Zip Line Coming to Coney Island’s Stillwell Avenue in July

June 28, 2012 by Tricia

Quote:
This summer in Coney Island may be remembered as the year people harnessed up and took flight over the upturned heads of astonished visitors. Scream Zone’s 110-foot-tall SkyCoaster, which debuted in May as “Boardwalk Flight,” has riders soaring out over the Boardwalk. Next month, Patrick Ingram of Category 5 Ziplines plans to install a 60-foot-high, 400-foot-long zip line in Coney Island that will let riders glide in the sky over Stillwell Avenue.

“I’m a skydiver who has taught people how to skydive without jumping out of airplanes,” says Ingram, owner of Michigan-based Category 5 Productions. “I started with wind tunnels twelve years ago. It evolved into zip lines over the past three years.” Coney Island Zip Line is expected to open July 21st with four stationary zip lines.

Ingram tells ATZ that the starting point will be just beyond the new MegaWhirl ride in Cha Cha’s Steeplechase Park on the east side of Stillwell. The zip line will traverse Stillwell Avenue, with its ending point being on the other side of the BK Festival’s vendors behind Nathan’s Famous! “It’s a little longer than your typical zip line, which is 200 to 300 feet,” he says. The ride itself is about 25 seconds but the entire experience from the time the rider gets into the harness is 15 to 20 minutes.

Originally planned to open on July 1, the zip line’s debut has been rescheduled for July 21 due to paperwork delays. “It’s taken a bit longer than we thought to get the engineering drawings required for this project,” says Ingram, who adds that everyone he’s working with in New York City is excited about the zip line.

Article about the struggle to attract residential development to Coney Island:

http://www.bkbureau.org/coney-islands-invisible-towers

Quote:
Yet amidst all the noisy mermaid-filled debates that accompanied the rezoning battle, it's been easy to forget that the amusement district proper — a beachfront strip of rides, carny games and skeeball parlors that over the decades has shrunk to a relict dozen or so acres — was never the main target of the city's rezoning efforts. Though the storefronts along Surf (including the homes of Denny's and Eldorado) were slated for high-rise hotels on the city's rezoning renderings, much of the focus of the Coney Island Development Corporation (spun off by the city Economic Development Corporation in 2003 to oversee redevelopment plans) was to the west, where the city's stated intent was to bring mixed-use housing and retail towers to the vacant lots that have littered Surf Avenue since they were cleared for urban renewal in the 1960s. Click here to see a map of the rezoned area.
Quote:
Three years later, though, there is little sign of the condo messiah arriving anytime soon. A single apartment building on the boardwalk at West 32nd Street was begun two winters ago, but today remains unfinished. Nearby, Coney Island Commons, a mixed-income coop complex that will include a new YMCA-run community center, has blown past its original summer 2009 target completion date — thanks to delays in finalizing financing and community agreements, according to developer Jerome Kretchmer — and is now slated for an opening in 2013.

And there won't be, because financing issues aside, the City hasn't even begun the major infrastructure work that will be necessary for all of this development. That's planned to get underway this fall.

Ups and Downs Now Confined Mostly to Rides

By JAKE MOONEY
July 6, 2012

Quote:

MERMAID AVENUE, the main commercial street through Coney Island’s largest residential section, stretches two dozen blocks west from the faded, raucous amusement park district, past telltale evidence of the area’s varied past. There are brick tenement buildings with storefronts that, in the mid-20th century, housed the bakeries, butcher shops and luncheonettes that were staples of a thriving neighborhood. There are empty lots remaining from Coney Island’s worst years, in the 1960s and ’70s, when much of the neighborhood drifted away or went up in smoke. And there are tidy one-family houses, white with red awnings — block upon block of them, built beginning in the 1980s by a community development organization seeking to fill the emptiness.

Today’s Coney Island, according to residents, officials and real estate brokers, is in yet another phase: safer and more stable than at its low point, populated largely by middle-class homeowners, yet still without the full complement of infrastructure that such a community needs. At the same time residents are holding their breath for a long-planned but recently delayed reinvention of the amusement district, along with construction of thousands of housing units near the boardwalk. The city government approved plans in 2009, though the timetable for those undertakings is unclear.

Eddie Mark, a Department of Transportation sign painter and the chairman of Community Board 13, which represents the area, lives in one of the nearly 1,000 row houses that the Astella Development Corporation built in the 1980s and ’90s. The three-bedroom house, for which Mr. Mark, now 47, paid about $110,000 in 1995, is worth about $300,000, he said. Buyers like himself “were all working-class citizens, and basically wanted the American dream, wanted to own their own house.”

Brooklyn: A tipping point for Coney Island
Remember Times Square? The 'People's Playground' is on the same trajectory.

By Shane Dixon Kavanaugh
July 8, 2012

Quote:

So long, Sodom by the Sea. Fueled by a surge of city cash and visions of a year-round attraction, Coney Island is on the verge of a death-defying revival that has some uttering two words: Times Square. The gritty seaside strip has bounced back from the brink of desolation, and its boosters believe the best is yet to come.

...But the neighborhood's success may make it harder to resist pressure from developers to grow, like Times Square, ever bigger and more upscale. Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz has come out swinging for a casino at Coney Island, should New York legalize gambling within the next few years. And developer Joseph Sitt still dreams of building big-league projects, such as high-rise hotels and megaplexes, on the peninsula.

After years of tough negotiations, the city snapped up seven acres of prime real estate from Mr. Sitt for nearly $100 million. The developer, meanwhile, promised to scale back his original vision of a $1.5 billion Las Vegas-style resort. The upgrades have paid off. Last year, 640,000 visitors streamed through the turnstiles at 2-year-old Luna Park and the Scream Zone, according to park operator Central Amusement International—numbers that Coney Island's amusement district hadn't seen since the famed Steeplechase Park closed in 1964. This season's crowds are expected to swell after the offerings were expanded in May to include a go-cart track and a host of new rides.

Builders like Mr. Sitt don't think the city is moving fast enough to prepare Coney Island for the next wave. Officials have yet to deliver, he noted, on $150 million in infrastructure projects that would improve sewer systems for underdeveloped parcels of land. "Candidly, we need to get this done," Mr. Sitt said. "The vision is far from complete."

New York City Economic Development Corp. President Seth Pinsky has insisted the city will break ground on the upgrades by the end of the year, a timeline that sits well with "Mayor" Zigun.

New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver is eying Coney Island and Willets Point in Queens
for a casino,
the Daily News learns Silver won't go for a Manhattan location because of dense population

August 13, 2012

Quote:
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver hasn’t played his hand on where he’d like to see a casino in the city, but he is open to Coney Island or Willets Point, the Daily News has learned. While talks won’t heat up for several months, Silver favors a location that is either already a “destination resort area” in the city, or could become one, a source close to the speaker said. Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens is also a place he would consider, the source said.

Some insiders want a casino to be part of a redevelopment of the Jacob Javits Convention Center on the West Side. But Silver remains adamant about keeping gambling dens out of Manhattan and other densely populated parts of the city, the source said. The speaker has not shut the door on Coney Island, which is being promoted by many influential types in Brooklyn — including Borough President Marty Markowitz — as a way to bring more people to the historic seaside destination, which has its famed amusement park and now a minor league baseball stadium.

And some have floated the idea of a casino as part of the planned megadevelopment of the gritty Willets Point site near Citi Field. Silver hasn’t axed that concept, either. The source close to Silver said the Bloomberg administration is privately backing Willets Point as a suitable spot, although a spokesman for the mayor denied that was the case. The Legislature took the first step this year toward passing a constitutional amendment to legalize casino gambling and authorize up to seven casinos in the state. New York City is in line for one, but Gov. Cuomo and lawmakers are not expected to press for a deal on casino locations before next year.

Silver, the source said, expects that “one or two other sites (in the city) could pop up as we move forward.”

Looks like Coney Island is seriously being considered this time. It's come around before, but the chances are higher now that the state intends to legalize full blown casinos. I was against it here, but I'd rather have a casino here and not in Manhattan. And it would also help jumpstart the redevelopment.

Big bets for Boardwalk!
Coney Island in running for new casino site

August 18, 2012

Quote:
The state Assembly leader is now looking at three potential sites to approve the city’s first full-service gambling casino — at Aqueduct where the racino already exists, at the Iron Triangle of Willets Point near Citi Field, and on Coney Island.

“After seeing that racino at Aqueduct make a half-a-bil in six months, the state knows it’s time for a real casino to raise some tax money,” the Bookie said. “No better place than right here. If that Hasbro toy casino can rake in that kinda cash from machines without hot broads in low-cut dresses blowing lady luck on cold dice at a craps table, without oil sheiks betting their harems at baccarat, without your fast-talking blackjack dealer telling you his life story as he takes you for your lungs, you can’t imagine how much coin they’ll make when the high rollers show up with hot broads at a real casino here in Coney Island. Fuhgeddaboudit.”

NY1 Exclusive: Sources Detail New Coney Island Development Plans

By: Jeanine Ramirez
8/21/2012

Quote:
The former Child's Restaurant is not only a part of Coney Island history, it's also a city landmark. The once-grand building had its heyday back in the 1920s. It's been vacant for a long time but sources tell NY1 the city is in talks to turn the Spanish Colonial Revival structure into an entertainment complex. "I think it would be incredible if the Child's building was re-opened as an entertainment venue," says Coney Island historian and author Charles Denson. "It's one of the gems of Coney Island. The arches in front have the most beautiful terracotta. It's all nautical themed."

Sources say its centerpiece will be a new concert venue. Borough President Marty Markowitz has long dreamed of building an amphitheater to hold his annual outdoor summer concert series by the sea. Sources tell NY1 Markowitz has raised about $50 million for an enclosed concert facility but that money will now be used for this project. Sources say the lot west of the building will also be developed as part of the complex.

NY1 has also learned that the historic B&B carousel, which will be housed in a newly created pavilion, has a new operator. Sources say the city chose Zamperla, which already runs the Cyclone, Luna Park and Scream Zone.

Over on Surf and Stillwell Avenues, sources tell NY1 a Wet Willies Daquiri Bar franchise deal is in the works. It would be the first in the city for the Georgia-based frozen drink chain. And across Surf, a contractor says he's building space for two restaurants. Hooters reportedly has an interest in the site after finding opposition in other parts of the borough. That news is drawing mixed reaction.

Coney Island courts Hooters: Surf Avenue landlord asks beer-and-babe chain to move in

Lot at 1223 Surf Ave. in Coney Island where landlord is trying to get Hooters to open a restaurant

By Simone Weichselbaum
August 27, 2012

Quote:

Park Slope’s snub is Coney Island’s dream.

A Surf Avenue landlord is wooing Hooters to rent out the soon-to-be constructed restaurant on top of his vacant lot - three months after a parental uproar in Park Slope over the chain’s interest in opening near the Barclays center.

Landlord Natan Bukai and his broker Joe Vitacco have spent the summer sending sketches to Hooters officials detailing how 1223 Surf Avenue can transform into Brooklyn’s hub for buxom beauties serving cheap beer and wings.

“Maybe for Park Slope, they are right (to reject Hooters),” said Bukai. “But for Coney Island, it is very good.”

Source: Luna Park operator poised to light up Parachute Jump

By WIll Bredderman
September 14, 2012

Quote:
The company that brought Luna Park and the Scream Zone to Coney Island is close to penning a deal that will allow it to fulfull a longtime dream of Borough President Markowitz’s — stringing up the Parachute Jump with millions of lights so it could be seen from Mars, insiders say.

The city’s Economic Development Corporation, which will oversee the Parachute Jump’s bling-over that Markowitz has invested $2 million in taxpayer dollars towards, would not confirm that Central Amusements has won the bid to light up the landmarked spire, but Coney Island civic leaders say the company has been parading around a video of what the iconic ride would look like if they were given the contract.

“It looked like you really could see it from space,” said Mermaid Parade founder Dick Zigun, who said he viewed the video where the ride is re-illuminated complete with dancing, LED lights synchronized with the brilliant beams of the Scream Zone. “I was completely blown away by it.”

Coney Is. coaster revival

By RICH CALDER
September 21, 2012

Quote:

The site of an old Coney Island roller coaster that was immortalized by Woody Allen and then torn down to make way for a Mets farm team in 2000 is going to be revived — possibly with a new thrill ride to compete with the Cyclone, The Post has learned. The city today will begin seeking proposals from developers to bring rides, games and other entertainment to an acre of city-owned land at West 15th Street and the boardwalk that once housed the Thunderbolt roller-coaster. City honchos, sources said, would love to see a new coaster back at the narrow tract — a key first step toward bringing attractions back to the boardwalk west of Stillwell Avenue.

The wooden Thunderbolt opened in 1925 and was in operation until 1982. It was built atop a 19th-century home, originally known as the Kensington Hotel. In Allen’s 1977 “Annie Hall,” the house under the coaster was the childhood home of lead character Alvy Singer. It was actually occupied until the mid-1980s. It was torn down in 2000.Despite calls for the Thunderbolt to be landmarked, the rickety ride and house was razed in 2000 on orders from then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who saw it as an eyesore for fans at the minor league ballpark being built for the Brooklyn Cyclones.

Coney Island West 15th Street Amusements RFP
Submission Deadline: October 23, 2012 at 4:00 pm

Quote:
NYCEDC is seeking proposals for a lease agreement for the development and operation of amusement rides, game booths and/or ancillary entertainment attractions at the properties located at 1502 Surf Avenue and 1501 Boardwalk West in the Coney Island neighborhood in the Borough of Brooklyn. The site is approximately 40,700 sf and is located in the entertainment/amusement core of the Coney Island Special Zoning District. The site is currently owned by the City. NYCEDC anticipates entering into a lease agreement for the site for a term of up to 10 years, although proposals may suggest other terms.

NYCEDC plans to select a developer on the basis of factors stated in the RFP which include, but are not limited to: the quality of the proposal, the qualifications of the development team, the proposal’s consistency with the overall City goals, demonstrated successful experience in performing services similar to those encompassed in the RFP, and the proposed financial terms.

City wants to bring more amusements to Coney Island

By Will Bredderman
September 27, 2012

Quote:
The city wants to bring more amusements to Coney Island and the thrill rides could be built where the Thunderbolt rollercoaster once roared — if someone ponies up $90 million, a major Coney Island land owner declared this week. Reports that new rides will be built at the site of the fictional home of “Annie Hall” character Alvy Singer are not true, said Horace Bullard, who owns the waterfront property where the ride-and-home once stood — but he’d be willing to let the city do what it wants with his land if it pays him what he thinks it’s worth.

According to Bullard, other nearby properties — specifically the Washington Baths site at Surf Avenue and West 21st Street — cost a pretty penny.

“They billed $90 million for that,” Bullard told us. But until the Mayor offers him that sum, his property will not become a part of the city’s plan. “What the city is doing is with the city’s land,” Bullard said, pointing out that the Economic Development Corporation is actually looking to develop the pair of tracts next door to his on W. 15th Street between Surf Avenue and Bowery Street, and between Bowery Street and the Boardwalk. “Our land is still our land.”

Bullard, who has been blasted for halting Coney Island’s resurgence by refusing to develop or sell properties like the long-vacant Shore Theater, purchased the Thunderbolt site in 1985 as part of a plan to rebuild the legendary Steeplechase Park. That plan fell through, but now the city’s Economic Development Corporation wants new rides, games, and other attractions on an adjacent site where the Wild Mouse, a single-car coaster torn down in the late ’70s, and the Magic Carpet, a funhouse full of papier-mache figurines once stood.

Longtime Coney Island boosters say they can’t wait to see new rides rise in Coney. “There is nothing better that could go on those pieces of land than a major roller coaster,” said Dick Zigun, Coney Island’s unofficial mayor, who once suggested the city use its power of eminent domain to take property away from Bullard. “Luna Park should go from the Cyclone to the Parachute Jump,” Zigun said.

Parachute Jump getting LED light system

By RICH CALDER
November 28, 2012

Quote:
Coney Island’s landmark Parachute Jump is finally getting its “bling.” The city’s Economic Development Corp. has tapped the seaside neighborhood’s biggest amusement operator to fulfill Borough President Marty Markowitz’s vision of overhauling the 262-foot-tall structure’s lackluster lighting system with more “bling” so it could become Brooklyn’s “Eiffel Tower.” Zamperla USA – which runs Luna Park and other attractions – was selected to install 8,000 colored LED lights across the Parachute Jump that will be programmable for shows and special events with music.

“The Parachute Jump will finally have enough ‘bling’ to be visible even from outer space,” crowed Markowitz, who secured $2 million in city funding for the project. The new lighting proposal is set to go before city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission on Dec. 11 for final blessing. If approved, the lights are expected to be installed and running by next summer, city officials said.

“With this new lighting design, the Parachute Jump will become a beacon for the neighborhood and show that Coney Island will not only recover from Hurricane Sandy, but continue its revitalization into New York’s premier oceanfront destination,” said EDC spokesman Kyle Sklerov.

Any thoughts of building a seawall or raising the land there to prevent flooding in a future Sandy (or worse)?
