I assume it's for the increased demand due to SaskBuild&Procurement's IT Division moving into the building next door. The building is now max capacity and there is a severe shortage of parking for employees. The Quality hotel can gain some breathing room for it's guests and at the same time gain some monthly parking revenue.

Agreed. That parking lot has always been very crowded and the street parking packed around SaskEnergy and Social Services (Income Assistance).

Hotel Sask has been planning for 25 years to build a parkade on Scarth behind the hotel. It just keeps getting put off.

It was actually more than just a parkade.

The Hotel Saskatchewan was planning to build a $30 million dollar, 16-storey addition, immediately south of the hotel, and would be connected to the main hotel by enclosed walkways. It would have included 197 deluxe guest rooms, and 70 condominium units, plus retail and recreation facilities, an indoor atrium and underground parking with 150 spaces. The main entrance to the hotel would shift from Victoria Avenue to a new enclosed area reached from Scarth Street. The hotel would have a total of 450 rooms upon completion.

The above information is from the December 8, 1982 Regina Leader-Post.

I know the hotel had a lot of financial issues a few decades ago, plus at the time the economy was in a recession, so I believe this, and the cost of the proposal, is why this never proceeded.

There is a photo of the model that had been made in this article.

That looks slightly better than the ugly huge box monstrosity they built in Edmonton for the Hotel Mac back in the day.
