NEOM | The Line | 1,640 FT | 110 Miles Long

I am not sure if there is a thread for this one yet. But this project is U/C confirmed by drone footage, etc. Who knows if it will ever get completed.

The Line is supposedly going to be 110 miles long and 1600 feet tall in Saudi Arabia. It will house 9 million people and be a carbon neutral city free of cars.

Architectural Digest Article about the line with pics.

I sure hope there aren't any airports/flightpaths around this thing. That looks insane.

Yea, luckily 500m is a pretty low altitude for a commercial airliner.

Hell, wouldn't be surprised if they planned to put a runway on this thing lol.

Is this actually a real proposal? Seems more than far fetched but it'd be cool if it happened.

We’ll see if it ever happens, it will probably end up being like the Dubai Creek Tower and never actually be completed. But who knows, this project is backed by the Saudi family and it seems like they’re pretty invested in it with 500 billion in backing with an ultimate price tag of over 1 trillion. I mean the US has wasted over 100 billion soon that could have been spent on our crumbling infrastructure on Ukraine in order to enrich the military industrial complex in a year so a trillion really isn’t anything.

They already have the full 110 miles dug out and ready for build and in only 3 or so months so that’s pretty damn impressive.

One thing I hope the Saudi government has considered with this massive wall project is wildlife. It being 110 miles long it would surely impede the free flow of wildlife that would migrate etc in that area. It being a so called carbon neutral project and environmentally friendly I hope they have tunnels or whatever so that wildlife can flow freely through it. Also, if the wall is going to be 1600 feet tall and basically like a mirror, millions upon millions of migrating birds would smash into it and die, so hopefully they’ve taken that into account as well…

It's a complete myth that the Great Wall can be seen from space. It's narrower than the average back lane. You can't see a back lane from a jet liner at cruising altitude.

Anyway, this thing is just horrible in every way. It makes no sense, frankly. It will just be a giant wall.

But the real question is what this thing is doing in this sub thread. It's not a supertall and its construction status is debatable.

Supposedly it will be governed by itself outside of the influence of the Saudi government but if it ever comes to fruition we shall see.

The problem is that the budget is much too low. $500 billion sounds like a lot of money, but the building has a volume of 17 billion cubic metres. So the budget is less than $30 per cubic metre. If if most of the building is empty space, $30 per cubic metre is far from enough. Even a large arena, which has a lot of empty space, costs much more than $30 per cubic metre. With a more realistic budget of $500 per cubic metre the building would already cost $8.5 trillion. That's more that the complete GPD of Saudi Arabia for ten years.

A great technical problem are the high speed trains. They have a $30 billion contract with Korean company for the rail tracks and the trains. The problem though is that a trains are not yet developed yet. So they have to build tunnels for trains that to not exist yet, before they can build anything above ground. There may already be trains that can reach a maximum speed of 330 miles per hour, but connecting each point of The Line with every other point within 20 minutes is not even possible with trains like that, because those high speed trains can only have a very small number of stops along The Line. At those stops passengers would have to switch to slower trains that stop even more often. At those stops passengers would have to switch again to local trains, which will finally bring them to a stop in walkable distance of their final destination. Even a maximum travel time of one hour would be very hard to achieve, but 20 minutes would be completely impossible.

If just 1% of The Line would be built, that would already be by far the largest building in the world. If someone announces that he wants to break a record by a factor of more than 100, people should be very sceptical.

Actually pretty original, with some neat design elements. I think they should aim though for something perhaps around 3-5 miles long and see how that works out.
