EmaarMGF, one of India’s leading real estate developers, Friday announced plans to invest $3 billion at 10 cities in south India over the next few years. It plans to develop over 31 million square feet area in Hyderabad, Tirupati, Chennai, Coimbatore, Cochin, Mysore and Mangalore.

The plans span residential, commercial and retail, IT parks and special economic zones (SEZs) and hospitality sectors.

The company made the announcement while unveiling an integrated world-class leisure and residential community around an 18-hole golf course built with an investment of $1.4 billion (Rs.56.10 billion) here.

The unique project, first among several projects planned in south India, boasts of world-class golf course, luxury residences, large format retail facility, luxury and boutique hotels and IT SEZ.

EmaarMGF, a joint venture of Dubai-based Emaar Properties and MGF Development, developed the ‘Boulder Hills Golf & Country Club’ on 531 acres in the heart of the IT corridor in Gacchibowli.

The picturesque golf course, spread over 192 acres, is dotted with the peculiar Deccan plateau rocks and several lakes.

The project will have 110 luxury villas with a price tag of Rs.150 million to Rs 240 million. The integrated township will have 2,700 units, with 703 units in the first phase. The developers said many luxury units were already sold out.

“The most unique thing about this community is this is the only one of its kind in the country to be built around 18-hole golf course,” said EmaarMGF CEO William R. Rattazzi.

The IT SEZ called “IT Green” will have a built-up area of three million square feet and was expected to provide 37,000 jobs.

In the special purpose vehicles (SPV) for the project, EmaarMGF holds 74 percent stake while Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corp (APIIC) holds 26 percent.

EmaarMGF (south) CEO Srikant Joshi said the company has a land bank of 13,000 acres in 26 cities across India. It has 1,500 acres in south India alone.

To a query, Rattazi said EmaarMGF might revive its plans to go public in 12 to 18 months.

Deadline for Vallarpadam land acquisition ends today

Fate of the project hinges on case in High Court

KOCHI: Revenue authorities are keeping their fingers crossed as the case regarding land acquisition in Vaduthala for the rail connectivity of the proposed Vallarpadam International Container Transhipment Terminal is slated to come up before the High Court on Tuesday.

Much hinges on the outcome of this case as the land owned by 19 families in Vaduthala remains to be acquired for completing the land acquisition process for the rail connectivity.

With the deadline set by the Central government for completing the land acquisition for the road and rail connectivity ending on Saturday, revenue authorities can ill afford any further delay in completing the acquisition process.

Of the 4.30 hectares earmarked for the rail connectivity spread over four villages — Edappally North and South, Mulavukad and Cheranalloor — only 84.43 cents owned by 19 families in Vaduthala, falling within the limits of Cheranalloor village, remain to be acquired, revenue officials said. According to officials, if the court disposes of the case on Tuesday itself and the landowners decline to cooperate even after that, then the authorities would be compelled to initiate proceedings under the Land Acquisition Act.

Warrants to be served on the landowners under the Act and cash to be paid to the evictees have been kept ready, a revenue official told The Hindu.

Meanwhile, the dissenting landowners under the aegis of the Vaduthala Janakeeya Samithi are in no mood for any compromise.

“Our most import demand is that the State government should identify and register habitable land in the name of the landowners before they acquire our land,” Justine Thomas, general convener (technical), of the Samithi said.

They have also brought out an eight-point charter of demands following its meeting with the District Collector last week.

These include the longstanding demand to use the old ERG railway line, avoiding large-scale evictions in Vaduthala, and in the event of sticking to the alignment through Vaduthala, allocating six cents of land separately for each nuclear family among the displaced households.

Other demands were revision of the value of land and houses fixed by the District Level Purchase Committee, six months’ time to shift after receiving the rehabilitation land and job for at least one member from each displaced family in Cochin Port Trust even if that called for the creation of new posts to meet the qualification of the candidate.

EmaarMGF to invest Rs 12,000 cr in south

EmaarMGF Land, a joint venture between Emaar Properties PJSC of Dubai and MGF Developments of India, is planning to invest $3 billion (Rs 12,000 crore) in 10 locations across south India over the next few years.

The venture will develop residential, commercial, retail, IT, SEZs and hospitality facilities across 31 million square feet (sft) land in Chennai, Coimbatore, Mysore, Mangalore and Kochi. The company has a nationwide land bank of 13,000 acres, including 1,500 acres in south India, EmaarMGF chief executive officer, William R Rattazzi, told the media at the launch of $1.4 billion (Rs 5,600 crore) 'Boulder Hills Golf & Country Club' leisure and residential community project in Hyderabad.

The company is planning an initial public offering (IPO) after withdrawing its plans in February. "This (IPO) should take place in 12-18 months depending on market conditions. The size and price of the issue would depend upon market conditions prevailing at that time," Rattazzi said.

Boulder Hills, developed in partnership with the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation, is spread over 531 acres in Hyderabad's information technology and financial corridor of Gachibowli.

It has a fully operational 192-acre championship golf course designed by Harradine Golf, the Switzerland-based company that designed over 200 golf course projects in Europe, Africa and Asia.

The first phase of Boulder Hills comprises 703 residential units with a mix of single and multi-family units. It will be home to a special economic zone with a built-up area of 3 million sft and 'The Mall of Hyderabad' spread over 13 acres.

The mall is expected to be completed by 2010.

In the residential space, according to Rattazzi, EmaarMGF will develop luxury and super luxury gated communities and townships over 20.5 million sft. In the retail arena, the company will develop 3 million sft top-tier retail space across its southern locations. The company will introduce the 'Mall of the City' series wherever it goes.

EmaarMGF also has plans to introduce luxury and boutique properties at Andhra Pradesh in association with Four Seasons and Marriot International.

The company is planning to have 30,000 rooms in the hospitality sector over the next five years.

Their SEZ project near CIAL is among the pending ones with Kerala govt. I don't know whether it is going
to get cleared this time. They claimed to have about 150 acres for SEZ project. If they have the land ready
probably they will get nod.

Kochi, May 29 In five years, 1.7 million jobs in Information Technology (IT) sector in India will move out of tier 1 cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Hyderabad, to tier 2 cities, Siddhartha Bhattacharya, Infopark's chief executive officer, said here.

Bhattacharya was speaking Wednesday at a discussion organised by The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE), a global not-for-profit organisation promoting entrepreneurship. Infopark at Kochi is a state government-owned IT Park.


It is the better quality of life and lower operating cost that are attracting the IT companies to these cities, he said quoting research reports.


He said among the upcoming IT destinations, Kochi has many inherent advantages.


'The data transmission cost from Kochi is low. Seventy-five percent of the country's data traffic goes out from Kochi. VSNL has a 15 gigabyte gateway here. The electricity and water tariffs are one of the lowest among all the states. Compared to Bangalore, house rent is low in Kochi. The attrition rates in IT companies are below 10 percent.'


At present around 40 companies in the Infopark employ around 7,000 people. 'In next four years we expect the number of companies to go up seven to eight times.'


He said that Kerala has the highest density of IT and science professionals. 'The state's infrastructure is pretty strong, especially in telecommunication sector,' he added.


Infopark is in the process of coming out with a dedicated incubator to help start up companies. 'This is an early life support system for start ups. We will help them with issues like government clearance, finance and also help them expand,' he added.

Kochi, May 31 (IANS) Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL), one of the leading shipbuilding yards in the country, will launch five platform supply vessels (PSVs) Monday. The PSVs include Sea Turbot for Deep Sea Supply, Norway, Hellspont Daring and Hellspont Dawn for Hellspont Steam Ship, Greece, and Oliver Tide and Davidson Tide for Tide Water Marine, the US.

In a release issued here Saturday, the company said the vessels were designed in a way that would satisfy specific demands of transport of deck cargo, pipes, liquid cargo, cement/barite, unloading to rigs, production platforms and pipe-laying barges.

The vessels have been designed using Rolls Royce ship technology and all the five PSVs will be delivered between August and December 2008.

CSL commenced the ship building operations in 1978, ship repair in 1981, marine engineering training in 1993 and offshore upgradation in 1999.

As a technology leader in India, CSL has adopted the Japanese Integrated Hull Outfitting and Painting system (IHOP) for its new construction works.

A CSL official told IANS that the total cost of production of each vessel is $20 million and it was completed in a matter of six months.

“Some more outside work for the vessels is left and it would be done during the trial runs and then delivery would begin. Presently, we have orders for 20 PSVs for foreign owners valued at Rs.20 billion. We have also commenced construction of aircraft carrier for Indian Navy,” said the official.

There are areas which still need alot of work in order to sustain the IT boom in Cochin/Kochi!!!!!
Kochi is an upcoming city in Kerala and is aggressively being promoted by the state government as an IT destination. Though it doesn't have any ITES companies of significance yet, it holds a lot of potential to attract many.

But the city needs to address the following infrastructure issues:
1 Though it has the lowest power tariff among all the cities surveyed, COCHIN still experiences
some power cuts

2 Like most cities in India, Kochi lacks a decent public transport infrastructure

3 Compared to the larger cities, Kochi has only a few colleges. As ITES companies would mainly hire graduates, the state needs to ensure abundant supply of trained manpower.

4 Kochi too loses out in the perception game. The government needs to ensure that the city moves up this scale to start attracting new businesses This has improved!!!Perception plays an important role while deciding the location of a new unit. Bangalore ranked high because of the state's IT policy. Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Kochi lag behind in the IT initiatives undertaken by the government

Nod for tourism projects worth Rs. 18. 41 crore

KOCHI: Tourism development projects worth Rs.18.41 crore under the tsunami rehabilitation programme have received administrative sanction in the district. Tendering process for these projects is under way, Harbour Engineering Department said.
Under the programme, various projects had been envisaged in Fort Kochi, Cherai, Munambam and Munakkal. The tourism development project in Fort Kochi had been allocated Rs. 8.05 crore, Munambam Rs.3.62 crore, and Rs. 4.04 had been set apart for the project in Cherai.
The Rs. 5 crore-Chellanam fishing harbour and the Rs. 77-lakh Vypeen fish-landing centre had also received administrative sanction.
The Harbour Engineering Department has set up three desalination plants at a cost of Rs. 32 lakh in Chellanam, Mulavukad and Kadamakkudy and had handed them over to the respective panchayats.
Construction of seawall spending Rs.72.9 lakh under the Tsunami Rehabilitation Programme was another achievement of the department.
Dredging activities in the Perumpadappu-Kumbalanghi backwater undertaken as per the special initiative of Fisheries Minister S. Sarma was making progress. Twenty per cent of the works had been completed and Rs. 10.45 lakh of the estimated cost of Rs. 99 lakh project had been utilised.
About 60 per cent of the dredging works, worth Rs. 15 lakh, of the Chathanad fishing area had been completed.
Thirty-nine roads in the district had been renovated at a cost of Rs. 5.21 crore for which assistance was received from the Asian Development Bank. Besides, renovation of 29 more roads at a cost of Rs. 4.47 crore had also received the administrative sanction under the TRP.
Seventy per cent of the renovation works of the Varapuzha fish market had been completed while the renovation of the Njarakkal market was under way.
Tendering of project for the dredging works of the Munambam approach channel and basin, which is expected to cost Rs. 1.5 crore, had already been started.

Kochi to focus on tree-counting, making city garbage-free

KOCHI: Counting of trees and identification of spots where saplings are to be planted will be the focus areas of the Environment Day observance in the city. The civic administration has chalked out a series of programmes for June 5 for celebrating the World Environment Day.

The Corporation has decided to combine the Environment Day celebrations with an awareness campaign among children on keeping the city free of garbage, said E.M. Sunilkumar, chairman of the Town Planning Standing Committee of the Kochi Corporation.

The counting of trees in the city will be held in two phases. The counting in the Edapally, Ernakulam and Vyttila zones of the Corporation will be held between June 5 and 20. In the second phase, the counting will be held in the Palluruthy-Fort Kochi areas. Ten teams of students guided by botany teachers will carryout the tree count. The common name of the tree, its scientific name and uses will be recorded as part of the census. The Corporation has also issued directives to the officials to identify places where new saplings have to be planted as a large number of trees have been destroyed or uprooted in different parts of the city over the years. The planting of the saplings will be completed before July 30.

The Corporation is also planning to seek the support of traders and business community for the protection of trees. The Merchants’ Union and the Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry have offered to cooperate with the project, Mr. Sunilkumar said.

The Corporation will inaugurate a programme for the free distribution of waste collection boxes and two plastic buckets for every classroom in the city schools. The formal inauguration of the programme will be held on June 5 at a function to be held at the EMS Memorial Town Hall.

Cochin Shipyard launches five platform supply ships

KOCHI: It was a historic day for Cochin Shipyard Ltd. (CSL) on Monday when it, for the first time, delivered five platform supply ships in a single batch at a brief function organised at the Shipyard.

The launch of the vessels took the traditional route with the flooding of the dock. Vice-Admiral S.K. Damle, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, was the chief guest on the occasion. Cmde. M. Jitendran, Chairman and Managing Director of CSL and senior officials were present.

The vessels delivered on Monday included the seventh in a series of eight ships being built for Deep Sea Supply, Norway; two each out of the four ships ordered by Hellespont Steamship Corporation, Greece, and Tidewater Marine International Inc., U.S.A.

The simultaneous launch of five vessels on Monday builds on the good performance by the public sector shipyard over the last five years during which it has set and broken records of its achievements.

The total turnover of the Shipyard rose three times between 2002-03 and 2006-07 from Rs.235 crore to Rs. 720 crore, said a communication issued at the end of the launch of the vessels.

A record was also set in shipbuilding turnover during 2006-07 at Rs.478 crore. This achievement was again surpassed in 2007-08 with the shipbuilding income reaching Rs.600 crore (provisional figure).

Ship repair business too did well during the period with the Department turnover crossing the Rs. 240-crore-mark during 2007-08.

The CSL’s net profit registered a three-fold rise from Rs.18 crore in 2005-06 to Rs.58 crore in 2006-07. The financial performance in the year 2007-08 is expected to surpass all previous records, claimed the communication.

The platform supply ships delivered on Monday are of the popular UT-755 L design for the offshore industry. The vessels are designed for satisfying the specific demands of transport of deck cargo, pipes, liquid cargo, cement/ barite etc and unloading to rigs and production platforms and pipe-laying barges.
