Truckee & the Sierra, plus Carson City & Virginia City NV

Last weekend I drove up to Truckee to check it out and then headed east into NV where I visited Reno, historic Virginia City, and the Nevada state capital Carson City. I’ll post Reno photos in a different thread, but the rest of the photos are here.

1. Truckee, CA – Nice little downtown with some good shops and restaurants. Seems like a great option for a second home for those with excess money (and it looked like plenty there fit that category). So close to gorgeous Lake Tahoe, but unlike anywhere along the actual
Tahoe lakefront Truckee offers a legit nice old downtown. Plus, it’s even closer to beautiful Donner Lake (photos a little further down). Truckee is also easy to reach via I-80 (after a long slug up through the northeast suburbs of Sacramento) or even via Amtrak if you prefer. So I’m a fan!

10. Adjacent to Truckee is the Donner Pass and Donner Lake. The area is infamous for the Donner Party, which resorted to cannibalism to survive being stuck there in winter.

26. Virginia City, NV – Much of this old silver mining town is designated as a National Historic Landmark historic district. I hadn’t heard of the place and it wasn’t on my itinerary, but I happened to see a live news report on a local Reno tv station from Virginia City covering their Halloween festivities. It looked unique so I decided to stop by on my way from Reno to Carson City. Not surprisingly it was very tourist-oriented, but it ended up being a nice little side excursion.

44. Carson City, NV - the state capital. I visited on a Sunday so not surprisingly it wasn’t all that busy downtown, but the streetscape along the main corridor was rather pleasant and there were some nice little shops & restaurants.

And that's all for this thread. As I'd said at the top, at some point I plan on posting some photos from Reno. Hope you enjoyed these photos from my little weekend trip.

Very nice. Yes, Truckee is much nicer than the towns along Lake Tahoe. Kings Beach is alright. I have a home in Incline Village, NV, which is very suburban style development.

Nice pics!

I haven't been to Truckee since maybe 2004 or so; I think I last went through Carson City on the same road trip. And I haven't been to Virginia City since I was 14, back in 1984. I didn't appreciate it back then; it looks like a cute town, similar-looking to a California Gold Rush-era town.

About 25 years ago I was involved in the restoration of the Virginia City Post Office. It was one of my first projects out of school. Interesting little town. Always reminded me of Bieber, Arizona.

I love this memorial! Much better than the veterans one.

So much to see in this beautiful state, I never been to Truckee but have heard a lot about it when I lived in Fresno. I heard it got a lot of snow was one of the things most people mentioned.

Truckee looks beautiful and the setting is incredible. I recall years ago USA Today would show the coldest and hottest places the previous day in the lower 48 and Truckee or West Yellowstone would often be the coldest in the summer.

There is no mistaking which country you are in based on the photos of Virginia City.
