Almost seems like rebar overkill on the mat. I can't imagine the older buildings from the 20's to the 70's would have done that much over engineering. Correct me on why that much rebar is needed on a non load bearing mat when the caissons will be carrying the load of the building itself.

BTW the caisson rebar is massively thick. What size is it, i'm thinking #18 on the inside #14 on the parameter. The ones in the center of the caissons look thicker to me in this picture below than the ones on the parameter. Or are they the same size and its just an optical illusion.

Also does anyone know where it is sourced from for this project?

Thanks Harry.

BTW got it Kent. Didn't have time to Google about the mat but what you said makes total sense.

I did find more general info on rebar in the meantime.

4) 93% of the rebar consumed by the U.S. is made in the U.S. In 2012 we imported roughly 1 million tons of rebar; 64% of it came from Turkey and 30.3% from Mexico...

5) Rebar used to be made from new material but starting in the 1960s it began to be made from scrap. Nowadays, domestically produced rebar contains 97% recycled material—from old cars, appliances, hot water heaters, and the like.

8) The cost to transport rebar is high in relation to its value so U.S. companies produce it as close as possible to where it will be sold. Rebar is produced in 30 U.S. states and most is sold within 250 miles of where it was made.

^^^ bnk that's one of your most interesting posts, thanks for that tidbit. I've always wondered where the Mills are for that stuff and also fascinating that it's mostly scrap.

Make sure you recycle your trash, it might become a skyscraper!

Steel is what keeps the suburban scrappers in business. When I moved in April, I cleaned out my garage of what felt like a ton of old steel junk I'd accumulated. It sat on the curb for about 30 minutes.

I remember leaving out an old broken foot pedal metal garbage can out in the alley. As I went back in to grab a bag of trash, on my way back to the alley there was already a junk truck picking it up. Man they move swift!

Double checking - note the couplings on some of the bar.

Since I first saw the initial drawings of this building I have been very excited to see how this building eventually will look on Wacker. The set backs from the drawings along with what I viewed as more a thinner sleek tower make this building unique and very attractive. My only question is, have the drawings recently (I know there are many revisions it seems) make the building look thicker? Maybe I need more coffee.

Reminds me of how the Big Hurt used to swing a heavy piece of steel to get his bat speed up back in the day.

It’s hard to believe that yet another big tower is underway. The Lake, Riverside, Wacker trio are gonna look impressive from the Kennedy. And then there’s WP to crown it all.

That's going to be a beefy concrete mat.

Call me crazy, but I recall that Chicago skyscrapers need to be earthquake proof to a certain magnitude, due to the New Madrid fault and the Wabash Valley seismic zone located in Missouri and downstate Illinois, respectively. Any truth to that? And if so, would it be a not insignificant contributor to all the rebar and concrete that this slab requires?

So essentially they poured a thin slab of concrete to set the mat rebar on to then pour the mat?
