Somerville is a borough in central New Jersey, and is the seat of Somerset County. The population is around 12,000.
The Somerville area was primarily settled by the Dutch in colonial times. The area was rural farmland until a railroad came through the area in the 1840s, and milling along the Raritan River in the 1850s. Somerville was formed from Bridgewater Township in 1863, after these developments brought economic growth.
Today, Somerville is an economic center for central New Jersey, and sits next to several major expressways and highways in New Jersey. Somerville also is a commuter town for people that work in New York City.
