I'm actually German-born and my ancestry is the same, but don't hold that against me. I could have called you, in an Americanism, a "cooler Typ", which essentially translates as a "good dude".

Being called a Squarehead was bizzare for me when I moved here, because that was our insult for the Mennonite community.

I remember the Montrealers calling people from KW "square;" meanwhile they'd never been west of Pearson airport.

There's definitely a sullen peasant vibe to many small town Quebecois, but not speaking French, I wouldn't call them square. Ignorant maybe? (They remind me of rural Albertans and East Kootenays BC people: a misplaced sense of superiority that comes across as hillbilly redneck.)

I feel like I understand those without kids the most here, and more rural born in Canada people - as in farmers, not small town people.

Since I'm an ethnic Scot with a head shaped like a cinder block, I've never taken offence at "Squarehead".
