Pittsburgh: Raw, Uncut & Hardcore, Pt. 2

the Penn Ave. corridor has been transformed by enterprising artists... it's still in a transitional state... but it's building a critical mass and things are beginning to take off in the area

the neighbourhood vegan coffeehouse

the neighbourhood of Garfield has struggled for a long time... it's beautiful homes ravaged by neglect and disinvestment... but hundreds of new homes are being constructed there now and there is hope for the future

some of my favourite houses in Pittsburgh... unfortunately some of them are vacant

this was built last year on Penn Ave... it features 60 senior housing units and retail space... I quite like the design... Phase 2 of the project will have artist lofts, restaurant, retail, etc....

the Clarendon Place row was rehabbed a few years back and won a national design award

The Friendship neighbourhood is filled with gigantic beautiful homes like these... keep an eye out for it in the movie "Smart People"... in theatres later this year... starring Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker and Thomas Haden Church

The East Liberty skyline from Garfield

new housing in Garfield

Black St.

East Liberty

a recent victim of arson

East Liberty Park is one of several large housing developments in this long-blighted neighbourhood... Phase One features 124 mixed-income rental units, restoration of street grid, fitness center, etc...

Old school... the last remaining of three residential skyscrapers in East Liberty that helped destroy it... this is slated for demolition in the near future

1960s/70s era crap... across the street from Liberty Park

the sad St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in the distance

what a heartbreaking sight

how proud the parishoners must've been upon completion in 1891... and how horrified they'd be if they saw it today

a long dead Catholic school

landmarks of East Liberty... the Highland Building is going condo... one of these days

one of the best bars in the city

patrons stand outside the Shadow Lounge

construction continues at the EastSide retail development in East Liberty... a LEED-certified green development... existing tenents include Whole Foods, Borders, Walgreens, Trek, mooi organic baby clothing, a spa, Starbucks, PNC Bank, liquor store, etc.

This must be some twisted April Fool's joke because there is no way any city can be that cool.

Outstanding! No matter how many Pittsburgh photos are posted, there's always something new!

Great photos of Pittsburgh, Evergrey. Also, even in its deteriorated state, I'm still drawn to the architecture of churches even if this one was built in the late 19th century:

Very nice again.
but that St. Peter's and Paul's has me upset. That looks like 1 of the nicest churches I ever seen to just go and detoriate like that is depressing.

Nice pics. While both East Liberty and the Friendship side of Penn Ave. have made great strides in the past 4 years, Garfield Heights has just languished. The housing stock is nice and not completely deteriorated, but crime and drugs are huge problems in that hood. Did you run into any problems walking around there?

Maybe because it's the exterior used in the church scenes of the movie Dogma.

No.

The "hillcrest" area of Garfield is quite gorgeous with its dense tree canopy and hilly terrain.

You're probably aware that the 1960s era Garfield Heights housing project is to be demolished this month... replaced by 275 "mixed-income" units along Mossfield, Schenley and Fern.

The Bloomfield-Garfield Corp. is in the midst of developing 50 scattered site units in Garfield.

And then there's also the Penn Ave. redevelopment project.

Yes, the hilltop in Garfield is very beautiful, and many of the lots and homes have great views of the East End. However, open air drug deals and gang activity are still regular occurrences along Graham, N. Aiken and the side streets. The construction of the Garfield Heights public housing pretty much chased the remaining middle class from the neighborhood, and the result is something many people are trying working to fix. I just hope the spillover from Pen Ave., and Garfield Heights tear- down/rebuild (which has some major undermining issues that need to be addressed) is enough to tip the hood the other direction.

Again, keep up with the pics!

Thanks for the great tour. Good shots of the neighborhoods as always, EG. I miss living there, especially the East End.

I've always liked these houses too.

Love this photo!
