Manitoba needs to moving from a mining tax to a royalty based system.

They currently just take a portion of the mines profits, when in reality they should be taking a portion based on how much of a certain commodity was extracted from the crown land.

King Wheat is back on the big boards in Winnipeg! Even if they're not really boards anymore and only sort of in Winnipeg:

Richardson's are in one of the groups planning to buy Viterra. I wonder how it will play out if they purchase them.

So, no more subpar growth for Manitoba, it seems:

http://www.newswire.ca/en/story/9402...-rbc-economics

3.4% is excellent growth in a current world context. The $1B deficits shouldn't continue after this year, with those numbers.

A deal has been struck between Richardson's and Viterra. I feel like this is a positive thing. Richardson's head office is still in Winnipeg Right?

^of course.

Richardson was in the mix for what ended up being Viterra several years back. The lost out back then, but it seems they are now going to end up getting what they were after. Good for Winnipeg.

That's what I thought. I just remember last year one of our major companies being bought out by a Toronto Company and for some reason I thought it was Richardson.

^hudbay

this is very good news for winnipeg....my concern about the wheat board was the cascading effect that it would have with other companies....the magnet for their presence in the city will be weakened causing a far greater loss than the board itself....this will help keep the centre of gravity in winnipeg and help disuade companies like cargill from moving to calgary.

it might not, but this certainly helps maintain winnipeg's status as grain trade centre

Queen Lizzie doesn't deserve 1 penny of our mining output. Period.

I'm curious whether or not this will end up with more head office jobs in Winnipeg, or just out in the field.

Somebody help me with the timeline. Before it was Viterra, what was it? Manitoba Pool? Sask Pool? UGG? Didn't Manitoba Pool and UGG take over Sask Pool? Somehow the jobs all ended up in Regina though ...

You might want to educate yourself on what royalties are... or for that matter what crown lands are as well. Specifically in the context of mining and extraction of natural resources in Canada.

I'm not sure of the history beyond this point, but Sask Wheat Pool obtained Agricore United and formed Viterra (circa 2008?). I believe Richardson purchased assets then too.

Agricore was Manitoba and Alberta Pools. Sask Wheat Pool attempted to take them over. Richardson put in a better offer, Sask Wheat Pool upped theirs to "win" - however, they had to sell facilities to Cargill and Richardson to afford the new offer.

Was at Polo Park the other day an noticed that Esprit has vacated their location (second floor next to Spencer Gifts and Buffalo).

It is a pretty large spot. Anyone know if anyone is slated to take over the space? I can't imagine that it will be empty for long.
