In general it does seem over the past 20+ years, as private university tuition has escalated beyond $50,000 a year, that a big tranche of students who used to go to private colleges pick a flagship state university somewhere instead. Of course, out-of-state tuition is getting up there too (some states are in the $30K-$40K range), but it's still a big savings over a private school if you don't get financial aid.

Most flagship state universities are deals, but not Michigan. Out-of-state tuition is almost the same as Harvard.

It seems that sports fans from every city/college other than one’s own are annoying. Seems par for the course.

However, there is a palpable trashy hillbilly quality that the Steelers fans possess.

I think I just root for them to lose so as to spare everyone the oxygen suck and constant Steelers conversation. There's so much more interesting stuff happening in town and other things to spend time on, I relish it when they have a bad year (this season has been LOVELY).

I feel like the Twin Cities are often under the radar on this front. Highly educated, lots of cultural opportunities, a Big 10 instituion, and some smaller liberal arts colleges (Macalaster, St. Thomas, Hamline, and others). Still reasonable COL.

But it's usually the fanbases from the more successful teams that get the most ire because many of those fans tend to get pretty high on themselves from the success of the teams the root for

I mean, I'm sure there are some annoyingly obnoxious Lions fans out there, but in general, that group isn't collectively hated like Patriots nation or Steelers nation are.

excuse me ... it's THE ohio state university.

i was in a grad school program in ky briefly when osu added the THE in the 80s and even though i didn't go there (well at the time, actually i did take some osu grad courses much later), but just being from ohio i was roundly and rightfully mocked ... by people in KENTUCKY!

Raiders Nation is pretty intense. Now have lots of rowdy fans in 3 cities: Las Vegas, Oakland, L.A. The flights from L.A. and Oakland to Las Vegas are often booked up on game days.

Baltimore, Philly, New Orleans, and New Haven are on this list. I previously mentioned Bridgeport. New Haven likely has more cultural offerings than Bridgeport but it is another 25 minute by Metro North from NYC and I think housing is more expensive.

I would absolute have said Tempe AZ up to 5 years ago. But it's not so much anymore. Not outrageously expensive but no longer "low" cost of living.
