland checkpoints will be set up at the Hong Kong airport, enabling the Hong Kong airport to connect to the whole aviation network on the mainland.

Cathay Pacific expecting better showing in first half of 2022 despite staying in the red, after strong cargo performance and cost-cutting moves
South China Morning Post Excerpt
June 14, 2022

Cathay Pacific Airways is expecting a better performance in the first half of this year compared with the same period in 2021 despite still posting losses, on the back of stronger cargo businesses and cost-cutting measures.

The Hong Kong flag carrier on Tuesday also said it was on track to double the number of destinations it flew to, from the 29 at the start of the year.

“Given a strong underlying cargo performance coupled with our cost-management measures implemented over the past two years, our consolidated losses in the first half of 2022, while substantial, are expected to be lower than the consolidated losses reported in the first half of 2021,” said chief customer and commercial officer Ronald Lam Siu-por said.

Hong Kong’s Greater Bay Airlines to launch first scheduled commercial flight to Bangkok in July, fleet expansion plans on hold amid Covid border measures
South China Morning Post Excerpt
June 15, 2022

Hong Kong-based carrier Greater Bay Airlines is set to launch its first scheduled commercial flight to Bangkok next month, with the company delaying fleet expansion amid continued border control measures between the city and mainland China.

“We need to start operations next month. We can’t wait too long. We have to get aircraft up in the sky. It may not be making profits, but we need to show people we are committed,” chief executive Algernon Yau Ying-wah said in an interview with the Post at his office on Lantau Island on Tuesday.

The airline is planning to roll out two chartered flights to Bangkok on July 9 and 16, with its first scheduled service to the Thai capital on July 23. The chartered flights will operate through travel agents, who will book tickets and sell them to leisure travellers at a package price of about HK$20,000 (US$2,548) per person covering the air ticket, hotel booking and seven days of quarantine upon return.

Cathay brings back fleet parked in the Australian desert
The Standard Excerpt
July 20, 2022

Cathay Pacific Airways, battered by the pandemic that have led to a 98 percent fall in passenger numbers, is bringing back planes that parked idle in the Australian desert to rebuild Hong Kong's hub status as restrictions ease.

Cathay said the idle aircraft in the Alice Springs desert are protected and fly-ready. “Now, we are bringing the fleet home to continue their next journey.” Hong Kong's flag carrier tweeted on Tuesday.

“How do we manage this unprecedented operation involving over 70% of our planes? With lots of planning, coordination, and even more heart,” it added.

Greater Bay Airlines sets Bangkok for maiden flight
RTHK Excerpt
July 22, 2022

Startup carrier Greater Bay Airlines has confirmed that its maiden passenger flight will take off on Saturday, to Bangkok.

According to the Airport Authority, flight HB660 will depart at 10:30am.

The airline – founded by mainland tycoon Bill Wong – declined to comment on the booking situation for the flight, citing commercial reasons.

The carrier said it will initially fly to Thailand's Suvarnabhumi airport twice a week, and it is planning to add other destinations.

"We are in the process of applying for operating permits from related aviation authorities, and we shall share more information once we received the required confirmation," said an airline spokeswoman.
