A minor thing, but Hollywood, Encino, and Venice are all "Los Angeles."

Thanks for categorizing this data.

San Jose and SF should always be one category when talking about venture capital, tech, etc IMO. The workforce and intelligence is all the same. I encounter the same people in SF as I do in Silicon Valley. It used to not be the case, but now it is.

Is this as of 2022 or achieved in 2022? I ask because there seem to be companies missing if the former, and likely some errors in timing if the latter. For example, I'm pretty sure that Alloy achieved unicorn status last year, and Rokt might have also been a unicorn class of 2021.

The link says these are companies that achieved Unicorn status in 2022.

It’s the latter, and the timeline for this list actually dates back to September 2021.

Interesting data. Did not know NY metro is doing so well. Shows how funding is heavily concentrated on coasts but am surprised that Chicago has only one. Philly is also a surprise.

The list is missing the sale of Lucid to Cint Group for 1.1 billion dollars in October 2021. This was the first unicorn for New Orleans.

Quote:
News broke today that the Cint Group, a Swedish market research firm, has agreed to buy New Orleans-based analytics company Lucid for roughly $1.1 billion.

Cint, which listed on the Stockholm and NASDAQ exchanges in February, said it will pay $580 million in cash and $470 million in shares for Lucid.

Yeah. It's all pretty intertwined around here. I have coworkers from SJ, SF and everywhere in between.

Pretty much. They should really be combined into one metro. At least pre pandemic there were plenty of people that lived in SF and commuted to the East Bay or South Bay, as well as people that lived in the East Bay and commuted to SF or the South Bay, as well as people that lived in South Bay and commuted to SF or the East Bay. Then you’ve also got places like Berkeley, San Mateo, Palo Alto, and the North Bay as significant job and residential nodes as well. With Caltrain and BART combined, you have over 300 trains connecting SF with SJ daily. The physical, economic, and cultural connections are all there as the Bay Area really has one cohesive identity.

Is this list only companies that reached unicorn status in 2022?

Just about 15 years ago Boston was an undisputed #2 place after Silicon Valley, then around 10-5 years ago people were talking about how NYC was catching up to Boston and here we are now.

Plus, San Jose to San Francisco is about the same the distance between one end of Houston city limits.

yeah, definitely unclear after looking at previous years as well. for atlanta, stord is on both the 2022 and the 2021 list, but there are also 4 others on the 2021 list that seemed to have dropped off (fullstory, flock safety, calendly, salesloft)
