YAM + Carl Joe Williams Gentilly Resilience District Sculptures
Join the Arts Council, City of New Orleans, Water Leaders Institute, Resilient NOLA, New Orleans Redevelopment Authority (NORA), Levees.org, and The NET: Gentilly on Sunday, November 7, from 3:30 – 5:30 pm, for the unveiling of Unity and Harmony, two new sculptures located at the London Avenue Canal Levee Breach Site (5000 Warrington Dr.) and the NORA Rain Garden (corner of Filmore Ave. and Wildair Dr.).
The artwork was created by students from the Arts Council's YAM program at The NET: Gentilly, under the mentorship of local artist Carl Joe Williams, for the City of New Orleans Gentilly Resilience District. We'll meet at the levee breach site first and walk over to the rain garden to see the artwork.
YAM is the Arts Council’s arts education and workforce development program that beautifies neighborhoods and connects youth to their communities through the research, design, and installation of public art. The $141 million HUD-funded Gentilly Resilience District (GRD) is a combination of efforts across the Gentilly neighborhood that are designed to reduce flood risk, slow land subsidence, improve energy reliability, and encourage neighborhood revitalization. To learn more, visit: www.nola.gov/resilience.

The event is free and open to the public and will include refreshments. Visit https://www.facebook.com/events/949395888985856 to RSVP for free.

Really loving the design of 1335 Magazine. That will be a great addition to the block and complement the Stables across the street well.

El Guapo to Build Bitters Brewery at 3300 Gravier Street

A 2021 graduate of the Idea Village VillageX accelerator program, Cotton plans to expand the brand’s distribution to more states, including Georgia and Tennessee. She said the company has doubled its workforce since the onset of COVID and will make additional hires in 2022. The brand is distributed in Louisiana by Uncorked, also based in New Orleans.

Big Easy Bucha Purchased by Latin American Bev-Tech Company

the acquisition means the company will expand its local operations, retaining 47 employees and creating 50 new direct jobs locally. Louisiana Economic Development estimates the project will result in 119 indirect jobs across Louisiana’s southeast region. The company aspires to fill many of the new job openings with candidates from local job readiness programs.

Farouki Farouki is really knocking it out of the park with their recent designs. They have definitely moved up to one of my favorite local firms.

I completely agree and the scale of the building seems perfect for the area. Additional low-mid rise projects would be welcome in some of these infill areas.

My guess is it was a victim of covid. They were probably allowed to release after project canceled. Never saw anything else other than a rendering from instagram . So proposal that never got off drawing board. Still was a beautiful look

Few status update questions if anyone knows:

1. What is currently underway at Charity/what stage are they at? I drive past it every day on the interstate and now that the Dome looks all clean, it really highlights how desperately Charity needs to be pressure washed/painted at a minimum.

2. Is the new Warwick Tulane apartments open? Did anything commercial announce a presence?

3. Any word of any parcels on Tulane Ave being nabbed, particularly the big plot of land right next to where the hospitals end (Banks/Tulane/S Galvez)?

4. Is Morrows building a new building on St Claude and abandoning the current one?

5. I really hope we get an announcement soon--since the year is winding down--on the final South Market property.

Since I Live Across the street can tell you i saw guys out there with plans earlier last week. The buildings across tulane from chairty have lights on in them now and thats supposed to be the offices for construction during the rehab of the building.

2. Is the new Warwick Tulane apartments open? Did anything commercial announce a presence? They are scheduled to open this fall(by end of year and the ground floor is a coffee lunch place and a small convenience market.

3. Any word of any parcels on Tulane Ave being nabbed, particularly the big plot of land right next to where the hospitals end (Banks/Tulane/S Galvez)?
None that I know of

4. Is Morrows building a new building on St Claude and abandoning the current one? Not sure but I would think so.

5. I really hope we get an announcement soon--since the year is winding down--on the final South Market property. Would think something by the end of the year, but things are still settling down, so if you dont hear something by Thanksgiving id expect 1st quarter next year.

CITY INVESTS $8 MILLION TO EXPAND LOW BARRIER SHELTER AND TO RELOCATE OZANAM INN
NEW ORLEANS — Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced today that the City has invested approximately $8 million to expand programs that support the eradication of homelessness in New Orleans. The City has allocated more than $3 million for the acquisition for the new home of Ozanam Inn and $5 million to expand the Low Barrier Shelter, which opened in 2018 and will include an additional 246 new beds.

“The City of New Orleans will continue to operate strategically, utilizing funding from the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to invest in programs that support our residents most in need,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “We are creating long-term solutions to invest in the eradication of homelessness by relocating Ozanam Inn to a much larger facility, and extending bed capacity and services to reach women in need of a temporary housing solution. We are also increasing bed capacity to the already-full Low Barrier Shelter to continue to meet our people where they are.”

The Ozanam Inn’s new property is located at 2239 Poydras St. in the Central Business District, previously located on Camp Street. The new location is a much larger facility and presents an opportunity to expand the services provided. It will also extend sheltering opportunities and expanded services to women in need of assistance. The Inn can accommodate up to 55 women on the second floor of the facility and includes dedicated dental and medical rooms for the residents and other homeless individuals living in the surrounding area. Ozanam Inn has provided meals to the homeless population and sleeping accommodations to homeless men since 1955.

Mayor Cantrell prioritized phase II of the expansion project to increase the bed count at the Low Barrier Shelter due to the overwhelming need and ability to reach capacity within the first few weeks of its opening. The shelter initially housed 100 beds and will include a total of 346 beds within the next couple of weeks.

“The goal is to transition folks from homelessness to permanent housing, and to match each person with the supportive services and the life skills needed for long-term housing stability,” said Marjorianna Willman, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Housing Policy and Community Development.

The Low Barrier Shelter is located in a portion of the 2nd and 3rd floors of the old Veteran Administration Hospital building. The facility provides meals, supportive services and sleeping accommodations for both women and men. As a part of its programming, the City coordinates with outreach workers to identify unsheltered homeless individuals that are the most vulnerable and have been unhoused the longest. Federal funding has been allocated through the Mayor’s Office of Housing Policy and Community Development to assist in locating permanent housing for homeless individuals.
