Where would the rails go in any future upgrade to the bridge?

Probably on the inner spans.

The new bridge will carry eight general traffic lanes (four each on the westbound and eastbound spans), breakdown/emergency lanes,
space for future bus rapid transit and commuter rail, and an advanced traffic monitoring system.

It's a looker for sure. The cable stay bridges are far more futuristic in appearance than suspension bridges I think, they just have that clean modern look to them and the fan of cables are very high-tech expressionist.

NY Daily News says the old Tappan Zee Bridge is closed and all traffic, in both directions, is now redirected over the West-Bound new bridge span. The last car to travel the old bridge was a 1929 Ford Phaeton.

Does anyone know anything about the discoloration of the concrete in the towers? The variation in tone occurs between pours - is this a matter of the concrete curing, or will the bridge always look a bit naff?

I suspect that the number of commuters from Rockland doesn't justify the cost. As it is, many commuters from Rockland drive to Irvington and take MNR from there. Also, some rail line on the west side of the Hudson goes to Nyack, and many commuters take that to Penn.

^And add in the American approach which says 'if there's not enough demand now, there never will be' and doesn't seem to care enough to actually drastically change mode share.

If you add it, someone has to operate the lines and taxpayers have to pay for the construction/operating costs until it turns a penny. If it doesn't ever generate revenue then it wastes all of our money, by the millions/billions...

Rail is too expensive to build on a purely speculative hunch.

When complete in 2018, the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge will mean less congestion and frustration for motorists, with eight general traffic lanes, breakdown/emergency lanes, and a state-of-the-art traffic monitoring system. The new crossing will also be mass-transit ready, with space for Bus Rapid Transit as well as a design that can accommodate future light rail or commuter rail. The bridge will also feature a shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists.

Not often you see asphalt topped decks on bridges where exposed decks have typically been concrete. I’m wondering if this is a precaution to add extra protective layers to the deck substrate. Past issues in bridges were salt getting in the cracks and reaching steel tendons either supporting or holding the span together.

If you build it, you can operate it later. If you don't build it, they won't come.

And adding a lane for rail might have increased the total cost of this project by about .03%,
