Fort Wayne (Perry Township) -

Earthwork has begun for Trine University Fort Wayne - a $40 million, ~ 110,000 SF academic facility that is being developed in partnership with Parkview Health. The new facility, which is expected to open in fall 2024, just gained a $3 million pledge from the Surack Family Foundation to support the project. It is to be built on the north side of Union Chapel Road, near I-69 -

With the West Terminal complete, the next phase of Fort Wayne International Airport's "Project Gateway" expansion is gearing up. It's good seeing Indiana's 2nd largest city invest in better commercial airline infrastructure -

Fort Wayne International Airport Awards Clayco East Terminal Expansion and Renovation Project
Katie Robinson | FWIA
December 2022 Press Release

Construction of a 35,500-square-foot renovation and expansion will start in May 2023 and enhance the regional airport’s terminal building to support continued growth.

Fort Wayne, Ind. – Clayco, a full-service, turnkey real estate, architecture, engineering, design-build and construction firm, was recently awarded the Fort Wayne International Airport’s (FWA) East Terminal Expansion project, as a part of the airport’s continuing Project Gateway. Construction of the Mead & Hunt designed project will commence in May 2023 and includes the renovation of approximately 10,500-square-feet of concourse area, as well as the expansion of approximately 5,000-square-feet of first level space designated for airport operations...

...Beyond the planned renovation and expansion, the project scope includes relocating all airline gates and passenger boarding bridges to the second level, expansion of the TSA security checkpoint area; relocating the airport restaurant and creating a new frequent flyer lounge. Work will also include new and improved public areas including additional restrooms, new meeter and greeter space, expanded circulation areas and vertical transportation. The East Terminal Expansion project will also see a continuation of FWA’s commitment to accessibility with the extension of the airport’s new cane trail, adding additional accessible counter spaces, and more...

New signage is up at Electric Works, and like everything else with this project, it looks pretty good. I wonder if they will restore the old faded paint on the masonry -

Also, Fort Financial Credit Union celebrated the grand opening of their new, 28,000 SF headquarters at 8815 Lima Rd this past week. It's a good-looking, compact project -

Agreed. A lot of other mid-size cities would be lucky to get this kind of higher-quality infill.

Speaking of, another one that I think turned out really well and that wrapped up at the end of last year is the new Ironworks Plaza in Mishawaka. In terms of placemaking, this is a pretty sweet space for a small city. I found these finished photos at the CM's website -

Aww thanks! I really do enjoy doing these updates. Even though I'm "non-local", a lot of these cities are only an hour or two from Kalamazoo. There's so much happening in this vast area, and there are a lot of parallels to developments where I am at in Southwest Michigan.

I wish there were more "boots on the ground" type updates from others that might be living in these areas (construction photos, major project updates, etc). I just hit on things as they pop up on the news, or across my various feeds, based on what I think might be of interest to others. I know I'm missing things, and there are plenty of gaps in the updates. I know there are people out there reading this, and I'm optimistic that over time, more people might start to post updates here. But if not, I'll just keep chipping away at things as I can, at least as long as I continue to find joy in doing it.

According to Greater Fort Wayne Inc., construction reportedly "resumed" Monday on the stalled-out Lofts at Headwaters Park. It's not even building work yet, just site prep. The construction cost estimate has also reportedly ballooned, from $67 million in 2020 to $97 million by summer 2022. It is likely $100 million+ now. No word on where the extra $30 million is coming from -

Phase II-A of riverfront development wrapped up last month, with the opening of the connection between Promenade Park and Headwaters Park. The project features repaved walkways, native plants, green space, and more, set against the rather-sharp-looking backdrop of the $90 million Riverfront at Promenade Park development -

Mishawaka -

Construction is underway on the city's new Fire Station No. 2. The new station will be located just down the street from the current one, which sits at McKinley and Main. It will include several unique amenities, included dedicated bedrooms and a women-only unit, to better serve the city's first full-time, all-female ambulance crew. Estimated construction cost is $12 million, and it could open as early as September 2024 -
