PHILADELPHIA | CHOP New Patient Tower | 434 FT | 23 FLOORS

Title: CHOP New Patient Tower
Project: Medical/Clinical/Outpatient
Architect: ZGF & Ballinger
Developer: Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
Location: 515 Osler Circle, Philadelphia, PA
Neighborhood: University City
District: West Philadelphia
Floors: 23 floors
Height: 434 feet

Quote:
Although no address is specified for the University City tower, renderings appear to place it somewhere near at the intersection of Civic Center Boulevard and Osler Circle, apparently at the site of the Wood Pediatric Center at 3401 Civic Center Boulevard, a six-story, Postmodern structure. The building will stand 22 floors tall and come at a price tag of $1.9 billion, serving as a new patient center with 300 beds. All rooms in the tower will be single-patient units, something that CHOP will intends to implement in all of their hospitals.

The high-rise will stand near the CHOP Hub for Clinical Collaboration, a 19-story tower that is quickly rising into the skyline. The latest proposal will rise even more prominently above the surroundings, likely standing as the tallest building in the University City hospital cluster upon completion. This tower will also feature an all glass façade, with stylish curved corners giving the building a smooth look.

The University City tower has a planned completion date of 2027.

I remember hearing rumors few years back that there was plans to knock Wood down and rebuild. This looks to be the case.

The new inpatient tower will start with 300 beds, with the ability to expand to 500 beyond 2027.

Gregory_S, welcome to the forum, great pictures! CHOP is going gangbusters on building towers, and those pictures are actually of the "Hub for Clinical Collaboration" which can be found documented here: https://skyscraperpage.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=238715

Thanks for posting Gregory and welcome to the forum! I moved your photos to the thread for that tower. Templeguy posted the link to that thread. Hope you contribute more!

Since it's bumped, I'll just say there's a ton of prep work still being done in advance. They've been working on the underground garage and there's some scaffolding up at one of the skybridges at the Wood center. Demolition is still a ways off but there's still technically a lot of related work going on.

There's not much to look at, really. The building that is being replaced is still in use. There are just a lot of construction people around working on utilities and the underground existing parking garage. This tower likely won't start until their office tower is completed because they have to clear out the Wood building by making space to move those offices.

Looking forward to seeing finalized renderings for this one. I think this will be sharp and am kinda hoping in breaks that 400-foot threshold that the medical center hasn't breached yet.

CHOP plans nearly $3.5B in capital projects by 2028

Quote:
We have a lot happening here in our Philadelphia campus. We just are in the process of opening a building called the Hub for Clinical Collaboration. That is a 17-story building that's 560,000 square feet. We're also in the process of doing all the pre-work for a new patient tower, which is a 1.3 million square foot building that will open in 2028, and a new, 17-story research building next door to our Roberts Center for Clinical Pediatric Research. We're building a services and logistics center right outside of West Philadelphia. We're also building two inpatient behavioral health units and a new behavioral health outpatient center. We have a just under $3.5 billion building projects budget that will create lots of stimulation for the economy between now and 2028.

It's 475 feet above sea level. The first floor is 41 feet above sea level, so the structure is 434 feet tall.

Either way, still a substantial height for the medical center and very happy to have another building in UCity breaching the 400 foot mark.

In recent years, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has been in the process of expanding its University City campus via a $3.4 billion development plan, a major part of which is the $1.9 billion Inpatient Tower (aka New Patient Tower) proposed at 515 Osler Circle. Recently, a Philly YIMBY contributor has shared a pair of new renderings for the project. The Inpatient Tower was designed by Ballinger, with ZGF Architects (which has previously teamed up with CHOP to design its Medical Behavioral Unit) as the consultant and interiors/clinical architects. In addition, we present a separate drawing set consisting of a floor plan and building section, which reveal an updated structural height and a detailed building program. The schematics show that the tower will rise 434 feet and 23 stories tall and will span a total of 1.318 square feet, making for a significant addition to West Philadelphia’s already impressive medical sector.
