NH is also doing 2X daily service to NRT now, and UA is (or already has) upguaged its NRT service to 747 from 777. Seems that Midwest-Asia service is seeing quite a bit of growth.

That second NH 777-300 flight comes in at a bad time in the middle of rush hour. I have noticed the other new service on Air Berlin, Austrian and Qatar have very good load factors out of ORD this summer.

But how are the load factors on that second NH flight? If they're initially sub-par, are they seeing growth?

If you're not filling planes to Europe in the summertime, you're doing it wrong. What really matters are the types of traffic and fares that people are paying. AB needs to be persuing high-yielding business traffic instead of chasing bottom-barrel tourist traffic that is extremely price-sensitive.

Add another 747 8F cargo operator at ORD, Air Bridge Cargo. I see no reason LH would have problems at ORD with the 747 8 other than with the jetbridges being used. When they brought the A380 in on a demo flight it went straight in off 4L into T5 with no problem. The cargo 747 8F is also longer than an A380.

You can add the new Etihad 747 8 freighter to the list of 747 8 operations at ORD. It started coming in last month.

They do have taxiway restrictions but are still coming in daily. I think the international passenger operators prefer frequency at ORD with several flights a day rather than one A380 or 747 8.

United just announced it is launching new seasonal service to Edinburgh, Scotland next year.

With all the recent growth of UA at ORD, has the airport once again become the airline's biggest hub - outpacing the recently diminished IAH hub?

O'Hare gets $10 million for taxiway to help new runway

Federal officials hope grant also serves as shot in the arm for restarting runway expansion talks

By Jon Hilkevitch, Chicago Tribune reporter
9:26 p.m. CDT, September 20, 2013

O'Hare International Airport is receiving a $10 million federal grant for airfield construction that will allow for more flights, with Illinois congressmen hopeful the money also will jump-start stalled negotiations between Chicago and the airlines over completing the runway expansion project.

The Federal Aviation Administration funding announced Friday will cover much of the cost to build a key taxiway that's critically important to the efficient and safe operation of a new runway that officials say is scheduled to open Oct. 17.

Cathay Pacific will be increasing service to Hong Kong from daily to 10x weekly starting next summer. This is suspected to become a second daily flight soon after. United also has a daily flight to Hong Kong, and will be bringing their 747-400s back to Chicago next summer on routes to Frankfurt, Shanghai, and Tokyo.

Chicago's Asia connections are starting to stack up. Expected for next summer:

ORD-NRT 40 weekly flights (Tokyo)
ORD-ICN 14 weekly flights (Seoul)
ORD-PEK 21 weekly flights (Beijing)
ORD-PVG 14 weekly flights (Shanghai)
ORD-HKG 17 weekly flights (Hong Kong)

EVA Air has also expressed interest in serving Chicago from Taipei.

Closer to home, ORD has outperformed ATL in the past few months with respect to # of aircraft movements. (takeoffs and landings) ATL is still miles ahead when it comes to passengers though. (less regional jets at ATL)

Nice Asian flight update....Also ATL has alot less cargo flights than ORD, and they add to movements but not to passenger counts obviously.

Cathay Pacific will be adding that second, thrice weekly flight departing at like 0115 am - it'll operate as a Westbound redeye, arriving at 0515am into HKG.

Should help net some late domestic connections!

Yes, it will help to connectivity the flight at ORD. It's very easy, but not a hard way.

Does anyone know of any ORD-transpacific passenger carriers with Anchorage stopovers? I remember a major Asian carrier doing it in the mid '90s but I imagine since the 777 era got fully underway, this has probably gone away.

I love driving northern LSD and looking up and seeing 3 parallel armadas of passenger jets coming in off Lake Michigan, ever since the far north runway opened five years ago. Now just imagine 4 of them.

This is an informed guess, but I'm under the impression that DFW has a ridonkulous amount of separation between their runways. Given the demand, they could land like 300 plans an hour there or something.

That new south runway 10C/28C has a strange approach pattern due to it being to close to the next runway 10L/28R. The city can brag but that new runway will have some restrictions due to that fact.
