For a retro skyline, raise the limit to 605 feet and you get this gorgeousness:

I'm one of those people who aesthetically just can't get behind a skyline dominated by residential with exposed balconies.

If it makes you feel any better, I have a weird hangup about a city's tallest building being residential and not office, but mixed use is okay, go figure?

So true... Mountains always help.

Right. I see where most comments are coming from in this thread, but this one has me perplexed. Fort Lauderdale has a HORRIBLE skyline.

No love for Quebec City? Shocking.

Quebec City's Skyline. by Asif A. Ali, on Flickr

Even though it lacks the pyramidal apex, it certainly is dreamy. 433ft.

Fort Lauderdale has a predominantly residential skyline (like all of Florida). At least it's dense and becoming increasingly denser.

an incredible shot of a skyline long gone.

while the vast majority of the buildings in that picture still stand, they have been swallowed up whole by modern chicago.

the tallest tower in that pre-war pic, CBoT at 605' tall (on the left), is now only the 52nd tallest building in chicago, and dropping.

Buffalo's skyline is not bad for a city of its size.

Milwaukee's tallest is 601' tall, so it's close enough to qualify for this thread:

^^^ Love that pic of Asheville. Always thought Madison had a picturesque, stout skyline. Everything very neatly in place.

Buffalo and Milwaukee look great!

Long Beach, CA is also a good contender with the ocean and mountains.. They are building a bunch out there

I totally agree with you, but Rotterdam officially no longer qualifies. Their newest skyscraper is topping out at 215m (about 700') and is almost now complete!

What about other European cities? It seems that if we're talking about beauty and a lack of skyscrapers, then there is a whole world to explore there with the historically low-rise form of their cities. Or perhaps low-rise simply doesn't make a "skyline"? What about Rome?
