The Transport Politic has a detailed rundown of public transportation (including light rail, metro rail, commuter rail, streetcars and bus rapid transit) currently under construction or starting construction this year, and provides a handy map:

Is there really nothing u/c or planned for Philly and Chicagoland this year?

Not only is nothing planned for Philadelphia but we are actually going to experience a contraction of service as the rail bridge over the Schuykill River on the Norristown High Speed line will close this spring due to lack of funding for replacement.

Needless to say it pisses me off, we live in a state that won't even give us te money to maintain the system we have let alone build new lines or expand service.

Awesome map, thanks for posting! I also like that they include our projects up her in Canada as well.

3) Crenshaw Line LRT - Pre Construction Utility Work
4) Downtown Regional Connector - LRT Subway - Pre Construction Utility Work

not that it has entered even pre-construction, but the local business people voted massively (73%) IN FAVOR of the downtown streetcar, meaning you can add that to the list of upcoming projects. they're still waiting for federal funding to the tune of 50-something million from the rail fund, but it's los angeles and it'll happen. the current timeline sees delivery mid-2015, unlike virtually all of the rest of these projects, which look to be delivered after 2020

i don't know what has happened in los angeles, whether it's the national trend coming home in a big way or whether villaraigosa is a roosevelt-level pathblazer and visionary, but it's very special.

Both...trust me. People are starting to pay attention.
My impression of LA has been completely turned on it's head. It's nothing short of incredible how quickly things are changing.

Toronto has loads of bus rapid transit u/c as well, which doesn't seem to be listed here:

Kind of significant to leave off a map like that. They're even getting their own physically-separated busways, which most other "BRT" systems are not.

Edit: They're also missing the Mississauga BRT project, which will cut travel times in some cases by more than 50%. In one case it will cut travel times from 27 minutes to 10 minutes:

Seems like a few BRT systems may be missing. Denver has a BRT system under construction heading up towards Boulder (though it doesn't have dedicated lanes).

toronto's budget number also seem to be on the low side..

union station reno : $1 billion
georgetown south upgrades: $1.2 billion
union pearson express: $400 million
spadina extension: $2.6 billion
Eglinton Crosstown: $5.9 billion

Total: $11.1 billion (then there is the BRT which is another billion +, as there is more UC in missisuaga as well as york region pictured above)

I think winnipeg has some BRT u/c as well.

Not to burst your happiness bubble, but there is no EIR completed for the streetcar yet and no funding. An EIR, which will probably start early this year will take a minimum 18 months to complete. Usually, 2 years. Barring no legal challenges, then we need federal funding grants to match the 50% committed by downtown taxpayers. Then, we hit construction. So another year to seek federal funding and 2 years for construction/pre-construction......you're looking at 2018 at the earliest that the streetcar opens. Sorry. Wish 2015 was reasonable, but it's not. And that's primarily because no EIR has even started.

Villaraigosa has been the best transportation mayor for LA, probably ever. During 2008, even when there was a near meltdown of the financial crises, he got LA County voters to support a new half cent sales tax by 68%! The Measure R tax alone guarantees 10 rail projects in LA over 30 years.

Also, people tend to forget that Antonio's first duty as Mayor was to convince Henry Waxman to overturn the FEDERAL subway drilling ban in Los Angeles. If you recall, before Antonio took office, it was illegal to get funding for a subway west of Western. Antonio ran on the platform of overturning the ban (which he did with his Methane Gas Commission that convinced Waxman to overturn a drilling ban), find funding (Measure R commits $4.1 billion) and complete studies. The last one, completing studies, something else people forget. In 2008, Metro moved forward with EIR's on 5 projects that all other supervisors at the time thought were "pie in the sky" with Crenshaw Corridor, Regional Connector and Westside Subway. But Antonio wanted to get the studies done early so that before he left office in 2013, the projects were starting construction. Guess what......he achieved all of that. He's been a Transportation God for LA, something he doesn't get enough respect for.

Let's hope our next Mayor is as good as Antonio. I hope its Garcetti who wants to continue the rail expansion. All other candidates keep saying more of the same "move bus stops off streets, no construction in rush hour, yadda yadda yadda". Antonio was a visionary who raised our tax, but now we're getting a transit system double its size when he first became Mayor.

It was due to Antonio Villairaigosa. Find the right mayor who's willing to invest in cities and not use the same old talking points. When Antonio ran for Mayor, he told the poeple we need to get a subway to the Westside. Early magazines in 2005 when he ran for Mayor called him "The Subway Mayor". This guy deserves to be the next Federal Transportation Chief (i.e. Ray LaHood's position).

Isn't there a line under construction or Infill project underway? New Jersey has about 460 million underway various infill stations , a new line and smaller upgrades. He missed 360 million in CT projects for the Knowledge Corridor and New Haven line infill stations.

Didn't that just open last month? Or is there a further extension still being constructed at this time?

as is Kitchener LRT.
Wow, hadn't heard the Kitchener/Waterloo LRT had finally been approved, funding was in place, and construction is ready to begin. Good for them!

The downtown component of Jacksonville's planned BRT lines was missed as well. Construction starts next month.

That's why, then. Only fixed-guideway systems are included. Hartford's BRT id a whole dedicated roadway for buses, built on top of a former rail line. It's similar to Ottawa's system.

If Denver's BRT doesn't even have dedicated lanes on a general-purpose roadway, it doesn't qualify.

Isn't this a thread for List of American rail transit currently under construction? How is BRT popping its head here...it's not rail. Maybe another thread for BRT should be created?

Tampa's MetroRapid is mentioned and that's not fixed guideway. I think they simply missed a few projects.

LAofAnaheim, the BRT talk entered the discussion with the posting of the Transport Politic map, which also identified BRT projects.
