Work Progressing On Santiago Calatrava’s St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church In The Financial District

Quote:
Construction has topped out on the Santiago Calatrava-designed St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church the Financial District. Located by the intersection of Greenwich Street and Liberty Street in the elevated Liberty Park, the structure will replace the original church of the same name located at 155 Cedar Street, which was destroyed on 9/11. The symmetrical architectural design was inspired by Istanbuls’ Hagia Sophia and Church of the Holy Savior of Chora. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is developing the project, which is positioned across from the original 16-acre World Trade Center complex.

Work is also progressing on the main entrance on the western side facing Liberty Park and a set of staircases going down to Liberty Street. Wooden boards temporarily cover the stone pavers already laid underneath.

The underside of the dome is planned to feature a colorful circular painting of Jesus. On the exterior, the curved walls will be clad in 1,000 eight-inch-thick Pentelic marble slabs, and the corners of the structure will be covered with solid, opaque slabs. Two panes of glass are planned to surround the white marble and create an envelope translucent enough for the church to be lit by diffused natural light during the day and for the interior lighting to radiate through at night.

The church is rendered to be illuminated at night with a warm glow, much like the architectural plans for the nearby Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center that is also expected to feature an external marble enclosure.

A completion date for St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church has not been announced, though sometime in 2021 is conceivable if construction continues at its current pace.

I've already seen comments online about how over time the white marble tiling is starting to become dull. The rainy weather New York often experiences clearly isn't good for the long term maintenance of the marble, even with regular exterior cleaning.

How do they plan to address the weathering of the marble structure of the Oculus over time? The same weathering of the marble plaza on the original world trade center superblock occurred and significantly marred the appearance of the plaza over time until the plaza was finally renovated with granite stone pavers. I imagine that with climate change, the weather being more extreme than in the past (more temperature extremes and more heavy precipitation) isn't going to help issues and will probably degrade the marble even quicker.

Recent video about lighting in the Oculus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYc85sVRifA

The lighting was enhanced in 2020 in time for Veterans Day so that it would shine not just on the arches but also the top skylight section:

Speaking of the Oculus. They need to replace the floors, this building isn't that old but the floors already look terrible. Pretty sure it's because the material chosen looked great but obviously wasn't going to be able to handle the stresses.

It's probably because the white marble used for the floors has become stained from weathering. This is a problem even in closed off areas (like with the marble in the lobbies of the Old WTC which dulled and yellowed over time) while the Oculus is more exposed to the elements than the lobby of a building, considering how many people trek through it.

If they ever do a retrofit, they should choose a bright material that doesn't weather as quickly as marble and still retains a bright color decades later instead of dulling and taking on a stained appearance after just a few years like white marble does after some time (especially in humid climates like those in NYC).

Some recent, rarer videos of the Oculus Plaza recorded by a youtuber
(Catherine Luzel Francisco) that was staying at the Millennium Downtown Hotel.

The views are pretty nice, especially at night, even with 2 WTC still unfinished and no date in sight for above ground construction at that site.

As dutchmazz points out in this video starting at 1:59:45 and from 2:05:00 to 2:13:00, security in charge of managing the National 9/11 memorial is not doing their job in keeping the memorial a respectful place.

There are people treading on the grounds with bicycles, obnoxiously screaming out loud and live streaming in front of the memorial pools and using selfie sticks. Worse yet, the security on hand doesn't seem to even care or do anything, and just walk away from these obvious public disturbances that disrespect the lives of people lost on 9/11.
