It's great to hear from some of the high level people who can give us an idea of what the short and long term direction is. I really believe the people involved at the top of all this are committed on all fronts. DP World getting connected to the local Canpotex potash operation shows they are committed to Saint John. NBSR is upgrading both NB and Maine rail and operating equipment under their control. They have confidence in the future. CPKC and CSX have invested significant sums of money to bring their rail up to current standards for high speed freight. I expect the rail upgrade activity will ramp up again in the spring. The port and all the various transportation organizations are tied at the hip and all need to be on the same page. I believe they are.

I am glad they stated that they are working out the details on the cold storage opportunity. All that has been happening in the background so it's good to hear they are looking forward to making that a reality. That is a big opportunity.

Although they mentioned 300K hours at the port, those are the kind of jobs that produce indirect jobs as well. It's pretty hard to accurately determine the true overall employment added but every added job at the port in Saint John, or other local business, or other business outside the city is good for the larger economy.

The big takeaway for me: imported fruits and veg tend to land at USA east coast ports and shipped by refrigerated trucks to Toronto and Montreal for distribution. No reason that can’t come through Saint John with the right infrastructure in place (cold storage).

A new article from local radio stations:

Quote:
“The $205-million west side modernization project at Port Saint John has come to a close.

Officials gathered for a ribbon-cutting last Thursday to mark the completion of the years-long project.

Craig Bell Estabrooks, president and CEO of Port Saint John, said the work was finished on time and on budget.

“We had a great contractor in Pomerleau and all of the subcontractors that worked with them and we had a wonderful engineering team that worked through all of the challenges that COVID presented,” Bell Estabrooks said in an interview.

“We were prepared and ready to go, but we were also fortunate because we were living in the pre-inflationary world that we have today, so we were able to lock in very competitive unit costs and deliver a lot of those major packages in 2020 and 2021 on budget.”

The port’s president and CEO said work was “materially finished” nearly a year ago, in March 2023, but “lots of ins and outs” had to be completed after that.

Now that the upgrades are completed, the port’s container laydown capacity has more than doubled to 325,000 TEUs (ten-foot equivalent units).

Other improvements include a 345-meter berth, the addition of new refrigerated towers, dredging the main channel to be deeper and wider and an expanded intermodal yard.

Bell Estabrooks said they have already seen some benefits, including DP World adding two additional cranes at the port in 2023.

“The cranes arrived this time last year, they were commissioned last summer, and we’ve now been accepting two container ships simultaneously,” he said.

The port has already begun work on phase two of the project. The “enhanced modernization” project will see the two historic slipways filled in over the coming months.

Bell Estabrooks said once that work is completed by the spring of 2025, they will leap from a 325,000 TEU capacity to upwards of 800,000 TEUs.

In addition, the president and CEO said the port is actively working with its partners to see what smaller investments need to be made to keep the fluidity strong.

“Terminal capacity is great to state, but it really is based on the entire network. How well your rail is performing, how well your trucking is performing, all the inline KPIs that go towards how many containers you can handle successfully through a port,” he said”.

I'm pretty sure it's towing a oil barge and it's waiting for a spot to open in Courtney Bay

They come to pier 10 for weather. Light tug and barge uncomfortable in weather, they will tie up until cargo ready at Irving docks, which is where she is now.

I've got a question. Are the older cranes currently not operating? I've noticed that container ships are only going to Rodney North even though there is a second ship out at anchor.

The two south cranes are down a couple weeks for maintenance. They haven’t stopped since they got here so it’s time for some work.

I see all 4 cranes are at the north end of Rodney. I wonder if that means they are ready to go.

The MSC CANBERRA looks like it is making a previously unscheduled stop to pick up empties. There's a large (~13,000 ft) train coming down via CPKC today. Perhaps this train is bringing a load of empties for that ship.

What is length of typical train on that run?

CPKC does not haul MSC containers to and from the port so the empties must be one's that are sitting at the port.

The train that came from Montreal was not significantly larger than normal as far as intermodal traffic. It carried 112 containers total, as well as 61 empty wells. No MSC. The entire train was 180 cars which is a little larger than normal but not huge.

You're right. The empties are probably already sitting at the port.

The mechanics and electricians will put all 4 together for maintenance so they aren’t driving up and down the wharf all day, can just walk from crane to crane.

She will be dumping off 600 empties in Saint John, from New York.

Yup. Going from 1577 to 1740. Which is about 10% larger. That seems to be the way CMA works lately. Every once in awhile an extra 10%.
