So. .um. .the writing is saying the site of the Bellevue Terrace was the location of the first Normal School annnd when this information was written
it was currently the site of the Jonathan Club?

Don't know if you can make out the scrawl, but it says "See Newmark pg. 532 & 559" referring to Harris Newmark's Sixty Years in Southern California. A bit on the Normal School, but not the Jonathan Club.

The caption accompanying this photo talks about renaming Pearl St. and Bellevue Terrace to Figueroa and Sixth. I think these houses are beside the ones in your photo.(Sorry, no pics. I'm writing this on a phone.)

Police break up an attempted march on City Hall by the unemployed, Jan. 1930.....the demonstration was inspired by the International Communist Party, hence the papers dubbed the protest "Red Riots".

L.A. Bargain House hardware shows at 154 S. Main St.






Dobson & Co. was at 151 S. Main, they were dealers in second-hand clothing.

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out where these 1914 movie scenes were filmed. The location appears to be a large house with a garden featuring urns (a particularly large urn, almost human-sized, can be seen in photo 1 at the far left).

This house has a room that overlooks the garden and stairs that descend to it (second picture below).

Any ideas? I've been looking at pix of houses that were around then but haven't come across anything definitive.

Where have all the hats and caps gone? It is said when JFK rarely wore a hat, that was when the decline started. But my recall is that by the 1950s, fewer men wore them except when going to work, when hats were expected on office workers arriving as much as ties. Hats on women also began to decline about the same time. The helmet like cloche hat worn by the woman in the foreground was on the way out as 1929 ended, replaced mostly by smaller beret-like hats. By the late 1930s and 1940s, larger and more flamboyant hats made a return on women, some oddly shaped like upside down shoes, etc. and often sporting flowers and fruit, perhaps inspired by popular Brazilian star of the time Carmen Miranda. The type of cap worn by some of the men in the photo also declined and were rarely seen by the 1940s. Baseball type caps began to gain in street wear in the 1940s and 1950s among kids and working men. Baseball caps were often worn by military men in WW2 at work in the hot South Pacific or southern Europe or North Africa outside of battle. The bill kept the sun out of the eyes, and the rim caught the sweat.

I don't have an answer to that, but I was looking at the youtube link. I'm not sure I've ever heard of The Oz Film Company. Nor that L. Frank Baum wrote and directed any film versions of his stories! At least this noted one, His Majesty the Scarecrow of Oz (1914).

A little searching finds a few interesting things. This link, HERE, has some info about this company:

Oz Film Company: Founded in 1914, this company, also known as The Oz Film Manufacturing Company, produced silent films based off L. Frank Baum's books, most notably the Oz series. Every single one of them bombed commercially. The movies they made had various colors and custom themes playing over it, like silent films traditionally do.

In 1915, this company would be absorbed into Metro Pictures (now Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer). Only four of their films are known to survive: The Patchwork Girl of Oz, His Majesty the Scarecrow of Oz, The Magic Cloak of Oz and The Last Egyptian, the last of which is only partially found.

The Wikipedia page, HERE, has further information, including:

The studio was located on Santa Monica Boulevard between Gower Street and Lodi Street. The facility would later be used by Famous Players-Lasky (now called Paramount Pictures) and National Film Corporation of America. It was considered state-of-the-art at the time. It was used almost exclusively for interior shots. Exterior shots were done outdoors rather than simulated in the studio. In some scenes, it is evident that some 'interior' scenes were also filmed outdoors.

In the "Decline" section it's noted: The studio was rented out to others, and was eventually demolished.

In the "Stock Company" section there's a discrepancy. It says, J. Farrell MacDonald directed all of the film productions and acted in some of them. L. Frank Baum wrote all the scripts, however, in the youtube link to the film in question this one has the credit: Written and Directed by L. Frank Baum.

At this link, HERE, some Moving Picture World advertisements, show the address of The Oz Film Manufacturing Company written as: Studio and Laboratories, Santa Monica Blvd., Gower to Lodi Sts., Los Angeles, Cal.

MYSTERY BUILDINGS


Anyone recognize these buildings? The first is of a house I am certain we've seen before on NLA, I think I even posted it...some muckety-muck built it out, I think, in Culver City. Just can't remember the m-m's name or the context.

The huge white Colonial building--seems too big to be a residence--I'm thinking may also be in Culver City. Of course I thought of the similar Ince/Selznick studios building, but it's not that....

On the north side of the street there is this cheaply built piece of shit apartment building.

The first appears to be the Ferdinand Bain Mansion, now part of the Notre Dame Academy on Overland Avenue.

GW, is this the same Ferdinand Randall Bain that you wrote about in your blog post on 3101 Wilshire Boulevard?
