Wow, very sleek! I love the setbacks. Makes it appear taller than it actually is.

I agree, I'd do one thing different... I've switch the heights of the skinny/short module with the taller/fat module. Just flip the two and then the terraces/setbacks would be facing south and get maximum sunlight.

^ Is there a time frame for this project? I love this thing

I know that some people hate the "West Loop look" but I like it. Having a district of buildings with a distinct aesthetic contribute to 'placemaking'. This tower is an archetypal "West Loop" building. More of these

That's odd. Hope it's a typo.

Newcastle told Crain's they plan to break ground in 18 months, so we'll have to wait a while for this one.

The Crain's article also said it's 380 ft, which is nice

I agree. And considering many options pre-2010 were precast turd or glass pancake towers, the west loop stuff is far from trite.

I don't mind the "West Loop look" at all. I enjoy the industrial motifs and emphasis on steel and brick.

As many have mentioned, it is a far cry from the beige concrete crap we got in the 2000's.

This is quite good, really - but it could be outstanding.

The East and West elevations of the tower are phenomenal. The North and South elevations would be substantially improved by tossing the balconies.

And the base. On its own, is it bad? No, not at all. But again, with these apparently too prescriptive Fulton design guidelines, we wind up with this incongruent base that detracts from what could be a very sleek, unified overall design down to the sidewalk. It's got to give this forced nod to the fantastic authentic and historic industrial/loft warehouse buildings in the neighborhood. Why? It's goofy. The guidelines need a revision, and I was quite heartened that some of the Plan Commission members publicly mention that this type of stuff is in fact an issue and they need to take another look at them.

Really? I think the gap between the base and the upper part is the best looking part. To each his own I guess.

State gets 2 bids to buy the James R. Thompson Center; here’s what’s next
Quote:
Two potential buyers for the Thompson Center, the state government’s former base in the Loop, have emerged. Both groups submitted proposals to the Illinois Department of Central Management Services, an agency spokesperson said Saturday.

But what’s next for the 17-story building known for its all-glass sloping facade and domed skylight remains a mystery. Details of the two proposals weren’t revealed, thanks to a state law that allows officials to keep the submissions concealed until a winning plan is picked.

State officials have begun to evaluate the proposals “to determine which is in the best interest of the state and its taxpayers,” the spokesperson said.

One of the bids is expected to be picked by the end of the year, with a purchase agreement to follow by February and the sale to close by April.
