He said that back when Montreal was becoming a major port Briton was the largest trading nation, when they would come to North America they would use stones from Scotland as ballast in their empty ships for balance crossing the ocean. They would offload them here before returning with timber and pelts. That's why the older cities along the North Eastern coast of North America have more buildings that look like those in their heritage stock. The Scottish stone was used for construction.
My understanding was always that the ballast stones were the granite setts that were used as pavers.

I'm loving that so many real estate ads are using drone shots these days.

This one (Rabbittown on the left side of that main street, and Pennywell on the right) would show my place if not for the curvature of the hill. Mine is over the first horizon (before the harbour/Southside Hills) kind of straight up from the bright teal house to the left of the yellow one.

I know downtown is small, but these shots where you can't even see it always weird me out a little. It looks like there's maybe one street not visible before the harbour, but really it's the entire commercial core and a good chunk of the rowhouses lol I guess the "tall" buildings give it away somewhat.

For example... top right of the photo, by the R in realtor - you can see a bright pink gallery building:

Looks like it's surely just steps from there to the harbour. It's actually in the red circle:

And this one below is Cochrane, an area out of view to the upper left of the photo above:

My understanding was about that influence too. The wave of immigrant Scottish people built many things here.

Bottom centre, the string of patio lights at the bottom of that (mostly) blue building. I ate there this summer!

EDIT: literally had no idea we were that close to the armoury/citadel lol It felt like all that would be very far away. Fascinating not knowing a city lol

It's great to see a lot of holes in the north end being filled although there's still work to be done of course.

You can see in that photo how some of the 60's and 70's slab buildings aren't much denser despite being taller as they have a lower FAR with surface lots attached. It would be nice to see some of these redone. I wonder if the planning rules make this difficult since some of these side streets have such low height limits. The economics may not work out to put underground parking for an old folks' home under a new 3 or 4 storey apartment building with some shops.

The parking lot in the foreground is the HTNS affordable housing development site. Regrettable that it got held up for so long. At this point, most surface lots in Halifax have some kind of "story" associated with them and/or are government owned. Halifax has a lot of DND land that's kept in a bad state.

The following are several images I took yesterday from my phone whilst walking from the Beaches area of Toronto to Downtown, specifically the CN tower, a 8 km walk.
I was going for more moody images, lower lighting levels, later on a changed white balance...things like that.

I wish they would find a sleeker (/more permanent) way of lighting up the signal mast at the top of the Citadel. I get the idea here (the ropes themselves are "lit up") but the execution just looks tacky and kind of half-assed IMO. It has the potential to look really cool but they squander it ("they" in this case being Parks Canada, I think)

Oh that's interesting. I personally don't mind it even though it isn't a particularly refined concept. It kind of reminds me of fireworks shooting up into the air giving a sense of festivity lol.

Some photos from our drive around residential streets of Burnaby and Coquitlam last December.

Deer Lake Christmas lights with Lougheed skyline in the background.

Lights at Burnaby Mountain Park look like levitating.

Colorful lights in Burquitlam area.

Coquitlam residents take the holiday season seriously.

Burnabites don't fare any worse.

Brentwood skyline from Halifax Street.

Quick pitstop at Burnaby Village Museum just before closing time.

Parks Canada may be good at managing something like Banff, but they really shit the bed when it comes to anything in an urban setting. Here in Montreal they treat the Lachine Canal like it's some family attraction in the suburbs of Ottawa when it's actually a heavily used city park and major active transport corridor. It's kind of embarrassing.
