This project and 1338 W Lake are going to create a block long podium wall

What is this trend with the jarring change of materials? Are zoning laws forcing such unfavorable geometries that the facade clutter is needed to break up the massing? Also nope to that podium.

Doesn't feel very "West Loop" more of a river north feel. But happy to see tall proposals are still coming in.

Yikes. EVERYTHING about this is just a mess.

Should go right back to the drawing board.

bKL needs to hire a new design principal.

The design looks similar to parcel 'O' at LSE, also designed by bkL. Like chopping off various parts of different buildings and gluing them together to make something else. Hopefully, the City Committee on Design will have some things to say about it. That sawtooth crown is ridiculously jarring too.

This is the best description for both Parcel O and this proposal. It feels disjointed and hyperactive.

Like the height but that's about it.

It's like bKL took their design from 5th and Brazos in Austin (which was already a messy mishmash) and decided to make it more busy and convoluted.

The southern elevation is the most cohesive as far as the tower goes, but still has vertical stripes fighting the horizontal. The parking podium is just lame.

ALT 2 Renderings

There were ALT 2 renderings that weren't ready for the PDF, but these were shown today and they stress the vertical. This design is slightly better.

https://chicago.urbanize.city/post/c...ws-1300-w-lake

Urbanize has a good article of the Committee on Design review of this building, and the comments are dead-on:

"Brian Lee spoke next, questioning what the development actually contributes to the neighborhood. Lee said he didn’t understand the story behind the project and that the development needs a bigger idea. Turning his attention to the facade, Lee posited that the facade seemed like an uninspired collage of different elements, and that it can’t just be decoration but should reinforce a bigger idea.

Sara Beardsley chimed in at the end to express concern over the lack of coherence in the facade design, with an expression that seems to change arbitrarily and make the building look top heavy. Beardsley encouraged the design team to rethink the facade and figure out how to make it more unique or special, but also more coherent."

Great comments by the committee. Hopefully this design can improve because the density and height are appreciated.

The design does appear to feel more "corporate campus", if that makes sense, and doesn't really seem to engage with the design characteristics of the neighborhood.

I love the height, but agree with the Committee on Design about the architects going back to the drawing board on this one.
