Yes, people really do live in them.

I see the topics have been well covered already. But yes, many students are from asia. Live in their parents homes (which become rentals once uni is done) and drive their parents brand new vehicles. They'll straight up tell you if you ask.

The others live in apartments paid for by family. If international students can afford the high tuition, they can afford a 500 sq ft apartment. Also, sometimes there will be multiple people living in small spaces, which is fairly normal for people from asia.

They have started driving piles this week. Can the status be changed to U/C?

On the plus side i think those apartments look quite nice. They would look better downtown, of course....

Yeah, like River/Stradbrook or Assiniboine Aves.

I just drove by the site to take a look. Although it does look like they may begin construction soon, I believe it is not under construction yet. It looked like they were doing test piles. In 2 very distant parts of the property they have driven 3 different pile types in a row about 10 ft apart. 2 were different diameter caissons and the other was a steel i-beam.

Not pretty... a downgrade from the initial renderings.

I find the wall pattern and window placement more creative than the designs shown in the render

I think these types of pixelated patterns just look really cheap... it's the sort of thing I'd expect to see on a small, low-budget apartment building, not a fairly prominent midrise.

It’s a trick to make an otherwise boring/cheap design look a bit more interesting. Sometimes it works (Downtown Commons), often it doesn’t (take your pick of OV condo).

If you're playing Tetris, that's a great shape to see float down the screen, but as a fixed living address, I'm less certain.

I’m glad those are in South Winnipeg and not anywhere downtown cause those are not very appealing , still good density but definitely not “THE BOLD DESIGN “ and prominent architecture welcoming people into South Winnipeg like the developers previously stated .

Got to beat the abandoned car dealership/empty lot that has sat there for 10-15 years.

Yeah, that part is nice... the laneway in front of the lobby looks considerably nicer on the rendering than the towers themselves.

It's really unfortunate U of M doesn't have their shit together when it comes to developing the Southwood lands. All these new projects going up on Pembina would be much better off going on university lands, closer to the campus, and creating a proper commercial centre on campus (close to Stadium Station). While all these projects are good for the area, it sucks that they're still quite a brutal walk away from campus in winter. Even in summer it's like a dusty wind tunnel.

I actually think this thing looks appropriate for the location. Its creating density in the suburbs. I wouldn't be happy if it was in a core neighborhood but this is ok.

No one will be walking from this place to the campus. It's too far. But yes, it does feel like the U of M has snoozed and lost with regard to the Southwood lands... with the huge downturn resulting from Covid I'm going to say it'll probably be a decade before we see enough of a rebound to result in development on that land.
