Violence just getting out of control in T.O. Good thing the city will spend an extra $48.3 million this year to hire 200 more police officers.

^The media likes to exaggerate the prevalence of crime, and the public laps it up. "If it bleeds, it leads" still holds true, decades after having been coined.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are some places that are already at or have surpassed 19 murders for this year to date.
It's a fluke. On average, we have between 60 and 80 murders annually.

Well, certainly there's some randomness in any given year as to what dates murders happen on..........and therefore projected rates.

However, if you look at the 5-year trendline right off the Toronto Police Data Portal, Homicides were at a 5-year low last year.

Shootings were also at a 5-year low last year.

Much was made of the rise is 'Major Crimes' which were up in absolute numbers, however, when you compare them to the pre-covid numbers and adjust for population growth, even that rate is in decline.

That's not to suggest Toronto is crime-free, it most certainly is not, and some publicity existed in the latter 1/2 of 2022 on a rise in incidents on the TTC (supported by the data).

That said, I would suggest the overall trend on homicides and murders is down, and *knock wood* we might be hopeful of it declining further in 2023.

Philadelphia is at 20. It was at 38 this time last year.

It's a 38% drop so far.

There’s already been 9 homicides in Pittsburgh with only a little over two weeks into 2023. Looks like this year will be even worse than last year, which was the worst year in decades.

There was a homicide at around 2 in downtown Pittsburgh right outside of my gfs office today. She heard the gun shots. Pretty scary shit.

22 now. Any decrease is good news of course but 72 shootings so far this year and so much work still needs to be done.

Are you referencing the mental guy where the Cops showed up and showed restraint as the guy chased the cops around cars before he was shot? The rise in murders began when the new Mayor and DA took office. Thats easy to see here: https://www.phillypolice.com/crime-maps-stats

I get what you are saying, but I am getting tired of this line. The town I work in had some violent incidents as of late, and people are scared. This is silly, as this town is usually very very safe.

However, if you have murders and carjackings and assault happening all around you all year, there is an issue. Why do Americans just accept just insane levels of crime? No, it is not normal. No, it doesn't make you a "real" city dweller to think the level of crime is acceptable. It doesn't make a city edgy or whatever, it makes it shit.

Agreed. We were able to build our cities back up by making them safer and luring people in. A lot of progress is quickly vanishing and we are at risk of losing some people forever.

4 murders in Austin so far in 2023. Still, 2022 saw 18 fewer murders than the 89 there were in 2021, a 20% drop. I can't read the full article since it's behind a paywall, but here's an excerpt from the American-Statesman:

Quote:
Killings were down by 18 from the 89 cases in 2021, when Austin had the most homicides in all the years that police have kept such records.
On a side note, murders were up 120% in 2022 in Travis County outside of Austin's city limits.

Travis County homicides up 120% outside of Austin City Limits

by Melanie TorreFriday, August 26th 2022

"We have seen more of the violent crime that's actually being committed with firearms and that's concerning," Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon told CBS Austin in August. Chacon said the department would continue working to curb gun violence but adds for a city of over a million people, Austin is still considered generally safe compared to other cities of the same size.

"We have an incredibly low homicide rate and overall violent crime rate," Chacon added.

CBS Austin looked at data outside of Austin and found violent crime is impacting rural communities too—most notably the area immediately outside of the Austin City Limits.

In Travis County, the area outside of Austin Police's jurisdiction, homicides are up 120 percent. This week the Travis County Sheriff's Office announced they're investigating their 11th homicide of 2022 compared to five homicides at this time in 2021. In all of 2021 the Travis County Sheriff's Office investigated 12 total homicides.

São Paulo (state) 2022: 3,044 homicides; 6.7/100,000.

It's a 7% increase, reversing a 20-year long downward trend. Numbers are back to 2018 levels.

564,900 thefts, 245,900 robberies and 12,600 rapes were registered. Thefts back to 2005 levels and rapes to 2001. Robberies fell slightly.

While still atrociously high, Chicago's homicide tally is at least continuing to trend downward from the giant spike.

Though the end of January:

2021: 58
2022: 52 (-10.3%)
2023: 44 (-15.4%)

Toronto saw 3 homicides in January. Very promising start, but it's certain to increase as the weather warms.

Philly

JAN 2021: 50
JAN 2022: 44
JAN 2023: 30

Still too high but hopefully this trend holds. I think our Police Commissioner (who has had a very rough reception) has implemented some effective changes in the past 4 months that are bearing fruit.

Does that CBC producer guy who was killed count? I think with him it might be 4.

He is not included. Yes, he died on 1.31., a week after having been assaulted on Danforth.

Thank goodness Chicago crime stats are trending downward. My observation is that for some reason society accepts tougher policing during election time than non-election time. Maybe I am being cynical, but it surely seems the case among Chicagoans that I know that suddenly want crime dealt with by any means necessary.
