I still think Upper Manhattan or Bronx should be where a second stadium goes if the WP stadium is a sure thing.

NYCFC Picks HOK and Turner Construction to Build Queens Stadium

BY CELIA YOUNG
APRIL 14, 2023

Quote:
New York City Football Club (NYCFC) tapped architecture firm HOK and general contractor Turner Construction Company to build its long-awaited soccer stadium in Willets Point, Queens, NYCFC announced Friday.

The duo will design and build the $780 million, 25,000-seat stadium at the center of a mixed-use development that’s also due to include housing, a public school and retail, according to NYCFC.

“We couldn’t be more excited,” Brad Sims, CEO of NYCFC, said. “We’re getting one of the absolute top sports architecture firms in the world and marrying them with one of the absolute top builders of sports stadia in the world. It’s almost a dream team for us.”

NYCFC, HOK and Turner plan to finalize the design of the stadium later this year, when it will be reviewed by the New York City Public Design Commission as part of the city’s lengthy Uniform Land Use Review Procedure.

If the project scores approvals by the end of this year, the stadium will be on track to open in time for the 2027 Major League Soccer season, Sims said.
Quote:
HOK plans to take inspiration from the Willets Point neighborhood in Queens to design the stadium, said Rashed Singaby, principal and senior project designer at HOK.

“The inspiration does not come from a project. The inspiration comes from the location,” Singby said. “This is a stadium that represents New York, a world city, and represents Queens, which is the world’s borough with residents from every nationality and ethnicity across the world and every language spoken across the world. The stadium has to reflect that and be curated specifically to that identity.”

NYCFC’s new stadium will also include year-round events and programming for the Queens community when not hosting games, though Sims said it was too early to share specifics of the design.

The arena has been more than a decade in the making. The club first began searching for a permanent stadium before NYCFC had its first kickoff in 2012, but initial plans for a development in Flushing Meadows Corona Park were derailed by local opposition.

The team has played at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx for the past nine seasons while it searched for a new location, but won its first MLS Cup in 2021 despite the less-than-ideal terrain, The New York Times reported. It was also in talks to build a stadium in the South Bronx but that deal eventually fell through.

^ Holy crap I sure hope not. Not only that, the whole Ye Olde Ballpark trend of the last 20 years really only translates to baseball. A modern 21st century MLS stadium masquerading as a early 20th century neo-trad MLB ballpark would be extraordinarily weird.

The thing about this stadium being built in Willets Point, where they are planning to build mostly housing in the housing starved city, is I don't see a reason why they couldn't put the stadium on the parking lot west of Citi.

A parking deck could be built between the two stadiums to make up for lost parking.

Yes, I know it's technically parkland, but considering the amount of housing they could build on the proposed site, it would have made more sense to put the stadium there.

Given that alternative, I think even the NIMBYs would see the reasonable nature of that. We're talking about what is now essentially large parking lots. And given the push now for what would be a casino on those lots, it just seems like everything is in the wrong place.

It's not as if Flushing Meadows hasn't seen stadium expansion. The tennis center is the biggest thing in the park, and has always been expanding.

New Renderings Released of NYCFC’s Planned Soccer Stadium
Developers showcased the rendering to the community board that will cast an advisory vote as to whether they’ll give the project its blessing.

The developers of New York City’s planned soccer stadium served community leaders a wall pass of new renderings of the project as they hope to score approvals.

Nestled on more than 60 acres between Northern Boulevard and the 7 train will be two sections of housing — 2,500 planned units in total — with the stadium in between, near Citi Field, the renderings showcased at Queens Community Board 7’s monthly meeting showed.

As someone who follows the US National Teams and MLS, I don't believe US Soccer will ever designate a specific stadium as the national stadium.

For better or worse, the federation selects home games based on ticket revenue, proximity to the next game that week, and how many folks in the stadium will be USA fans as opposed to the away team fans. That's one of the reasons why so many games the past few years have been in Ohio. They have new soccer specific stadiums of ~25k that routinely sell out, are centrally located, and the crowds have been largely US supporting. Tournament finals will always be in NFL stadiums since they can sell more tickets.

That being said, the USMNT and USWNT will definitely play here at some point which will be awesome!

Mets’ Owner’s Casino Bid Complicating MLS Stadium Project

Mets' owner Steve Cohen is using a request around Citi Field's parking lot as leverage in negotiations for his casino bid.
NYCFC is hoping to use Citi Field's parking lot for its new stadium.

BY OWEN POINDEXTER

Mets owner Steve Cohen won’t allow an MLS neighbor to park for free on his lot.

NYCFC is deep in negotiations for a new, 25,000-seat stadium and housing development neighboring the Mets’ Citi Field, but the MLS team’s ambitions are tangled up in Cohen’s plans for the same area, according to The City.

The club — which isn’t required to offer parking — wants to use Citi Field’s parking lot for its home games, which would require the Mets’ approval. But Cohen is looking to build a casino near Citi Field on 50 acres designated as park land — and is holding out approval on a parking agreement as leverage.

The NYCFC project is set to transform the area around Citi Field. Plans call for 2,500 units of affordable housing next to the Mets’ stadium and a 650-seat school.

The soccer stadium would be built in the project’s second phase, which will also include a 350-room hotel and could begin by the end of 2024. Construction would be completed in time for the 2026 World Cup and 2027 MLS season.

Meanwhile, Cohen is up against groups including Las Vegas Sands, Resorts World, Related Cos., and Wynn Resorts for a New York City casino license. He’s partnering with Seminole Hard Rock on the bid.

Not NYCFC related but some pretty cool news broke today regarding a new League One soccer team for Brooklyn. Would be neat if they were named the Brooklyn Wanderers.

Mets Owner Tries To Block NYCFC’s Bid To Build A Soccer Stadium Near His Baseball Stadium

By Evan Weiner
June 13, 2023

Quote:
Like a good neighbor, Steve Cohen is there or maybe not. Major League Baseball New York Mets owner Cohen does not appear too thrilled with Major League Soccer NYCFC franchise owners planning to put a stadium in the neighborhood and using the parking lot that surrounds Cohen’s Mets stadium. Cohen, apparently, doesn’t see the value of having NYCFC customers using his parking lot although it is located on New York City parkland for the 20 or 25 times that the stadium will be used over a seven- or eight-month period. Cohen has the parking rights and keeps all of the parking revenue.

But there is far more to this story. Cohen is a very rich hedge fund operator and businessman and given his prowess he thinks he can hold sway over New York City politicians and get their help in landing a casino somewhere near the Mets stadium which sits on New York City parkland.

Cohen can delay the building of the NYCFC stadium by saying no to allowing the soccer team’s fans to use his parking lots. The NYCFC stadium is part of a stadium-village plan on land that has been used for decades by junkyard operators. There will be 2,500 units of affordable housing along with retail space. There is a scheduled groundbreaking ceremony on the first phase, which includes 1,100 income-restricted apartments and a 650-seat school in the fall.

The second phase of the project which would include the 25,000-seat soccer stadium, along with a 350-room hotel and the additional 1,400 affordable apartments would start in 2024. But the stadium construction cannot start until a deal between Cohen and NYCFC is reached. Cohen has been opposed to the soccer stadium plan. He wants a casino instead and is making that clear to politicians and he wants their support for his casino or else.

I agree with this. It’s time to stop trying to dry up every ounce of vitality in the city. Reopen the market, and leave the market at the Brooklyn Bridge alone.

NYC’s first soccer stadium hits a snag — the Queens borough president

By Arya Sundaram
Oct 11, 2023

Quote:
The Queens borough president said he will withhold a key approval for a planned $780 million soccer stadium in Willets Point unless the Adams administration reinstates a popular street vendor market in Corona Plaza.

Democrat Donovan Richards disclosed the ultimatum in remarks before the nonprofit Street Vendor Project’s gala at MoMA PS1 last week and repeated it to Gothamist. The project must undergo a lengthy land-use review, including of street maps.

“What I said to the administration is: I will not sign off on any fútbol stadium until my vendors are returned to Corona Plaza,” Richards told the gathering, to thunderous applause. “And you can tweet that.”

He added, “Those [street] maps will collect dust for the rest of the year because we will not turn our backs on the working people of our borough.”
Quote:
City Hall spokesperson Charles Lutvak said in a statement that he expects the land-use review to begin as planned “in the coming weeks” without any delays.

The ultimatum adds a new wrinkle to a long-running dispute over Corona Plaza, where the city earlier this year shutdown a popular street vendor market amid complaints about cleanliness, crime and crowding, including from owners of brick-and-mortar stores. Many of the street vendors are migrants doing business without licenses.

The 25,000-seat stadium is the future home of the New York City Football Club, set to debut in 2027.

City officials have said they are still ironing out long-term plans for a market at Corona Plaza, after sanitation police cleared out dozens of vendors in July over ongoing complaints of blocked sidewalks, unsanitary conditions and “illegal vending” too close to storefronts.
Quote:
Lutvak said the administration has been working to "improve quality of life" at the plaza and establish an "outdoor market concession on the plaza to better serve the space’s diverse uses and improve the experience for everyone living in, working in, or visiting the area.”

The Department of Transportation, which created Corona Plaza, was expected to release a request for proposals for an outside company or nonprofit to manage the long-term market in the plaza. Agency spokesperson Vincent Barone told Gothamist last month that officials also were exploring shorter-term solutions for vendors to return.

Richards said he’s still negotiating with the Adams administration about the number of vendors that will be allowed back at the plaza, which was once home to over 80 stalls. Richards said his “magic number” is 28 vendors, but said he’s still fending off proposals to permanently exclude vendors from the plaza.

“I'm going to use every tool in my toolbox to ensure that they're not left out of the conversation,” Richards said.

He added, “Hell, no. I'm not gonna put this stadium in drive while the vendors are in neutral.”

I used to be one of the few that thought that placing a soccer stadium in the Bronx was the best move for NYFC, but I can understand why NYFC chose Queens, and much of that has a lot to do with the large South American contingent that lives in Queens (Colombians, Ecuadorians, Peruvians, Venezuelans, etc.).

The square stadium is cutting and it's a perfect site to place a soccer stadium, especially considering that MLS stadiums don't have as much capacity as baseball and football stadiums plus it's very doable to build such a stadium in Willets Point.

Finally, since NY has a soccer team of it's own, it's time to give NJ a team by discarding the NY Red Bull name and changing it to the NJ Red Bull. Fair enough???
