I saw a great article on CNBC about scientific reasons behind the 2020 and 2021 increases in murders in the US. It says there seems to be an overall decrease happening this year. There's a link to a great chart that shows most (if not all) large cities in the country and their rates from last year to this year. There are definitely some jaw-dropping increases in there; but, overall, the rate is down from last year. Some shocking increases I saw were:

Colorado Springs
2021 - 13
2022 - 26
Increase - 100.00%

Milwaukee
2021 - 107
2022 - 145
Increase - 35.51%

New Orleans
2021 - 132
2022 - 168
Increase - 27.27%

Anchorage had 32 homicides in 2019 and I believe has kept on pace since. For a city half the size of Colorado Springs that’s pretty bad.

14 (so far) for Merseyside with a pop of 1.4 mil or something doesnt sound too bad but also not great. How many of these murders are within the city of Liverpool?

Yes the 14 is for the Merseyside region not sure how many are in the city but all crimes seem to be on the rise
I don't want to get too political but the police here are more interested in their pronouns than

Not murders news, but I'm bit shocked:

Baltimore 'drug dealers' threatened to 'shoot up' set of 'Lady in the Lake', starring Natalie Portman

I didn't realize they had such power over some regions of the city.

Portland has 65 homicides as September begins, which is slightly ahead of 2021's record-breaking pace. This includes 4 murders over the weekend, including a high-profile case where a domestic violence suspect was freed from jail by a 'bail fund,' and then immediately proceeded to murder his girlfriend:

Suspect denied bail in Portland domestic murder

There were just 4 homicides in the city of Kalamazoo, and 11 in the county, going into August. But August started out rough, and the last week of August was particularly violent in the Kalamazoo area -

- Aug. 9 - Xuan Thanh Vo, 32, in a planned act of violence, struck and killed Sandy Villarreal, 65, with his car in a Walmart parking lot in Oshtemo Township. The two were complete strangers. He just wanted to kill someone and staked out this parking lot (and others), choosing his victim at random. He is in custody.

- Aug. 13 - daytime armed robbery in Kalamazoo. Police gave chase on foot, suspect shot at police multiple times in a residential area and has not been found yet. Not a murder, though it easily could have been.

- Aug. 24 - Non-fatal shooting in Kalamazoo. One victim in the hospital.

- Aug. 26 - Naya Reynolds, a 22-year-old student at Western Michigan University, was shot and killed at an I-94 park and ride in Portage around 10:50pm. She was one victim in a triple shooting that also injured an 18-month-old and a pregnant woman. A man is under arrest, and a stolen AR-15 was recovered at the site.

- Aug. 27 - Kaylee Gansberg, a 21-year-old student at Western Michigan University, was hit by a drunk driver around 2:30 am and died one day later, on Aug. 28. It was a hit-and-run, and while technically not murder, it might as well be (the charge will probably be something like vehicular manslaughter). There is a suspect in custody.

- Aug. 28 - Non-fatal double shooting in Kalamazoo. Two victims in the hospital.

- Aug. 29 - David Shayne Postawa, 31, shot in the face and killed outside a liquor shop in Kalamazoo around 10:30pm. He was a local musician / rapper. No suspect in custody.

- Aug. 29 - Unidentified driver of a stolen vehicle died after crashing into a utility pole during a police chase. Again, not a murder, but just more reckless violence that led to a loss of life.

- Aug. 30 - 31-year-old Brianna Bates 6-year-old daughter Zenzia Bates were murdered at their apartment in Portage. The suspected murderer, husband / father Henry Bates, then took his own life in an apparent murder-suicide.

So now we're at 16 in the county. Catching up to the 25 in 2021...

Any murders are intolerable, and whilst Liverpool has been in the national news because of the unfortunate shooting of a minor, the actual homicide rate trend in England & Wales has been declining from a high of 1.79 per 100,000 in 2003 to 0.99 per 100,000 in 2021.

That is very low especially by American standards, but it still has a way to go. Part of the solution is to adequately fund the judicial system (as the barrister strikes demonstrate), ensure that police officer numbers expand in line with a growing population (they’ve been going down since the financial crisis), and legislation is changed for petty crime and drugs are decriminalised. ‘pronouns’ are not the issue.

Murders in NYC for August were down 51% from last year. And it isn't like 2021 was a historically bad year or anything, just worse than the immediate previous years.

It looks like the 2020-era U.S. crime spike has basically vanished in most places.

2022 not over yet. Does your 2020 era take in 3 years or a decade?

Pittsburgh as of June 30 has seen a 19.5% rate increase in murders over that time period last year. I couldn't find data after June 30th but thats not good news. We have the 19th highest murder per 100k now for any US cities.

are you basing that claim on the data from one city?

I believe that based on the most recent weekly stats, Chicago is leading the pack in terms of large cities experiencing a reduction in murders. Murders are down 15 percent in Chicago compared to last year YTD. Boston (-13%) and NYC (-12%) are not far behind. Unfortunately some cities are experiencing increases, including Philly (+3%) and DC (+1%).

In case other people didn't know, Jeff Asher seems to have a regularly updated dashboard here: https://www.ahdatalytics.com/dashboa...er-comparison/

Of largish cities, Columbus seems to have the biggest decrease.

What the hell is going on with Colorado Springs? 15 murders last year and 30 this year? Was there a mass shooting Im unaware of?

Also this data set is disturbing. The clearance rate for solving crime across loads of police departments. https://www.ahdatalytics.com/dashboards/ucr/

Apparently if you want to murder someone in NYC you have a 73% chance of getting away with it. And if you want to steal a car you have a 94% chance of getting away with it. Hopefully that chart is not accurate.

yeah, if the data in SIGSEGV's link is accurate, then milwaukee and KC are bucking the general downward homicide trend across the major midwest cities this year:

YOY homicide change (city proper):

milwaukee: +22.5%
kansas city: +11.7%
minneapolis: -4.6%
cleveland: -12.2%
cincinnati: -12.9%
detroit: -13.6%
chicago: -15.1%
st. louis: -17.9%
indianapolis: -19.1%
columbus: -37.6%

caveat: despite the downward trend this year, most of these cities still have shamefully high homicide rates.

although all of these cities should be taking notes from columbus right now to find out what they're doing and why it's working.

I was organizing a post about Puerto Rico population collapse and for some reason I came across with the island's murder rates. It's very high, I've never imagined:

It peaked at 33.2/100,000 (2011) and started declining to reach 18.5/100,000 (2020). Brazil's peak was at 28/100,000, for example.

In San Juan, much worse: 173 homicides (2019), for a 53/100,000 rate.
