Corktown is a neighbourhood southeast of downtown Hamilton, bounded by James, Main, Wellington
and the base of the Niagara Escarpment. Many of Hamilton's early Irish settlers lived here and worked
on the Toronto, Hamilton & Buffalo Railway that passes through the neighbourhood. The letters "TH&BRY"
can still be seen on the railroad overpasses and the fomer terminal now serves as the Hamilton GO
Centre. Today Corktown is a high density neighbourhood comprised of tightly packed Victorian era
houses and 1960's high rises. The neighbourhood also features the St. Joseph's Hospital campus, a
commercial area on John St. and a pub district on Augusta St., which is shown at the end of the tour.

The Winking Judge could very well be the best pub in all of Canada. I miss it.

Stopped here last Friday with my father and 9-year-old son. The evening crowd was in, and they took care of us, parking suggestions, beer suggestions (even offered to buy me a beer--but I'd already had a pint of what he wanted me to sample!), great simple food (porter stew with lots of carrots, mushrooms, and big chunks of beef on mashed spuds), and excellent beer, including three cask ales and a lot of local beers. HIGHLY recommended for both beer and pubtalk: we had two hour's worth of excellent conversation on U.S. politics (of the 1940s and 50s!), legal drinking age issues, and, of course, beer. Excellent place, tucked away on a side street in Hamilton. The father and my son both enjoyed it as well, and that's not easy.

They did an AWESOME job fixing up these apts (and the ajoining houses too)!
We were going to rent here b4 the Olympia but the Apt was too small!

I've done a ton of Hamilton tours and I can still squeeze out a few more.

It's a relatively unknown city, but it's one of the most interesting in Canada from an urban perspective.

^^ Cabbagetown in Toronto has some themed streetscaping. Big green lantern-type street lights. Very neat.

John should have the same type of streetscaping as the rest of downtown (new sidewalks w/ urban braile, themed streetlights, trees, benches, art, etc)... and I ALSO like the Shamrock'ish theme. In (Old) Montreal they have baby blue Fleur-de-Lys's painted every couple of meters on Rue Nontre-Dame Est. Painted right onto the road itself! I think John would look fun w/ Shamrocks painted onto the road!

I'll reveal my vision for Corktown a lil later... once I fig out just what it actually is! hahaha

I haven't visited Hamilton snce playing basketball there back in high school. Why do I just pass this place up on the way to Toronto? These photo tours are high incentive to visit. Thanks.
