I had the opposite reaction. It's too busy for my liking. Whatever those weird looking windows are in the middle I could have done without them.

Imagine how sick this building would have been if Stern did something innovative like cladding it in un anodized aluminum panels instead of concrete. Imagine a building of this exact massing but entirely clad in silver instead of beige pukecast concrete. It would be entirely appropriate nfor echo deco too since deco designers loooovvveeed aluminum and would probably have used even more of it it weren't so damn expensive at the time.
PS, got Mr DTs Designing Modern America book for Christmas, it's glorious. The only complaint I have is that it is ironically printed in China, literally mocking the fact that China is now what Chicago was during the period this book focuses on.
In my humble opinion, even though different materials could have been used instead of the concrete, this building is still a cut above many of the newer glass box additions that tend to be built today. Wish the architect would have used more art deco touches to the building but then again.....that costs too much and hits the bottom line. Still a nice addition to the Streeterville area and also a nice addition to the overall Chicago skyline.

If we go by what we have seen the precast on Lagrange buildings have done it will fade/lighten. Although the coloring is pretty light here already so it might not be much.
To Kolchaks point, if it fades a little so the color temperature better matches the stone that would be ideal.

If anything, I'm just happy we've finally had a tower thoroughly punch through the 550 foot plateau of Streeterville for once. Now if only 400 LSD could do the same and that would be a nice cluster right over there. Add in a big tower at the lot next to Helmut Jahn's building and the NBC lots and you've got as good of a cluster as anywhere else in the city all of a sudden.

^ Exactly...never knew why there wasn't more 700ft plus buildings in streeterville...that areas residents are actually less opposed to height and more of a promoter
The materials are nice(ish) and it looks nice from a distance. I always liked the massing and I still do but up close I feel like they made some really bizarre decisions. That setback in Harrys last photo bothers me. It has no character. And the shape/placement of the windows is very incohesive throughout the whole building. It could be a lot worse I suppose. I actually really dig the base but overall I'm underwhelmed. This could have been stunning with a few minor tweaks.

For example looking at the west elevation, I would prefer the windows were more evenly spaced and a bit narrower. Also don't like the oddball columns of windows on the south elevation. Certain aspects of the design seem awkward and forced. They almost nailed it but they didn't. But that's just my opinion. If your opinion is that the design is perfect I'm happy for you.
