Noticing that the core seems to be something like 11 stories tall.
But the first phase is said to be 8 out of the final 18 stories?

Is the lamppost new or were you standing in front of it for the prior picture?

Interesting that the steel structure has a cross bracing. Any one know what that is for, since the building isn't really that tall? Maybe the option to build on top of the building once it is completed at a future date when more demand arises.

Yeah it's been confirmed that they are building it in 2 phases.

I know the final height is 18 floors and I'm no engineer but the steel seems extra heavy for only 18 stories. Or maybe Penn just uses the best building materials. Even the tower crane seems extra heavy duty.

The braced frames resist lateral forces (wind, seismic) in the north-south direction; the core shearwalls resist those forces in an east-west direction.

Some of the beam spans are quite long, so the beams are upsized a bit for vibration response, to keep them from "fluttering" under foot traffic/moving loads. If you are Christmas shopping at KOP, just stop for a second and lean on the second level railings--you can feel the mall floors flutter as people walk by.....

Move in date is 10 months away and supposedly no delays have happened yet.

Many of us will miss being next to City Hall, which is great for lunch and simpler commuting. Being out there is going to be like being on the edge of a city near a cliff drop-off. Almost everyone taking trains will have to switch trains at 30th Street, etc. Most of the University City trains were nerfed by Septa a few years back in a couple waves. Many trains that did pass through now originate from the 30th St yard.

That aside it will be nice to have most of our department in one building. We are scattered across several now. I'm hoping that the second phase will get approved soon so that the construction can just keep on going, similar to how the South Tower of Perelman kept getting approved as it went up.

Cheers,
G.
