S.L. draws up airport plans - Renovation will begin next spring and be finished by 2024

By Annie Knox - Associated Press

Mountain views, faster takeoffs and workout equipment are a few things Salt Lake City officials are considering as they draw up plans for a nearly $2 billion remake of the city's airport. Scott G Winterton, Deseret News

SALT LAKE CITY — Mountain views, faster takeoffs and workout equipment are a few things Salt Lake City officials are considering as they draw up plans for a nearly $2 billion remake of the city's airport.

The bulk of the budget for construction comes from fees airlines pay to use the facility and from passengers buying tickets, among a few other sources. Federal grants make up about 11 percent of the bankroll.

Some wings of the airport are about 50 years old. Others date back over 30 years. That means a new facility is overdue, said Salt Lake City International Airport spokeswoman Barbara Gann.

"Airport years are longer" than human ones she said, due to changing technology and increases in traffic. The original facility was designed to shepherd about 12 million travelers each year, roughly half as many as it does now...

Transportation plan will result in economic growth, group says

Rail lines are under construction along 2150 South between State Street and 1000 East Monday, June 24, 2013.

Jasen Lee, Deseret News

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/8...roup-says.html

SALT LAKE CITY — The key to economic growth in Utah will be continued monetary support of the area’s transportation system, according to a new report.

According to a comprehensive study conducted by the Economic Development Research Group of Boston, further state and local government investment in broad-based transportation could result in more than 180,000 new jobs over the next three decades.

The report, commissioned by the Salt Lake Chamber’s Transportation Coalition, showed that if municipal governments and transportation agencies fully implement Utah’s Unified Transportation Plan, the result would be almost 183,000 cumulative new jobs created by 2040, $130.5 million in additional household income, $183.6 billion in additional gross domestic product and $22.2 billion in additional tax revenues from economic growth...

UTA to start using natural gas-fueled buses

Fleet » Agency expects to save money in long run and help the environment.

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) The Utah Transit Authority has its first new natural gas bus ready for service and will have a total of 24 in service by the end of the year. The new buses look like the diesel fuel buses, except for the tops of the buses where the natural gas tanks are located.

By Lee Davidson | The Salt Lake Tribune

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/politic...legra.html.csp

The Utah Transit Authority is hopping on the bus of a growing national movement to power transit vehicles with compressed natural gas (CNG) — which is cheaper and cleaner than diesel, although CNG-fueled buses cost more to buy.

UTA just took delivery of its first 10 CNG buses and is painting and preparing them — and training drivers and mechanics on their features. The buses may be seen on the streets shortly in test runs, but are not expected to carry passengers until Aug. 18, the next schedule-change day.

"We’re doing it for clean air. We’re doing it for energy independence [using Utah natural gas instead of diesel from imported oil]. We’re doing it for economics," said UTA General Manager Michael Allegra...

Planning and design using limited taxpayer dollars demands infinite creativity and rigid accountability. Much of CRSA's work is for the federal and state governments, as well as local municipalities.

Allegiant Air plans a third route from Provo airport - Twice-a-week nonstop service to Los Angeles International Airport begins Sept. 26.

Paul Beebe - The Salt Lake Tribune

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/money/5...ional.html.csp

(File photo | The Associated Press) Allegiant Air is adding a third destination from Provo Municipal Airport with a twice-a-week nonstop jet service to Los Angeles International Airport, starting Sept. 26.

Allegiant Air is adding a third destination from Provo Municipal Airport.

The quirky low-cost, high-fee airline based in Las Vegas will begin twice-a-week nonstop jet service to Los Angeles International Airport on Sept. 26, with introductory $54.99 one-way introductory fares.

Allegiant will fly the route on Thursdays and Sundays, but the days may change in the future, spokeswoman Jessica Wheeler said Friday.

The airline will use Airbus A319, A320, or McDonnell Douglas MD-80 aircraft on the route, Wheeler said.

Allegiant began offering nonstop flights between Provo and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in Arizona last year.

Last month, Allegiant started service between Provo and Oakland International Airport in California.

"We are grateful for the amazing partnership we enjoy with Allegiant," Provo Mayor John Curtis said.

Wheeler held out the possibility that Allegiant may add more destinations.

"We’ve been really happy with all of our service from Provo so far (and) will continue to look at it for other destinations,"she said.

Can they have more specific new routes from PVU-FLL/SFB/PLG/GRR/RFD/MFD/PGD/BLI and etc. I think this route has done extremely very well. Give it some more competition against DL. They will take advantage of it.

DRAPER, Utah – U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx today (8-16-13) attended the grand opening of the new Draper TRAX light rail line, which significantly expands transit options for thousands of residents and commuters in the Salt Lake City area. The extension, which connects downtown Salt Lake City to the suburb of Draper, is the final project in a seven-year, 70-mile effort. Secretary Foxx was joined at the event by Senator Orin Hatch, Deputy Federal Transit Administrator Therese McMillan, Governor Gary Herbert and local officials.

“This expanded light rail service has generated thousands of jobs and will improve access to employment and other economic opportunities for decades to come,” said Secretary Foxx. “Salt Lake’s bold vision to place transit within easy reach of residents and connect dozens of communities along the fast-growing Wasatch Front is an excellent example of how investments in transportation lay a strong foundation for future growth.”

The Draper Light Rail Project, a 3.8-mile extension of Utah Transit Authority (UTA) TRAX service, created approximately 2,000 jobs during construction, according to UTA.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) committed $116 million for the Draper extension through its New Starts Capital Investment Grant Program.

“FTA has been proud to support Utah’s efforts to more than double the region’s transit rail capacity, bringing world-class public transportation choices to one of the country’s fastest growing regions,” said FTA Administrator Peter Rogoff. “Generations of riders will now have seamless access to Salt Lake City International Airport, the central business district, and Draper – all without sitting in traffic on I-15.”

The project includes three new stations with park-and-ride-facilities. The TRAX extension to Draper is the final project in UTA’s Frontlines 2015 Program, a $2.9 billion program to build 70 miles of rail in seven years. Four new light rail lines and one new commuter rail line have more than doubled UTA’s rail system. FTA committed approximately $545 million in total to the Frontlines 2015 Program, which includes $90 million through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Salt Lake County buying land for new district attorney's office

http://m.sltrib.com/sltrib/mobile3/5...ffice.html.csp

By Mike Gorrell, The Salt Lake Tribune

After years of wrangling, new headquarters for the Salt Lake County district attorney's office are now set to be built adjacent to — appropriately enough — the Courthouse TRAX Station.

County Mayor Ben McAdams said Tuesday the county bought a 3.1-acre parcel on the northeast corner of 500 South and Main Street from Property Reserve, Inc. (PRI), the real-estate arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The sales contract put the price at $9.1 million.

Currently a parking lot, the new site puts prosecutors right next door to 3rd District Court in the Matheson Courthouse, saving them the block-long walk past Grand America Hotel from what had been proposed as the D.A. office site — the southwest corner of 600 South and State Street...

$30 Monthly UTA Transit Pass for Salt Lake City Residents Proposed as Air Quality Initiative

http://www.tundria.com

By Bob Nelson

http://kuer.org/post/30-monthly-uta-...ity-initiative

Salt Lake City may become the first city in the nation to offer a 30-dollar-a-month transit pass for every resident. Mayor Ralph Becker says the initiative designed to improve air quality is a complex agreement between the city and Utah Transit Authority, he hopes will be simple for residents to access if it’s approved by the city council. Stan Penfold is the councilman who brought the proposal before the council. He says what people want are options for getting out of their cars.

“And this is a huge step in providing options for anybody who lives in Salt Lake City with a really easy and convenient opportunity to take transit instead of taking their car," says Penfold.

The pilot program has UTA covering the 60 dollar balance of the 90 dollar retail cost of the pass, the same way it handles the Eco Pass with large businesses and learning institutions. The city would pay the estimated 150-thousand dollars in annual administration fees. City Councilman Kyle LaMalfa represents District 2. He says with enough participation the transit pass will eventually become revenue neutral.

“What the administration has done is totally aligned with the city council priority on transportation and aligned with our goals of a transportation master plan for the city that’s transit oriented,” says LaMalfa.

The pass would be paid along with the monthly city utility bill. The proposed program is expected to be on the agenda at next the city council meeting on Tuesday. If approved, the new program could be operating as early as January next year.

Sugar House streetcar testing underway

Scott G. Winterton, Deseret News

By Jasen Lee, Deseret News

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/8...-underway.html

...Planning for the Sugar House streetcar began in 2006, and construction on the line started in April 2012. Development of the $55.5 million project was a joint partnership between Salt Lake City, South Salt Lake and UTA.

What distinguishes the streetcar line from UTA’s TRAX light-rail lines is that most streetcars operate in a vehicle travel lane near the sidewalk, while light-rail lines typically operate in a dedicated guideway in the middle of a street.

The streetcar’s slower speeds and frequent stops generate pedestrian traffic and encourage support of retail businesses, UTA officials said.

The S-Line, as it's being called, runs in a historic rail corridor that will feature seven stations along the route.

“The S-Line name refers to the place as a whole,” Bowman said. “In other words, it’s the streetcar line itself, as well as the adjacent greenway space (that) is designed to reflect the region’s industrial history.”...

The Sugar House streetcar takes a test run Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, in Salt Lake City. (Scott G Winterton, Deseret News)

...The S-Line is the latest addition to UTA’s light- and commuter-rail system.

In April, the $350 million airport TRAX extension began taking passengers between Salt Lake City International Airport and Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City.

It was one of several rail projects UTA had on its construction agenda over the past few years. The others included the $535 million Mid-Jordan TRAX extension and the $370 million West Valley City TRAX line, both of which began operation in August 2011.

The $212 million, 3.8-mile Draper TRAX extension began operation in August, and the $850 million FrontRunner south commuter-rail extension that runs from downtown Salt Lake City to Provo began operation in December 2012.

The Draper TRAX line marked the completion of UTA's FrontLines 2015 project, which added more than 70 miles of new rail lines to the UTA system. The project was completed two years ahead of schedule and $300 million under budget, according to the agency...

New streetcar bringing optimism for Sugar House’s economic future

http://eastcentralcc.org

By Andrew Adams, Deseret News

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/8...ic-future.html

...“I’ve been really impressed with the way things keep getting better and better because of the development in the area,” glass artist Wayne Jacobsen said.

The optimism has spilled north a block to the twice-displaced Sugar House Coffee.

“We aren’t moving again. This is where we’re going to stay,” said general manager Emily Potts. “The first location was definitely the one we would have rather have been in, but this is going good. Business is thriving.”...

Optimism grows over Sugar House's economic future as crews test the new S-line streetcar, which will debut in December. (Todd Hougaard, Deseret News)

General manager of Sugar House Coffee Emily Potts said her business has been displaced twice and they are lucky to still be in business. She said she felt optimistic about the future and that UTA'S new streetcar will benefit the coffee shop. (Todd Hougaard, Deseret News)

Salt Lake City's Sugar House District Streetcar Prepares For Public Launch

By Jason Lee, Deseret News

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/8...ic-launch.html

A streetcar prepares to depart from the Fairmont stop, 2216 S. McClelland St., as part of the new UTA S-Line in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013. The official grand opening of the line will be held on Thursday with service to the public beginning on Saturday. (Matt Gade, Deseret News)

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake Valley's light-rail system is adding a new route this weekend.

The grand opening of the Utah Transit Authority’s Sugar House streetcar is set for Sunday.

The $37 million, 2-mile streetcar line will run from the 2100 South Central Pointe TRAX station to McClelland Street (1045 East) and Sugarmont Drive (2225 South). Testing will continue this week until the line officially opens Sunday...

Matt Gade, Deseret New

..."We are extremely excited by the return of streetcars to Salt Lake City,” said Salt Lake City spokesman Art Raymond. “This easy-to-use mode fills in a transit gap in a manner that is very neighborhood and business friendly, contributes to the overall livability of the area, and is another effort to address our ongoing air quality concerns.”

Raymond said the streetcar corridor complements and expands options for getting around the city's "second downtown" and has helped create more than $400 million in associated investment and development.

“While the last of our once expansive streetcar grid was erased over 60 years ago, look for this opening to mark a resurgence in neighborhood rail transit in Utah's capital city," he said.

New streetcar offers different transit experience
-
The S-Line train will travel at just 15 mph, surrounded by a park built in a historic rail corridor.

By Lee Davidson, The Salt Lake Tribune

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/politic...etcar.html.csp

VIDEO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAs1ZgdJIkg

Unlike fast TRAX and even more rapid FrontRunner trains, the new Sugar House Streetcar cruises leisurely at about 15 mph — and reaches a maximum of only 25 mph.

While fences and barbed wire keep pedestrians away from TRAX and FrontRunner tracks for safety, the new streetcar is in the middle of what essentially will become a long park. It is an historic rail corridor with new bike and walking trails near tracks, along with sculptures, greenery and even bocce ball courts.

"It’s pretty exciting that an old rail corridor is going to carry a streetcar plus all these amenities," said Jim Webb, project manager for the Utah Transit Authority. "It’s more like a linear park next to a streetcar. It’s something akin to the River Walk in San Antonio. It’s a boat you ride there. This is a train."

UTA officials showed off the new streetcar — officially called the S-Line — to the news media on Wednesday before its grand opening ceremonies on Thursday, and its opening to the public on Saturday, when anyone who brings a can of food for the needy will be given free fare...

"In the same way that the Riverwalk transformed downtown San Antonio, and the 16th Street Mall has revitalized downtown Denver, building on the assets of Sugar House and South Salt Lake will make this streetcar district one of the premier urban neighborhoods in the region." Soren Simonsen, Salt Lake City Councilman

http://www.shstreetcar.com

Greenway and Trail >

In addition to construction of the streetcar line itself, the partners behind the project completed a public involvement process in March 2012 that found the community overwhelmingly supports the creation of a greenway---to include plazas, the Parley's Trail, and extensive landscaping---along the streetcar corridor from 500 East to McClelland Street.

The Salt Lake City Council recently approved a budget amendment to fund the creation of the greenway, and the streetcar team is moving forward with plans for the linear "park."

finalized but for the most part, this is what it will be for phase 1. Phase
2 will add the additional concourse to the north connected with tunnels
and automated people mover train. There is also space reserved for a
large airport hotel built adjacent to the terminal in phase 2.

As for other SLC news, the new Alaska routes have been mentioned.
Alaska has moved to terminal 1 and operates out of concourse A.
Previously they had used a Delta gate and check-in was in terminal 2.
Alaska could indeed add more routes but they are limited on gate space.
SLC-Hawaii nonstop on Alaska is not likely right now because they don't
have the aircraft with the needed range and performance to make it
nonstop from SLC. There is enough demand, but it will have to be
one-stop via other cities. Mexico could happen, we'll see.

Other new routes include Delta non-stop to Raleigh/Durham, NC
which started today. SkyWest (Delta Connection) was awarded essential
air service grants from the federal government to start new flights from
SLC to Moab and Vernal beginning in March. There will be two flights a
day to each city (1 on Sat/Sun). This service will replace existing service
from Vernal to Denver and Moab to Denver on Great Lakes Airlines.
The flights to Vernal and Moab will be operated with 30 seat Embraer
Brasilia aircraft.

The Delta/Alaska competition is heating up and it will be interesting to
see what Delta does to protect its turf.

Wow! I'm sure they will be so successful. I can't wait to see it. I'm sure they will construction a new concourse, ticket counter, automated trams, add new CBP facility, new inline baggage screening system, more new concessions, and adds new TSA checkpoint as well. It will be so beautiful a new terminal, new concourse and etc.
