^I went to the open house a few weeks back and it's looking very nice. The brick restoration of the original buildings is spot on and the riverwalk is inviting. It's wonderful to see the river used to extenuate the development and people are now able to access it.

Funnily enough, Related and former And. Moreno both wanted more density, up to 1,600 units, but the property is in two separate wards and the other alderman put the kibosh on that. Too dense and complaints from NMBY's.

Also- it’s on the national register- and the department of the interior objected to much of the original plan as it involves significantly altering the site by demolishing old buildings and erecting new ones.

That said- did the river walk when it first opened, they did a bang-up job on it!!

Lathrop New Construction

That’s impressive. Exceedingly rare these days to have new construction designed and executed so well (in an historical style) to have it appear - to the semi-trained eye - to be a faithful restoration.

Backer of Time Out food hall has bigger plans for Fulton Market

Chicago-based real estate investor L3 Capital is planning to redevelop a pair of bank branches on Randolph Street and a nearby parking lot in the trendy corridor after buying them last month in a $19.2 million deal.

L3 announced via its Instagram page that it purchased a trio of properties at 932 W. Randolph St., 1020 W. Randolph St. and 1020 W. Lake St., which "will be redeveloped into Class A retail and boutique office space," the post said.
Losing a parking lot and a drive-thru bank. Sounds good to me!

^ Wow, that's awesome news!

And I think there was a proposal for the other drive-thru bank building on Morgan street (just south of CTA station) - anyone know the status of that?

You have somewhat of a point.
I suggested the Sears Tower windows should be upgraded, much like the Old Post Office windows were upgraded. Yes it would alter the landmark tower, but I am tired of the dull bronze with rust streaks. Black-framed smoke glass would look sweet.

But Mr Skysoar suggested the entire limestone-clad post office should be painted black, so....

It is surprising to me that $500 million in upgrades would not include at least some restoration/cleanup of the exterior windows. A reskin would probably cost another $500 mil lol. And how old are the windows now? almost 50 years... what's the max that office windows can last?

This comment is a bit off topic. However, I finally had a chance this weekend to visit the gallery at 659 Wrightwood. For those who have not visited, it is a must. For those who have visited, I am sure that you were as inspired by the architecture as I was. The architect is Tadao Ando, who is self taught apparently. Plus, there is a great art exhibit there right now.

Essentially forever if maintained. Both glass nor aluminum breakdown over a geological timescale. The weak point is the seals which are plastic composites and prone to drying out and cracking. Those seals can be and are replaced regularly which is probably something included in the scope of this project to some degree. But that does nothing to alter the appearance of the building.
