^The vast majority of visitors to Berlin are Germans. I believe it isn't in the European Top 10 in terms of international tourists.

And what do you want to proof in terms of airport activity ? Nothing obviously.

Berlin is the third most visited city in Europe. Its a tourism power house so to speak. The fact that more Germans (60%) are among the visitors proofs two things: 1. Germans make up the largest population in Europe and 2. the Germans are in general among the most travel active societies in the world.

In terms passenger traffic this is relevant because many southern and western Germans come via air traffic.

The point is that the sheer number of international tourists to Berlin isn't all that big (and more skewed towards Europeans than many other destinations), and German tourists are far less likely to arrive by air than foreign tourists. The original question was why Berlin doesn't have more intercontinental connections scheduled. The fact that the market for them simply isn't that big is certainly part of the answer.

Berlin has the third largest hotel market in Europe, which is the most visited continent on the globe. Berlin is one of the largest most booked congress and convention centers on the globe. Make your homework before repeating mistakes twice.

And why has Berlin not yet become a large intercontinental hub. Pretty easy to answer this: Because of Cold War history and crappy uncapable airport infrastructure which is installed since today.

The new BER is doubling the potential PAX capacities. Only then airlines are able to expand and to invest.

What mistakes am I repeating, exactly? I'm simply sticking to the facts. Berlin ranked 16th in terms of international tourist arrivals in Europe in 2006 (15th if you exclude Istanbul). I'm not saying that Berlin doesn't have a bright future as a tourist destination or that it won't have a decent sized airport, I'm saying that tourism doesn't make Berlin a larger air travel market than Prague or Vienna.

Europe being the most visited continent (most tourism intense) while is Berlin the third largest single destination in terms of overnight stays. It is pretty clear that comments about minor significance of tourism for the city´s air traffic are baseless.

I know this one, its incorrect and factual wrong. This stat hasn´t been repeated in the following years because of its misleading methodology and counting measures.

Actually, the list has been updated several times. Here's the 2009 ranking:

The figures for Berlin are pretty consistent with the city's official statistics.

Berlin is a top international convention city and has been for the past 5 years. BER should make it even more popular.

http://www.iccaworld.com/newsarchive...ls.cfm?id=2686

Berlin has been named as one of the top five convention cities worldwide by ICCA for the past five years – not for one but many reasons. The German capital convinces with a large number of convention centres and locations – including the award winning International Congress Centre ICC – as well as Europe’s most modern hotel landscape. The opening of the new capital airport in June 2012 will result in an increase in long haul flights ensuring Berlin becomes even more attractive for international event planners.

5. Berlin

Berlin hosts more than 113,000 events a year, an especially impressive number when you consider that it only just started actively marketing to the convention industry in 2001. More than 9.1 million travel to Berlin to conduct business and the 2012 opening of the new Berlin Brandenburg airport should only cause those numbers to soar even further.

Meeting planners are appreciative of the city's commitment to green initiatives. The new fairground hall of ICC Berlin is also highly anticipated by event organizers. It is also interesting to note that Berlin is the world market leader for medical conventions.

When business comes to an end for the day, convention-goers may find themselves at a loss as to just where to begin as Berlin is renowned for just about everything, from its orchestras and museums (check out the East Side Gallery for a moving display showcasing the Berlin Wall as art) to its architecture and nightlife.

Why is there already luggage in the terminal? Some sort of equipment testing?

Yep. There is a 4 months testing routine with 10.000 extras almost every day and dummy luggage.

2 old airports will be closed at the same evening, while all workers and airport equipment are transferred to the new one, BER, in one night. All test actions therefore are aimed to provide a smooth start for the next morning at a new single airport....

Several Berlin highways will be blocked at that night to ensure free rides for the convoys.
