We just got the crane bases in place along with initial column construction when the city ordered shutdown went into effect. The first crane was scheduled to go up this weekend with the second crane scheduled for next weekend.

The photo is from either Sunday or Monday. Construction was only shutdown for a couple days because the State SiP order which superseded the City's allows for construction to continue. But the timing of that couple days delay caused the crane installations to be rescheduled for later in the month. We have also had a boat load of rain recently that turned construction pits into ponds.

I'm so glad this one got financed and broke ground before the Pandemic.

At this rate, Austin will soon get its first supertall! I haven't been there in 12 years; should revisit when this 848-footer is done.

We may have had a supertall in the planning stages already - The ATX East Tower. But I suspect everything that hasn't broken ground will be delayed or reconfigured depending on how bad the recession turns out to be.

It's probably already been mentioned in this thread, but with this one now officially U/C, I just realized it will be the tallest building built in Texas in nearly 40 years once it's complete in a couple years.

Little old Austin making some big noise. impressive.

And it was announced today that two other buildings would break ground in January - the 774 foot 60-story BBVA Tower, and the 658 foot 40-story Tower 5C. Those two and 6 X Guadalupe will be 166 floors of skyscraper under construction all at once. That also hasn't happened in Texas since the 80s. And that's without talking about the other 30 or so high rises under construction now, including four new 500 footers and another 400 footer.

When completed this will be the 6th tallest building in Texas. A spire could have made this a supertall, but like The ATX said, Austin will likely get a supertall in the near future anyway.

Austin's skyscraper construction has left all other Texan cities in the dust. For almost 40 years the tallest building in Texas has been the 1002 ft JPMorgan Chase Tower in Houston. Austin just needs to build something at least 1003 ft to have the state's new tallest skyscraper. With this 848 ft tower, it's getting closer and closer. Houston can't keep Austin at bay for much longer.

This is probably the tallest crane to start a project in Austin. The site is huge, so a luffing crane probably wouldn't cover enough area. There's also a 328' building right across the street, so this has to be tall.

20 years ago I would have told someone to their face that they were crazy for suggesting Austin would ever rival Houston and Dallas for height. We went from having one 400 foot building for a tallest from 1984 to 2004 to having 16 buildings completed over 400 feet today, and 6 more that are doing site prep/demo.

I won't lie, that tall of a crane without structural support yet does make me a little nervous.

Especially right on the edge of a deep pit. But look, there are some horizontal planks to help stabilize the side of the pit.

Other obscure stat nerdery about this tower:

- It will make Austin the 15th US city to have an 800+ footer (16th if you consider Jersey City separate from NYC).

- It will make Texas the first US state to have 3 cities with at least one 800+ footer (Houston, Dallas, & Austin). Cali (LA & SF) and Pennsylvania (Philly & Pittsburgh) are the only other states that have multiple cities with an 800+ footer.

I'm assuming the web cam is from the top of the Fifth & West Residences Tower.
