Instead of the ball dropping on NYE, people will be dropping here!

Definitely looks like something imagined for an alien city. Certainly bizarre for the NY skyline, but damned if its futuristic vibe kind of gets to me. In some ways it functions like an anti-spire. So many spires/pointy/skinny buildings in midtown of late. I sort of like the way this design shakes things up.

While I would have preferred a traditional building, I’m starting to think that this might turn out better than I (and virtually everyone) have feared.

Gary Barnett and Extell should make this development the central part of their Casino plan.. hotel, casino and Vegas style gimmicky observation deck.

Does Extell have a casino plan too?

8th Ave is too crappy for a high-end casino. It still needs A LOT of redevelopment.

Extell doesn’t need the headache. It’s a crazy and expensive process, and they would need a partner. The floorplates aren’t as large as even those at the proposed Ceasars just down the street.

This building, the proposed "Tower Fifth," and the proposed "Affirmation tower," clearly show that we have entered a period of design which celebrates excessive

costliness of construction and shock value above all else. Aesthetically, these add less and less in proportion to greater expense and have less appeal than a

cheap plastic PEZ dispenser.

Whoever designs and/or buys these sorts of clunks is clearly suffering from a state of arrested development at an adolescent level.

Affirmation has a strong and potentially iconic design. This thing is a crime against architecture.

No, it does not. But if I were to use your argument, you could use it against anything. Do we really need supertall buildings at all? Not really. Do we need megatalls? Hardly. But all of the towers you mentioned have a purpose, as does this one. It doesn't really need to be a thousand foot tower, but the point is tot get the observation deck - a proven moneymaker in New York. The hotel alone doesn't need to be that height.

All three of these buildings will at least have observation decks open to the public on their top floors. They are intended to compete with the Empire State Building, One Vanderbilt, One World Trade Center, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, and 30 Hudson Yards.

You're getting to the point where the majority of your posts are of the variety "my distaste for this thing is a sign of mental illness in other people." Just because you don't like something, even an idea, doesn't mean that other people are wrong. It just means that you can't stand anything that goes against your narrow mindset. Get a new take.
