Nightsky’s trip from Zagreb to Rijeka, Opatija, Ljubljana, Venice, Trieste, Postojna

This was the first trip I made after the pandemic started. Having stayed at home for 2,5 years and taking the second dose of the vaccine it was finally possible to travel again!
The first idea of trips to Bucharest was cancelled because of extreme heat, another idea was Munich but it has been raining constantly this summer so had to find something else and found that Ryanair had cheap flights to Zagreb from Malmö. And what was only meant as a trip to Zagreb with one daytrip or two turned out to be an extensive journey, 9 places in just 7 days, that required lots of planning! The journey started in Zagreb and ended in Zagreb so let’s start with the capital and largest city of Croatia, a city with much to offer! I will post links to every page as soon as I make them, the pictures and all info are there:

ZAGREB SKYLINE:

TRAVEL ITINERARY:

CROATIA: Zagreb, Rijeka, Opatija, Plitvice Lakes
SLOVENIA: Ljubljana, Postojna Caves, Predjama Castle
ITALY: Venice, Trieste

Small World!!- my first international Covid trip was to Croatia - Zagreb for 36 hours, car to Split with side trip to Plitvice, 4.5 days in Split with a day trip to Mostar, Bosnia, then onto our boat for a 7 day trip - Brac then Vis then Hvar then Lastovo the Korcula then Mljet, then Dubrovnik.

Wonderful trip. Croatia is just amazing. Landscape and esp. the Dalmatian coast are stunning, the villages, towns and cities lovely, the food was delicious and the wines were so so good.

Zagreb really is a cool town, isn't it?

Thanks a lot! I always ask from a room on the top floor when I book hotel. In the other places we stayed at more simple accomondations, such as apartments and hostels.

Seems like a cool trip, never went to the South part, that will be another journey with Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar etc! but went to Italy (Venice and Trieste) and Slovenia (Ljubljana and Postojna). Yes, Zagreb is such a cool city, it has both the historical streets with lanes and churches, and modern boulevards, with tall highrises, and a nice skyline. It is also nice that it is surrounded by mountains. And it just have tons of museums, most of them were clsoed after the earthquake, and problably also becuase of covid, but the weather was great so I still think the three museums we visited were enough. The only thing I miss is water, except for the Sava River, that is really in the outskirts, there is not much water lake canals or lakes.
I would prefer to live in the old part, or the central parts of Lower Town.

ZAGREB - St Mark's Square, Lotrščak Tower, Strossmayer Promenade, Stone Gate
- Strossmayer Promenade Stone Gate, St Mark's Church, Croatian Museum of Naive Art, Croatian Parliament, Banski dvori, Radiceva ulica, Co-cathedral of Saints Cyril and Methodius:

ZAGREB - Ban Jelačić Square, Dolac Market
-Trams, Jelacic Statue, Market stalls, White clock, Nama department store

Ban Jelačić Square (Trg bana Jelačića) is the main square and heart of Zagreb, situated in Lower town, just on the stairs to Upper Town. Here people meet under the white clock.

After Zagreb we took the bus to Rijeka, were we spent half a day before going to nearby Opatija and back to Rijeka in the evening. The day after we travelled ot Venice but that I will show later.

RIJEKA:

Population: 128 000 (metro 245 000)
Country: Croatia
Other names: Fiume
Tallest building: Franje Candecka 23a (103m, 28 floors, built 1977)
District: Primorje-Gorski Kotar County
Founded year: 150AD as Tharsatica, rebuilt in the 7th century as Rika svetoga Vida
Area: 44 km² (city)
Year visited: September 2021

Rijeka, or Fiume in Italian, the name means “river” in all languages, is the 3rd largest city in Croatia (after Zagreb and Split). River Rječina flows through the city. It is situated along the Adriatic Sea, overlooking the Kvarner Bay, and is an important industrial port city, but still has a touristy cosmopolitan feeling, surrounded by green mountains. Rijeka has an interesting history, changing rulers and demographics between Croatia, Italy and Hungary. In 1921 Rijeka was a free state, Fiume-Rijeka, and in 1924 the city was under Italian rule (and surrounding villages Yugoslavian), for some years.
