You almost forget just how massive and tall they were and how they dominated everything around them.

The World Trade Center, and the Twin Towers. They are my favorite 2 buildings in the world that even came to exist. I miss them the most. Those buildings made me a skyscraper buff, and gave me my future goal of gaining a masters degree in both architecture, and engineering. I know it would take a long time, but I want to gain two masters.

I grew up with those two buildings in front of my face. I don't care if people don't find them attractive, but to me they were. They glistened like a million stars at night, and they were really dominating just standing there keeping Lower Manhattan with a strong anchor.

I still wished they rebuilt the Twin Towers even if it wasn't going to be taller. I will miss those buildings and the people that worked and died in them, and grew around their presence. I never got to visit them, but my dad did. He took pictures though I can't post them here, because it's an old camera, and I can't upload them.

For those that are curious about the Windows of the World Restaurant and the view even though, and I regret it I really want to go there. I didn't went my dad went to the W.T.C. The restaurant had a strict dressing code. You had to wear a suit to get inside the building or else they would seat you elsewhere. That would mean the next door bar. Another thing was this restaurant was expensive, and they cooked only using electricity, because of fears of terrorism, and gas explosions. Oh well here are some free pictures from Flickr since I can't upload anything from my dads.

The picture below is the bar with the less strict dress code.

RIP World Trade Center we will miss you 1972-2001.

If we in Chicago opened a deck on the roof of the Aon Center it would be the closest thing to imitating what the WTC rooftop deck had.
I got to visit the WTC observatory in 2000. It remains my favorite of all skyscraper observatories, because of the combination of the outdoor deck (giving you the opportunity to, as another poster said, see the building you were standing on) and the indoor deck where you could get right up to the window and really look down at the rest of downtown. People were/are critical of the complex for being "anti-urban", but to me it felt like it encompassed a lot of public space, with the plaza, lower level mall, two observatory floors in #2 and Windows on the World in #1. There's a lot of optimism about the new complex being much better overall, but it remains to be seen if it will have the same feeling of being open to the public.

I love the black and white picture of Windows on the World a few posts up. Too bad I never got to experience that. Look at how ESB is perfectly centered in the view, too. I guess the view from the restaurant at the top of the new #1 will be pretty much the same.

Looking through the pictures in this thread, it's interesting to notice that they all look at least somewhat old. Of course there are the construction photos and others that are obviously from another era, but even the newest-looking pictures of the towers reveal how much time has passed since their destruction. They all depict people with outdated hair and clothing styles, or were obviously taken with film or primitive digital cameras. Just a thought...

Of course by the time the Freedom Tower is complete on 2013 Lower Manhattan would have had lost that anchor, and had that hole for a total of 12 years, and not just that there would always be this gap between 1 World Trade Center (Freedom Tower), and 2 World Trade Center. So I would know that whenever I look up something would always be missing. An identical twin.

Wow dude, I mean it when I say that that's awesome. The twins look beautiful but I'm also amazed by the amount of detail in all of the other buildings too. You definitely have talent. If you like drawing buildings, maybe you should be an architect or an engineer or something!

That's awesome you are now a little STR. Look up his work in the Skyscraper Art thread. You two should be Architects, but I want to be one too, but I am still just learning the basics of blueprint making in my drafting class, but it's a start. I was always good at art, science, and history, and average in math.

I saw those buildings when I was young, and although I mention this grew up around these two massive behemoths. There was something stable about them. I love those buildings. They weren't beautiful, but they held down Lower Manhattan like 2 anchors holding a ship to pier, but you should have seen them at night like I did. That is the greatest view of the WTC you would ever see. The North Tower with it's lit mast, and that red light on top that would glow, those dark windows that shows that people have left work, those lit ones that would mean that people were still at work. The lights would glow in different patterns. All lit up in patterns. Just I miss those buildings, and there is a 99.9 percent chance we will never see them again. Unless if some has plans to rebuild them somewhere else in NYC or nearby.

^I saw it. Most impressive. I'm not that great at hand drawings, it's harder to erase things and start over when they go wrong.
