Autumn in the Mid-Atlantic & Southern New England: NYC, NJ, & CT

After spending 5 nights in the DC area (see photos here), I took Amtrak up to NY for 6 nights, from November 1 – 7. Despite the fact it was now early November, it was very warm with highs of around 75F-80F (approx. 24F-27C) over the last several days. I’m glad I packed some shorts & t-shirts! Anyway, these photos include not just NYC, but also a day trip on Thursday, November 3rd, on Metro North to New Haven, CT, as well as most of Friday, November 4th, spent across the Hudson in Hoboken, NJ. Going back through my photos I realized I have very little from the Upper East and Upper West Sides, as well as Midtown down through Chelsea, even though I spent a fair amount of time in those areas and like them very much (though I don’t love Midtown West). Most of my photos are from the smaller-scale areas, like Brooklyn Heights, Greenwich Village & the East Village, Hoboken, and New Haven.

12. And the view to the west towards Hudson Yards.

13. I saw a couple shows while visiting, including Funny Girl.

46. Arriving in New Haven at the State Street station adjacent to downtown.

47. Downtown New Haven.

48. East Rock area.

52. Must have famous New Haven pizza when in New Haven. I stopped by the two most popular. First up, Modern Apizza for lunch. I order their famous white clam pizza. I thought the pizza was delicious, though in any future visits I’d likely stick with my preferred toppings of simply pepperoni and/or sausage. But I’m glad I tried the clam.

53. Continuing through the East Rock area in the general direction of the Yale campus.

54.

55. If I’d had more time (daylight is short by early November), I would have liked to head up the escarpment to check out the views.

56. Prospect Hill Historic District

57.

59. Yale University – I’ve been curious to check out this campus for quite some time. Having now done so, I think I like it more than Harvard’s campus.

87. Light is fading fast, so time to catch a Metro North train back to Manhattan. I will say I was a little disappointed with the quality of the ride on Metro North. I thought it was bumpy. Not sure if it was the train or the tracks (with perhaps lots of junctions?) or both. Meanwhile my ride on NJ Transit from Penn Station to Newark was extremely smooth. It felt like we were gliding along the rails, as it should feel, as opposed to my experience on Metro North which certainly didn’t feel like a nice smooth glide (it was clanky & somewhat jerky-feeling).

88. Friday morning I headed to the PATH train to explore Hoboken.

127. Times Square

128. Saturday morning I decided to stop by Sawada Coffee, which happens to be my favorite coffee shop in Chicago. They somewhat recently opened up this shop in NY, adjacent to a very beautiful/seemingly popular restaurant where people were arriving before it had even opened to get a table.

129. Battery Park – sunshine & 70s, wow it was nice!

139. Heading up to Greenwich Village.

140.

141. La Cabra – exceedingly good pastries and coffee. Certainly worth the hype.

142. Greenwich Village

143.

144. Pommes Frites – I can’t help myself… I usually stop here when in the Village to order poutine. A very healthy lunch for me, ha!

145. Washington Square Park – a mix of sun & clouds with temps in the mid 70s and beautiful fall colors. Such a perfect afternoon!

158. Checking out the NYC Marathon where the runners have just crossed the East River from Queens into Manhattan.

159. And now into Central Park to the mile 25 marker to cheer on the runners.

160. Pulitzer Fountain near the southeast corner of Central Park.

161. Heading north through the Upper West Side.

162.

163.

164. Up to Columbia University.

165.

166. A friend who attend Columbia back in the late 80s/early 90s, used to like this Italian place, so I stopped by for lunch.

167. He recommended The Hungarian Pastry Shop too, which had a line out the door.

168. Morningside Park

169. Heading south down Amsterdam Ave. The bars and restaurants along the street were all filled with runners who had just finished the NYC Marathon two blocks to the east and were now out ready to drink & party to celebrate their accomplishments. Such a lively scene! I should have taken more photos but this is all I snapped along the way.

170. Monday morning, my final morning before leaving that afternoon. I stopped by Yanni’s Coffee in Chelsea and it was very good, as was the still warm freshly baked white chocolate oatmeal cookie. I was a happy customer. This place wasn’t on my radar but it is now! I’ll definitely visit again whenever I’m next in NYC.

171. Views from Hudson River Park.

172.

174.

175.

176.

177. The bikeway looked idyllic with the fall foliage enveloping the path.

179. West Village

180.

181.

182.

183. Abingdon Square

184. Meatpacking District

185. More from the West Village.

186.

187.

188. Can’t just have New Haven pizza on this trip, must also have some classic NY pizza, of which Joe’s is among the best!

189. Time to head back up to Midtown to leave for the airport.

190.

191. Arriving at Newark International Airport.

192. Goodbye NY!

Always a little sad to leave New York, but I had a great time exploring not just the city, but also venturing beyond to both Hoboken and New Haven. Hope you enjoyed these scenes from along the way!

Great tour! Same goes for your D.C. thread - very enjoyable to see the mix of neighborhoods and architectural highlights, along with some of the fine food and coffee shops

Very nice, some of the photos have great effects. Bricks, mortar, & trees, maybe every city just needs to be like this.

Excellent showcases of these mid Atlantic cities

You should send the pics to Chris Arnade as a counterpoint to his tours

Great pictures! You covered a lot of ground! So many neighborhoods, two Ivy League campuses, and plenty of New Haven and Hoboken pictures!

I typically stop at Modern Apizza on my way to Cape Cod. (That, or stop at Zuppardi's in West Haven.) The Italian Bomb pizza (pepperoni, sausage, bacon, peppers, onions, mushrooms, and garlic) is supposed to be their best, but I think their clams casino (clams, bacon, peppers, and onions) is even better. Their clams casino pizza is the best leftover pizza I've ever had, since the clams open up with flavor after a few hours or overnight. I recommend trying a white clam pizza as leftovers some time and letting the clams open up with flavor.

Wow! I loved your tour & photos! Bonus points for the excellent photos of underappreciated New Haven & Hoboken.

I had no idea you could find poutine in NYC. Looks like the real deal too! Funny that you have to go to a Belgian restaurant to get a dish that comes from Quebec!
