If I am not mistaken the Winnipeg MR Mikes steak house closed down in June or July 2020 and has reopened with a new franchise

Shake Shack announces they will open 34 restaurants in Canada. I would think Winnipeg will get at least one, maybe two.

I've heard nothing but good things about their burgers. Looking forward to trying one!

Their burgers are great.

I'm sure Mark Chipman is all over that as Osmington Inc is the company bringing Shake Shack to Canada and that is David Thompson's company (Mark's business partner with the Jets).

529 Uptown located lobby of 201 Portage finally showed signs of progress this week. Construction in the concourse kitchen and a skyjack is sitting in lobby. Original opening date was Spring '23, I guess they missed that but hopefully can make summer?

Darling Bar had their soft opening in the old Forth space on McDermot. I’m glad to see something back in that space. Here is there Instagram:

Honestly I am surprised. Za as a whole has been closing locations all over the place such as the former Regent location and the former Portage Ave location which is being reopened as a Little Pizza Heaven.

I still recall one time being at one location for something to eat when the young Asian owner shows up in her sporty BMW and gets staff to bring in some boxes of product. It reminded me of the stories of young Asians coming to study in Canada and telling family back home something like a BMW M8 is what everyone drives here so the family gives them the money to get one.

Regent Ave was suppose to be Za Pizza's "flagship location" in a Free Press feature article a few years ago. It was going to be their largest location and had a patio.

Same article said the owner had plans to open up to 100 franchise units in Ontario as well as talking to perspective franchises in Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary and Halifax

That is exactly the issue with Za Bistro. There is literally nothing special about their operation and it is nearly indistinguishable for the many other built to order fast fired pizza places. Personally tried a few of them and the former Pizza Hotline in Winnipeg Square was may personal favourite. But there was really not much difference between the place Za took over in Polo Park, the former Pizza Hotline, Za itself and other similar places you see when travelling. Yet for some reason people think Pizza Hotline is trash and Za is the pinnacle of the experience. Truthful even at the height of Za I would bet in a blind taste testing most people wouldn't be able to tell it apart of any of the other choices.

^ I was never a fan of Za. I only tried it a couple of times, that was enough. Contrast their mediocre product with that red food truck on Broadway that served up the delicious pizza baked on a wood fire... little bites of heaven. Now that is something special.

Pizza Hotline is very underrated IMO. I think it's because of their discount image. But the pizza is good, especially for the price you pay.

Sounds like not much is going to change at the Monstrosity Burger location. Going from a COVID denying owner to a chain where the owner is willing to publicly make homophobic comments to run competition out of town quite literally. Look up the stories about Pots and Hands in Morris back in 2013. All George's owner needed to do was say "no comment" or stay out of it completely, but instead he felt the need to double down with his own homophobic comments to the media.
