Kenmore, NY - Buffalo's "First Suburb"

Village of Kenmore, Buffalo’s First Suburb.

The Village of Kenmore is a suburb of Buffalo, New York, located on the northern border of Buffalo. The Village was incorporated in 1899 from part of the Town of Tonawanda, which surrounds it on 3 sides. Kenmore’s 1.4 square mile area (3.7 km2) has a population density of over 10,400 per square mile (4,000 per km2), making it one of the most dense areas in Western New York. It is known as “Buffalo’s first suburb” as other nearby municipalities existed before Buffalo became a large city.

The American Planning Associated has recognized Kenmore as one of the “Great Places in America,” one of 3 in the Buffalo area.

Major streets extending into Kenmore from Buffalo include Delaware Avenue and Elmwood Avenue, which are the major commercial streets, along with parts of Kenmore Avenue which is the border between Buffalo and Kenmore.

The Eberhardt Mansion (1893) is the former residence of the founder of Kenmore, and sits across from the Buffalo city line at Delaware and Kenmore Avenues.

The northern and eastern areas of Kenmore are predominately mid-century single family homes, which blend into adjacent areas of Tonawanda.

I can vouch that Kenmore is indeed a great, walkable suburb!

thanks for the photos.

Nice pictures! I did a Kenmore thread on here several years ago, and figured I would be the only person to ever cover it.

My great grandfather was one of the people who built the houses in Deerhurst Park.

Although Deerhurst Park is technically not in the village limits, it is directly adjacent and shares the same zip code. There are some really great stone houses in Deerhurst.

The red Medina sandstone, such as was used in the Eberhardt Mansion, isn't often seen in 20th Century or residential construction, but was used for many of the finest buildings constructed in the late 19th century. This house may have used recovered stone from earlier buildings.

Here is one more from the Kenmore-Tonawanda border area. The current St. John the Baptist church was built in 1951 on the site of its original log chapel from 1833. Parish was founded by Fr. John Neumann in 1836, who later was ordained as Saint John Neumann. It was said that at the time of the church's founding, Neumann could hear the roar of Niagara Falls from here, although it is 13 miles away.

At some point I plan to have a full Tonawanda and North Tonawanda collection, but will probably focus on the older river and canal areas, so this is a good a place as any for these images.

Yes, Deerhurst Park is just across the village limits, but given the proximity, I figured it was worth mentioning.

My family apparently also has ties to St. John Neumann, from his time in the area. My maternal grandmother's family were very early residents of the Williamsville area, from what I'm told.

The only other I am aware of is a very small building across from the Municipal Building on Delaware Road, designed as a medical office by architect Duane Lyman, better known for the much grander art deco Niagara Mohawk Building in Syracuse, among others. I only have a partial image of it in the background, but here is a link to the street view.

FYI the art deco Municipal Building in Kenmore was designed by E.B. Green.
