Harry's

I use to eat at Harry's often about 20 years ago. He didn't trust any of his employees. He always ran the register, no one was allowed to touch it. the other character on that block was Perry and Perry's deli. One of the best delis in the city. It still exists but it's a shadow of what it once was, it shares space with the Bacci pizza along Franklin on that same block.

I started working at 333 W Wacker in late 2000, I remember walking past the old Merc building as they were tearing it down, not aware of what is was. Never ventured inside, wish I had.

Less than a month until this building's zoning expires. A whole decade and still no broken ground. Say your farewell's to this thread while you have a chance

Approaching two decades since the old Chicago Mercantile Exchange Building was torn down... for what? A vacant lot.

It should be illegal to tear something down in this city if you dont have a concentrated plan on what to do next with it. So many demolitions in this city which just end up vacants lots for years, pathetic.

A lot of the demos in the city are actually due to something being neglected so much that it becomes a danger to still have the structure standing. Most demos in the city are really on the south and west sides as well.

^^ Yea, it could be good news that the zoning expires? We don't know who will get control of the site (if anyone new) but this would be a great spot for a new supertall office tower (or any type but office seems more appropriate in this area).

Maybe Google's move to the loop could be a good omen and cause other major companies to follow.

no way a supertall gets built there, that area is basically the south loop. Supertalls right on the river/lake can't get off, then this cant.

The deadline is actually September 24. So keep an eye on the site everyone (sarcasm)

Quote:
Based on those problems, the city has pushed deadline to get started on this project out to September 24, 2022.
Oh god, I didn't realize they had 6 (now 7) years. During that time over 6 million square ft of Class A space (CNA, Riverside, River Point, 110 Wacker, Salesforce) was built within a 3 min walk from this location.

Quote:
130’s six-year clock was going to run out on September 24th of this year,
IMO this would be a great site for a mixed use building with a hotel given all the new office space nearby for business travelers, and the proximity to the riverwalk for tourists.

And Chase said they want up to 1 million sqft. And Chicago recently gave Tishman until September, 24 2022 to start getting something built here or 'force it back to square one.' (https://www.chicagoarchitecture.org/...-blames-covid/)

Edit: Did a bit of searching and Tribune says Tishman is one 'making pitches' to Chase but not really sure the source or context on that.

I had a dream the other night that I was a multi billionaire developer and that I purchased this parcel and the parking lot next to it. Then I hired Jeanne Gang to design a supertall office tower for my corporation. I told her I wanted it to be inspired by the design for One Vanderbilt in NYC, for the lobby/atrium to be open and at least 100 feet tall (think of Oscorp lobby from The Amazing Spider-Man 1), a winter garden that is 100 feet tall somewhere around middle to top of the building, and for the building to be 1800 to 2000 feet tall. Jeanne told me she was up for the challenge and told me she would create a beautiful and functional supertall that would complement the Sears Tower.
