They got to the 30th floor before construction stopped. The economy in 1933 wasn't good, so they just stopped. The building is suposed to be strong enough to support a continuation, so there's always a tiny bit of hope
Damn!! What an awesome, awesome factoid.

Yes and it chaps my ass! All half built towers should be finished. I'm looking at you, Book Tower 2 in Detroit!

I know this is an old post but, would you want Metlife North completed instead of 175 Park rising?

Ha! No. I love this project, I love 175 Park more. Now maybe we can give up a HY supertall or one of the random ones

I'd give up either Penn15 or that gaudy 740 Eighth Ave

Not only is this quite possibly the greatest cancelled skyscraper ever envisioned, but I would also go as far to say that this is the greatest skyscraper ever thought of. The design of it is flawless, a work of art that even rival the ESB. Definitely my favorite skyscraper design of all time. I just love Art Deco and the Step-back designs. Great depression architecture, it just works!

The building as we know it today was built in 3 phases, I believe over two decades. The success SL Green is having with the expanded One Madison makes me dream. Even if there were condos instead of offices, it would still be a dream to see some form of completion of the full tower here.

Nope. That’s the best we’ve got coming.

Some photos and articles featuring models of the MetLife North Building created by Theodore Conrad and Harvey Wiley Corbett from 1929, which give some really interesting details as to the two supertall designs which were proposed:
