My wife is actually now the only WFH person I know in our circle of friends.

But if you are part of a smaller group, like, say, under 10 people, there is no reason it couldn't work.

I mean, I've been WFH for 3.5 years now and while I'm sure at some point some vague reasons will be trotted out for us to come back, it's clear that there is no real downside to the arrangement for my group specifically.

The only real downside that I can identify at this point is that may lead to a lonelier existence for some when you do the WFH thing. For me it's not an issue since my wife also WFHs most days so we get to be together more than before, and I'm pretty introverted anyway so I can live without the office social scene. But I can imagine that for some people who thrive on that it is probably a bit tougher, e.g. if you're young, single and living in an apartment you might want to get out each day. Certainly in my pre marriage and kids days I would have wanted that.
Would you be able to comment on this forum all day if you were at the office?

That can be said for many of us!

The sheer amount of time saved by not commuting allows for online pontification

Saw some white-collar types heading in here this morning, which is a first. I assume they're executives checking things over, as the offices are still having furniture unpacked and don't look ready for the rank-and-file just yet.

As predicted it sounds like the drive to return to the office is kicking off with two days per week. I think it's a matter of time before employees are back full-time. Highwayman can rest easy now that the Millennials will back filling up parkades.

Wawanesa opens new downtown HQ

The Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Co. opened its new national headquarters at True North Square on Wednesday morning.

The 21-storey building, developed by True North Real Estate Development and designed by Architecture49, features 360,000 square feet of workspace for the company’s 1,300 local employees. Billed as environmentally sustainable, the headquarters are connected to True North Square and downtown Winnipeg’s skywalk system.

“This building proudly symbolizes Wawanesa’s transformation from small-town roots in rural Manitoba to a leading Canadian mutual insurance company,” Wawanesa CEO Jeff Goy said in a news release distributed before the morning event.

“Wawanesa Insurance began in 1896, when 20 farmers formed an insurance company to meet their local needs. Today, our operations span the country with over 1.6 million members, but our commitment to downtown Winnipeg and the province of Manitoba has never been stronger.”

Wawanesa, which had been based at 191 Broadway, announced the move in 2019. The company said Wednesday its new headquarters were built to accommodate a growing workforce, which has doubled in size over the last decade.

“We are thrilled to officially welcome Wawanesa to True North Square and see their vision of an innovative, inviting and purpose-built employee home come to life in opening their new national headquarters,” Jim Ludlow, president of True North Real Estate Development, said. “Wawanesa has long held tremendous pride in their Manitoba roots, and their continued commitment to their employees and to being part of a dynamic downtown Winnipeg core also speaks very loudly through this stunning space.”

The building includes a café with healthy food options and compostable servingware, a child-care centre that has yet to open, and floors dedicated to health and wellness and training and development.

Wawanesa also announced a $500,000 investment in downtown revitalization, with $450,000 over three years to support the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ’s environmental team and a $50,000 contribution to the Downtown Community Safety Partnership.

Wawanesa is one of Canada’s largest mutual insurers, with more than $3.5 billion in annual revenue and assets of $10 billion.

Does the 23 maybe include the mechanical penthouse? Not sure otherwise.

I wonder if the café is open to the public. I'd love to check out the building.

Also, just need some Olympic bars and that'll be a dope gym. It'd be super cool to work out looking down on TNS.

It is not, it's exclusive to employees of the building.
