HSR on any USA-Canada route would require much more efficient customs handling than currently exists. We will also need to get well beyond COVID, which has crushed cross-border travel.

Amtrak, VIA and Go railway might have to build a new Windsor Train Station to make the Chincago-Detroit-Toronto route work.

They could keep the existing station too but its not well placed for a seamless travel experience for the Amtrak route to Toronto (if it runs through Windsor to begin with).

There is no GO Train to Windsor, closest stop is in London.

Being able to take a train from a Corktown station in Detroit to a Corktown station in Toronto would be very interesting.

Heard this on the radio this morning -

Quote:
Detroit's People Mover plans reopening in April, offering free rides for 120 days
Michigan Radio | By Briana Rice
March 31, 2022

Detroit's People Mover is reopening after a two year closure due to the pandemic. Officials have not yet announced an exact opening date, but they said it should be sometime in April. The People Mover, which travels 2.9 miles around Downtown Detroit will be offering free rides for the first 120 days of service. It used to cost 75 cents for a one-way ride. For now, the train will offer limited service at nine stations. Officials said they have set up sanitizer stations, and trains will be cleaned multiple times a day.

In the proposed 2022 fiscal budget, the system is seeking $6.5 million, mostly for staffing and operations, officials said. In the coming years, officials want around $90 million dollars for new train cars, staffing, and infrastructure updates. They said the current train cars will need to be replaced in the next five years at a cost of around $60 million.

Expanding marine transportation was part of discussion when Wayne County Port Authority head meet with Finnish Delegates.

15 Finnish delegates just took a bus trip around Michigan — and felt very much at home

Neal Rubin, Detroit Free Press
Sun, May 22, 2022

Quote:
We have trees, water and factories, the theory went, while they have trees, water and raw materials for batteries, so everyone should get together to chat about things like mobility, smart shipping, forest bio-economy industries, and whether to snag a Slows brisket sandwich or perhaps go with a chicken-and-bacon Yardbird from the assortment set out for lunch.

When I met him at the glass-walled headquarters of the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority early Thursday, executive director Mark Schrupp said the travelers and hosts were at "the relationship-building stage."

….

These days, he said, he's interested in expanding marine transportation in Detroit, "because we know that's the greenest way to move vehicles and goods."

Specifically, he envisions using the river as a highway, with a fleet of boats smaller than a typical freighter zipping parts and pickups to destinations reached now by trains and trucks.

He's on the prowl for $2.2 million to pave the Detroit docks to accommodate cars, and $200,000 for a feasibility study for an agricultural port.

It's about time Oakland County puts a vote like this to the voters to end the opt-out that several communities in the county use. Hopefully it passes and maybe next year Wayne County can do the same thing.

Countywide transit millage moves closer to reality in Oakland County

Quote:
County commissioners are scheduled to decide at their Wednesday board meeting on whether to put a 10-year countywide transit millage on the Nov. 8 ballot. If the board moves the measure forward as expected, voters would choose whether or not to end a patchwork approach to public transportation in metro Detroit’s second most populous county.
It would mark a dramatic shift in the conversation that swirled around metro Detroit transit earlier this year when the Auburn Hills city council voted to pull that community out of the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation system, an effort later thwarted by a circuit court judge but which was seen as symbolic of the region's transit woes.

Northern Michigan passenger rail plan, from Ann Arbor to Traverse City, one step clos

This would actually be pretty awesome if this happened. A lot of people from Metro Detroit go to Traverse City for vacation.
Northern Michigan passenger rail plan, from Ann Arbor to Traverse City, one step closer to reality
Quote:
In July, Michigan state lawmakers, led by northern Michigan’s Senator Wayne Schmidt, included $1 million to advance the Northern Michigan passenger rail Phase II planning study in the State of Michigan’s 2023 Labor and Economic Opportunity budget.

Last week, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg announced that project partners will be awarded the remaining $1.3 million through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant program to advance the northern Michigan passenger rail Phase II planning study. RAISE is a competitive grant program that supports transportation projects all over the United States.

Mayor Pete approve a train up to his new home Traverse City? No word on if he’ll have a private carriage.

Hey, if that's what it takes to get train service to T.C., I'm all for it!

It will be interesting to what MDOT recommends. Personally, I would love to BRT running down the middle of Gratiot from Downtown to 8 Mile.
Quote:
The Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) study for M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) from Randolph Street to M-102 (8 Mile Road) in Detroit will identify and evaluate safety, multimodal mobility, transit needs, and proposed improvements. The PEL study will help to refine the recommendations of existing plans and studies to create one unified vision for the corridor.
The Gratiot Avenue PEL study will also evaluate:
  • Safety issues for nonmotorized users
  • Abundance of travel lanes
  • Lack of nonmotorized facilities
  • High transit use
  • Sidewalk lighting and maintenance
A proposed road diet with dedicated center transit lanes and medians
The PEL study will consider environmental, community, and economic goals early in the transportation planning process. The information analysis and services or recommendations developed during the PEL study will inform the environmental review process.

I hope this trend continues...
QLine ridership up as streetcar works to improve service

Quote:
The QLine, operated by nonprofit M-1 Rail, reopened late September 2021 after closing in March 2020. Average daily ridership was 969 last October through January. It increased to 1,522 riders a day in February-May and June-September was at an average of 2,285 riders per day, according to M-1 Rail's annual report. In 2019, the QLine delivered about 3,000 trips a day, Crain's previously reported.

Its most recent documented economic impact was $8.1 billion from renovations, expansions, retail, restaurants and more across Woodward and beyond, communications officer Dan Lijana told Crain's.

The 12-stop battery-operated streetcar service travels 3.3 miles each way on Woodward Avenue from Congress Street north to West Grand Boulevard, passing through Downtown, Midtown, the North End and New Center. The first stop is a 7-minute walk from the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, and the last is a 5-minute walk from the Fisher Building. Current hours of operation are 8 a.m.-midnight Monday-Saturday and 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday.

There were transit millages on the ballot in the big three counties of Metro Detroit and they all passed. Also, Oaklan voters ended the silly opt-out option that some Oakland County communities used to stop bus service in their community. Now Detroit can truly start building toward a true regional transit system.

Oakland County transit millage passes, ending SMART bus opt-outs

Quote:
In Oakland County, a roll of the dice on whether voters writ-large would support funding public transit countywide paid off. With about 94 percentof precincts reporting unofficial results, voters approved the first such countywide millage. As of 2:14 a.m. Wednesday, the measure had 57 percent yes votes to 43 percent opposed.

In Macomb County, with 96 percent of precincts fully reporting as of about 5:14 a.m. Wednesday, 65 percent supported a public transportation millage, while 35 percent opposed it. Around the same time in Wayne County, 70 percent of voters supported the transit millage while 30 percent voted against it, with 94 percent of the vote tallied.

In Oakland County, voters green-lit a 10-year, 0.95-mill property tax for public transportation to fund Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation services while expanding and subsidizing other smaller transit agencies in the county.

Icelandair announced today they will be launching seasonal flights to Iceland starting in 2023. A nice pickup for Detroit Metro Airport imo.
