I could see today what looks like a crane and a drill for piles on the site.

You are probably right but sometimes they do test bores long before construction starts. That happened at 45 Lansing (or whatever they call it now).

PS: Hope they leave the existing street trees alone. The life of a tree in San Francisco is REALLY hard.

Oh yes, that could be the case as well. I also neglected to mention that you can sort of see the affordable housing at 255 Fremont going up. The steel for that has really gone up quickly!

What's that in the bottom left corner? Looks like they're beginning work on a tower crane.

I doubt it. They haven't even drilled piles yet.

I went by there the other day and thought the same thing at first but I concluded it was part of the mobile crane you also see in your posted photo.

Activity today:

By me

However this material stacked on the site is the sort of thing they use for the retaining walls lining an excavation so that seems good news: That excavation may start soon:

Exclusive: Tishman Speyer and Chinese partners break ground on condo tower near S.F. waterfront
Jul 11, 2017, 2:36pm PDT Updated Jul 11, 2017, 2:53pm PDT
Roland Li
Reporter, San Francisco Business Times

A twisting, steel condo tower designed by renowned Chicago architect Jeanne Gang is rising near San Francisco's waterfront.

Developer Tishman Speyer and Chinese partners Vanke and Shanghai Longlife have started construction on 160 Folsom St., a 400-foot-tall project with 391 condos in the Transbay District. A surface drill, crane and excavator are now on the site.

Shanghai Longlife recently bought a 50 percent stake in the project for an undisclosed price, joining a wave of Chinese investors funding San Francisco construction despite some softening in home prices in the past year . . . .

This one I'm really looking forward to. The design is amazing and should be built much taller (800 - 1000' IMHO), but perhaps not in this location.

The only thing wrong with doing it in this location is silly NIMBYism. It is not directly on the waterfront and doesn't block anybody's access to the shoreline.

Not true--it was already granted an additional 100' above the 300' height limit. This is not the location for anything taller without looking out of place.
