the eastern end of Restoration Hardware, which had been left in its (ahem) pre-restoration state longer than the rest of the building, has now also been completed

sidewalk finally coming along on 20th (though not on Illinois, where it looks like they've temporarily gone backward a bit, pulling out some of the forms they had placed earlier. not in pic)

with its rear addition, which now sports a metal upper portion

Restoration Hardware building, in relation to newly-opened Crane Cove Park

and as seen from the latter, showing the status of the addition to the back:

Nicely detailed classical architecture.

20th St turned out quite nice I think

even the little sidewalk section on Illinois looks like it's getting high-quality base for the fencing

and here the work at the back of the Restoration Hardware building continues

the back of Restoration Hardware, progressing...

and a few more shots of 20th St. it's not too visible in these shots, but the sidewalk on the south side has gotten a little landscaping.

looking west toward Illinois St. one other thing of note is that, originally, the south (left) sidewalk dropped steeply, to below the level of the roadway, beginning about at the corner of the building on the left, so that it ran parallel to the ground floor. they have now split it (note the fence), raising the section closest to the street up to street-level for ease of movement.

there is a fence on the east end closing off the area beyond, but the street makeover does continue at least some ways into that area:

a little sidestreet still awaiting its final treatment. 'Union Iron Works' still painted on the restored building across 20th St here

I was looking back through the main run-down thread, and back in late 2018, I think, there was an article quoted that said four buildings were getting underway at Pier 70, kind of fast-tracked. I don't think it was referring to the buildings here, my impression was it meant new construction. anyone know if that just evaporated, or if I just misinterpreted? it's kind of hard to see what's going on down there.

actually, that's not quite right: looking at this old pic from 2012, I am reminded that the building was pretty much fenced off on that side, and there was no sidewalk to speak of. the sloping sidewalk I was mentioning was a fairly recent - ultimately interim - addition, probably from when the building was renovated a few years ago.

from the same 2012 pic above, I think we can see that some of the buildings there have been demolished as well

that entranceway (below where it says 'IRON WORKS') in 2013 before the building renovation:

I had already completely forgotten there used to be a charming little annex building on the north side of the Restoration Hardware Building (at the end of the sidewalk). it was still there in June 2011...

in context

and looking back up Illinois from further north. (and yes, that fueling station is also gone. as is the top of the crane on the left, at least for now)

the iron fence is going up around the Restoration Hardware building

a curious feature of this building is the trench that lines the Illinois St side (I forget if it continues through on the 20th St side)

this is what it looked like before the restoration

It looks like it there to let light into the bottom windows.

yes, that must be right. looking again at some other shots, it does look like the trench continues through around the corner, and due to the slope of the street on that side, the 'buried' storey just about reaches sidewalk level by the time you get to the far end of the building.

RH is an over the top design store for the ultra wealthy. Hopefully they make that moat into a really nice outdoor garden, complete with faux roman busts and plenty of topiary.

Of course. City Hall has the same kind of thing as do many buildings. Seems to me maybe the old Federal Building on McAllister does too.

a metal structure has now been erected over the trench near the corner, where the concrete base can be seen in the pic above. not sure what that is

the trench on the 20th St side

they're still working on the eastern end of the building

spiffied-up 20th St is still looking good...

... and was open a little further down at its far end than the last time I was there

beyond the current fencing the street doesn't get the fancy cobbles of the accessible portion, but still looks much more civilized than what had been there

from the same spot, looking out toward the Power Plant project site next door

looking back west up 20th

this little side-street off to the north...

... now leads to the extension of 19th St through the Crane Cove Park site

Restoration Hardware from the new street

looking back down the extension from near its intersection with Illinois St

the intersection itself, almost done

speaking of which, I know these things are often symbolic, but this seems huge to me

Construction has officially started on the Potrero Power Station development in Dogpatch, San Francisco, following yesterday’s groundbreaking ceremony. With Mayor London Breed in attendance, the event marks the beginning of a 29-acre redevelopment that will open up a portion of the city’s eastern waterfront to the public with 5.3 million square feet of offices, housing, and retail around public parks and transit featuring designs by Foster + Partners and Herzog & de Meuron.

I love this:

maybe time that project gets its own thread

I don't know much about it but remember it has to be 120 ft or more to get a thread in the various "highrise" sections under forum rules. I do see one tall building in the rendering but don't know if it's part of the project. If not, it could get a thread in the "General Development" section. You could give it one.
